No one can do a work alone. Gandhi did not run the Independent movement alone. Prime Minister Nehru did not run the country alone, Shivaji Maharaj did not build Swarajya alone, PM Narendra Modi do not run the country alone. Everyone needs some help from others. Thus Ambedkar did not write the constitution alone. But about 300 members of the Constituent Assembly of India had the same opportunity to become the chief architect of the Constitution, but only Dr Ambedkar got this honor. Although there are about 300 members in the Constituent Assembly . Ambedkar did not “write the whole constitution for India”. So the indian Constitution was not the work of a single person : it was a collective job. His biggest work is ‘preparation of the Draft of Constitution as chairman of the Draft committee. [ Remember - chairman of the main constitution committee was Dr. Rajendra Prasad and not B R Ambedkar, as is commonly hammered and so believed ]. Drafting a constitution of a country is a difficult task by itself. That too when we talk of India, where there are multiple religions, illiterate people, multiple languages, different cultures, different traditions etc framing a balanced constitution which will cover all such attributes is extremely difficult job, which did successfully. Amb edkar played in drafting the Indian constitution along with K M Munshi (Ex- Home Minister, Bombay), Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer (),N Gopalaswami Ayengar Nehru Cabinet),B L Mitter (Ex-Advocate General, India), Md. Saadullah (Ex- Chief Minister of Assam, Muslim League member),D P Khaitan (lawyer). Sir Benegal Narsing Rau was appinted as the constitutional advisor. Sir Benegal Narsing Rau, a civil servant who became the first Indian judge in the International Court of Justice and was president of the United Nations Security Council, was appointed as the assembly’s constitutional adviser in 1946. Sir B. N. Rau was responsible for the general structure of its democratic framework of the Constitution and prepared its initial draft in February 1948. This draft was debated, revised and finally adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949. As part of research in drafting the Constitution of India in 1946, Sir Rau traveled to the USA, Canada, Ireland and UK. He met judges, scholars and authorities on constitutional law. Rau’s draft was already in place, when the Drafting Committee under chairmanship of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was set up .Rau later became First Indian Judge in International Court of Justice in 1950. B. N. Rau not only drafted Indian constitution, but also assisted in drafting the Constitution of Myanmar or Burma! Responsible for the constitution’s general structure, Rau prepared its initial draft in February 1948. The draft of B.N. Rau consisted of 243 articles and 13 schedules which came to 395 articles and 8 schedules after discussions, debates and amendments. At the 14 August 1947 meeting of the assembly, committees were proposed.Rau’s draft was considered, debated and amended by the 8-person drafting committee, which was appointed on 29 August 1947 with B. R. Ambedkar as chair. It shows the sad stage of affairs of Indian Politics. It is only because of Politics that Ambedkar’s name is taken in Constitution making. It is all Communist propaganda after 1980 when Dr BR Ambedkar was projected as Architect of Indian Constitution. Dr BR Ambedkar was a great man, with all due respect to him The Original Constitution writer was Sir B N Rau.
