इस ट्रेजेडी नाटक में मानव जीवन की उत्पति से लेकर जो क्रमानुसार विकास हुआ उसको दर्शाया गया है। ईडीपस की अपनी माता के साथ शादी ये दर्शाता है की आदिमानव काल में पति, पत्नी, माता, बहन जैसे कोई संबध नही हुआ करते थे। इस नाटक में यह बात दिखाई गई है। दूसरी बात पहले के समय में मातृ सत्ताक कुटुंब व्यवस्था हुआ करती थी।बाद में पितृ सताक कुटुंब व्यवस्था प्रचलित हुई। ईडीपस का मामा क्रेयोन जिसको ईडिपस ने थेब्स से निकाल दिया था वो इस बात को दर्शाता है की काल क्रम अनुसार मातृ सता के स्थान पर पितृसता व्यवस्था प्रचलित हुई। तीसरी बात मानव संस्कृति का विकास हुआ जिसमे व्यक्ति कोई भी गुनाह या कोई बुरा काम करता है तो उसके लिए सजा होती है। आदिमानव के समय में यह सब नही था। जब इडीपस को पता चलता है की उसने ही अपने पिता की हत्या कर दी है और माता के साथ शादी की है। तब उसे बहोत दुःख और पछतावा होता है और वो अपनी आंखे फोड़ कर खुद को सजा देता है। इस नाटक में समग्र मानव संस्कृति जो क्रमानुसार विकास हुआ उसको दर्शाया गया है।
