It shd hv been mentioned as part of the current regional Indian state of Kerala. I personally think Old Malayalam was a dialect of Medieval Tamil but as dialects change from place to place, Kerala regions would have been highly influenced by region due to which Malayalam would have separated out during the 9-10th century. This is basically how languages like Gujarati, Marathi, Marwari, Bhojpuri broke out from Sanskrit/Prakrit. And by the time Malayalam got separated, the Chera Kingdom would have vanished. So technically it would be right to say Chera Kingdom as a Tamil Kingdom. My conclusion. Suggestions are welcomed.

Etymological the words Malayalam it's also known to be from Tamil words *Malai* (mountain)+ *Alam* (valley or region) denoting its topography "mountainous region" Malayalee from the words *Malai* (Mountain) + Alee (people or tribe) suggesting it to be "Mountain People or Tribe" The spelling of Kerala got morphed from Chera (kera) alam (region). U shd kno Tamil has single word with multiple meaning and vice versa. Of all Indian languages only two has been identified as classical language which is classified if 11 criterion (conditions) are met. Sanskrit (4-5) and Tamil (the only language in the world satisfying all criterions) with Hebrew, Chinese Japanese etc meeting only 7-8 criterions. Btw no other Indian languages has met the minimum 4 criterion to qualify as such; and one of the criterion shd that be multiple dialects off shooting a main language and depository literature material manifesting its period in use with associated physical scripts (archaic to medieval to present day transformation in use). Further, of the 5 most intelligent languages classified only Tamil of Indian origin has been named so based on mathematical continuation words used (Hebrew, Japanese, Tamil, Latin and Chinese - I think) based on math continuity. Tamil script linkage goes to the Harappan & Mohenjedaro scripts as well as their architectural layouts. These are my limited findings thus far Cheers 🥂
