I am currently a foreign student in Germany and I remember debating with my German teacher and classmates on Studying in Germany. A classmate listed the good things like studies being free and all, I on the other hand said the bad thing is that people leave the country after studying for free. The person listing the good things was the one who would leave the country later and move to the UK for a better income. I on the other hand love the Germans for paying for my studies with their hard work. I do not want to disappoint these people and want to give them back. Hence, I decide to stay in Germany for the rest of my life. I want to work for the people and the country, no matter how hard the Taxation system is. Germany has opened its arms for me and I have to make it equal by paying the country's economy back. I hope to see more people treating Germany the right way and not just using it for their own benefit.

Just fix the damn foreign office issue where working visas take at least 2-3 months to be processed. You can ask any non-EU student about this matter, we have to beg them for every call/urgent appointment, and they just tell us to wait, and yeah the typical reason is "overloaded". Germany needs laborers, but the working visa process is never a priority. I don't mean to talk shit, but Germany has produced so many talented individuals. Still, it's very irresponsible to those eligible to work, not to mention the tax thingy yet.

Es decir, si te endeudas pero después de la uni no consigues un buen trabajo que te pague la deuda, no te debes de preocupar. Sad but true for American Universities. Student debt here is insane & many Americans carry that debt for an entire lifetime. Additionally, there are basically no scholarships for doing a masters in the US , which can help you get a higher paying job after graduating (depending on what you studied) But nowadays, your degree doesn’t guarantee any return, which sucks if you’re drowning in student debt. There are people I know who are 40+ who are still knee deep in student loans 🙃
@luciamacakova75166 ай бұрын
well said. Why should you study at Uni, and pay so much, if there is no guarantee even a job nor money? This can lead to a situation when people will not be able to study after they have to pay the debts of their parents or grandparents...or great-grandparents. The level of erudition will fall drastically and the state will be force to launch free education. Then the state will make education a private business. Then the debt will be unbearable. Circle. 😳

In the sciences, if you do a master's you *should* get the option to have it paid while getting a small salary while being a teaching assistant. Offers that don't give you this option are often considered non-viable, unless someone's employer is footing the bill. The amount paid is low but... at least tuition is covered and you won't starve.

I do not think it is negativ at all if someone leaves the country after graduation. It leads to cultural, political and economic exchange and is part of the soft power a nation has. A lot of the influence of the united states is based on it by spreading their ideas.
@BlackFeather9239 күн бұрын
It's negative because the Germans give you so much for your education through the taxes that paid for your education and living expenses, both while you were in school, taxes that were paid for through their hard work. Yet you then, in turn, don't want to give back by paying into the same economy that benefitted you, thus financially taking from Germans who gave you so much, while doing nothing to tangibly help them, in return. The spreading of ideas does nothing to really help Germans when what they need is financial pay into their economy, and for their students to be able to go to school, feed themselves, and keep a roof over their head. Essentially, it's taking, while truly giving nothing tangible in return for all that they gave you.

Is not german education system about accepting only a small number of kids into universities? These kids must first finish Gymnasiums which accept only creme de la creme of students, don't they? So german kids are from kindergarten classified into classes - mediocre, average, and gifted. A kid classified as mediocre, or average must work hard to get a chance to study at university. @Dina523285 ай бұрын
At least public schools here in the US are free from kindergarten through high school. However, in Thailand, schools are not free and parents pay a fortune in tuitions and multiple fees, sending their children to private schools. My son was paying about $300 per semester for his daughter in kindergarten (3 years of kindergarten required in Thailand). The higher the grade the higher the tuition. If you want your child to have an even better education, then you enroll them in so called “international schools” where they offer a “western type” education. However, be ready to pay about $1,000 USD to $2,000 per month for tuition and fees. That is even more money than the average cost of a public U.S. university per year! It’s outrageous the cost of educating the children in Thailand. My granddaughter received a subpar education the four years of attendance in spite of being in a private school. She learned absolutely nothing other than copying Thai alphabet characters on her workbooks. Really disappointing. Going to a government school would have been even worse and not an option. Although living in a paradise setting was nice, the family is relocating to Germany for the child’s sake. It helps that they’re both German citizens. Sorry for the long comment. Greetings from west Texas 🌞🌵🌻😎

Correction about it being free: It's not free, it's tax deductible. Which means you pay a fee each semester but get it back from taxes. Don't ask me why they added that extra step... Though if you qualify for bafög, that fee comes from the interest free loan!
@xornxenophon36526 ай бұрын
Not really; the fee is for the local transportation with busses/trains/whatever. The fee is only EUR 300 to EUR 400 for half a year. That is hardly comparable to what american universities charge as fees. It can be deducted for tax-purposes, but you will get back only a part, depending on your tax-rate.

1:40... The funny thing is, American universities do not want you to work faster. Since universities operate like for-profit businesses, they try to drag out the experience for as long as possible with "General Education" classes. In some ways it's nice to get exposure to other subjects for a well-rounded educational experience, but there are so many units that are required. When I thought I was done... nope, turns out I needed to take 3 more "fusion" classes that were related with my degree but were considered GEs. It's also why I think the universities are ok with full-time students also working full time. The more you languish in your degree program the more money goes in their pockets. Everything is expensive, even the parking passes. The textbook prices are killer. In many classes nowadays you can't even use second-hand books as you need a one-time-use code to access online homework created by the textbook publisher. Don't want to buy it? Too bad, homework is ~20% of your grade! Sometimes, the textbook is even authored by the professor! So they are in a unique position to both help or (more frequently) take advantage of their students... some will distribute their book for free, others will make sure students need to buy a new edition every year. At least I didn't have to do any of the verbal exams in front of professors; I think I would've failed those badly out of anxiety. American professors rely too much on multiple choice Scantron exams though. They're especially bad when identifying the correct answer comes down to recognizing shitty wordplay or deciphering twisted grammar; I feel bad for the students with a native language other than English.

I am surprise that not all US Americans study in Germany. 🤣 But I guess the US universities spend enough money on advertising to make all Americans believe that they are the best unis in the world. I don’t think that’s true. German unis have a really high standard. The only downside in Germany is that one professor has a lot of students, so they often don’t know the individual students.

I'm Australian. It's obvious to me that there are benefits to Germany when German graduates go and work overseas. Those expatriates' close personal and family connections with Germany make them ideal persons to build more trade with Germany, which is great for the German economy. When German researchers go overseas, they also make research links back to Germany, which build Germany's technology future. Also, expatriate Germans can be a force for peaceful relations between Germany and other countries, by showcasing Germans in a positive light in their country of residence. And lastly, if they do come back to Germany to live, they bring an international perspective with them, which can only enrich Germany's development. Of course, if Germany were a 3rd world country (or suffering a weak economy like some other European countries) the effect might be different. An exodus of educated Germans might become a serious "brain drain" which could leave the German economy and government under-resourced, and reliant on foreigners to fill the elite jobs. The thing is, that if an economy is weak and job income is low, too many graduates are going to leave the country anyway -- regardless of whether they paid for their education or not. But if they did not have to pay back an education debt in the first place, they wouldn't be quite so driven to work outside their home country.

No, you wont get it from the university, but from the state you live in. But there is a catch: If you are not fast enough with your studies, they can cancel it. Mostly they use the Regelstudienzeit as a meassurement, witch is the "regular time" you need for the degree. Regular just means, it is what the state thinks is enough. For some studies that does not work out. Also, if your parents have an income, they will tell you, to get that money from your parents, depending on the income. Still better than the US.

In the US a lot of people do get scholarships or go to state universities or community colleges. There are some affordable ways of going to school, depending also on the state and place where one lives in the US, but unfortunately a lot of young people were led to believe it would be ok to take large loans in recent decades.

Germany is good, but I find it somewhat strange that average student debt is the same in Norway and USA. This must mean that the actual costs of studying must be more than tution free vs tution fee.
@marcromain648 ай бұрын
The average student debt in the US is about $38,000 (as of 2023), in Germany it's $2,400. I don't know what it's like in Norway, but it's nowhere near the same magnitude. I suspect you are mixing loans and debts. As this video explains - with satirical exaggeration, of course - the loans in Germany are interest-free and do not have to be repaid in full - and in certain circumstances not at all. As a result, graduates in Germany start with very little to no debt, even though they have taken out loans.
@baldviking19708 ай бұрын
@@marcromain64 So the numbers I got for USA were wrong. They said 28,000 usd. For Norway they are 27,000 usd, and you start paying interest after you finish you studies.
@baldviking19708 ай бұрын
@@marcromain64 I don't get how German students survive 🤔 Here in Norway the cheapest, most subsidized student dorms are 500 usd a month, with shared kitchen and bathroom 🤔
@marcromain648 ай бұрын
@@baldviking1970 I wasn't aware about the situation in Norway. I guess these are less costs for studying per se but costs of living for students who have to move to and live in a university city? In the US, about $28,000/$29,000 would be correct for students aiming for a bachelor's degree, if I remember correctly.
@marcromain648 ай бұрын
@@baldviking1970 Students in Germany get roughly the same loan amount, so they don't have less money at their disposal. But they have to pay back less of it, and this results in lower debts. I suspect that in a direct comparison of Norway and Germany the topography and demography also plays a role. Germany is much more densely populated and many, although not all, students can study close to their parents' home and continue to live there during their studies, which of course reduces expenses on average. Things look a little different in Norway, where as far as I know the distances are quite a bit longer.
