Regarding the cav thing, there are certain contexts in which cavalry were dismounted and fought as infantry. Of course, my primary reference is WW1. There were five battalions of the Canadian Mounted Rifles who's horses were taken away in 1915. They served as brigade of the second division and stormed Vimy ridge with the rest of the Corps. That being said, most impressions don't have such context.
@billyreb80427 жыл бұрын
85 Btn NSh Yes, but in civil war reenacting there is a huge problem with people acting as dismounted cavalry, but continuing to use cavalry tactics. Not sure about other eras, but definitely a big problem there. Improper use of dismounted cav. is what he is referring to.

I've said the event is too far plenty of times, when I grew up in Florida and the nearest events used to be several states away (before there were any events in that state). I've also heard the shoe profile excuse several times in WW2, back when nobody was making reproduction footwear. I saw plenty of sneakers and hiking boots 'modified' to look sort of WW2-ish. But I've seen my share of sneakers worn by people who swore they couldn't wear correct shoes/boots. All that said, it was ironic you mentioned research after taking off you pith helmet and showing off your trendy haircut you likely never would have seen during the Zulu wars!

Most of these things I agree with you on.... but lay off the dismounted cavalry man. I'm in a unit that historically did have two companies specifically of men who were dismounts. (5th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry by the time they were part of the Michigan Brigade companies I and K were companies comprised of men who had lost their horses, who had enlisted at a point where horses were not readily available, or who were dismounted by order of their officer for disciplinary reasons. and during a battle its more accurate for us to be dismounted any ways as it was not a regular thing for cavalry troopers to fight on horse back. (Custer made a bit of a thing of it for charging into big saber charge... with 1 of his regiments but the other three were dismounted on the flanks engaged in attacking the confederate flanks with one well to the rear as reserves (specifically I am referencing the use of the 1st 5th 6th and 7th Michigan cavalry units at the Eastern battle field at Gettysburg. So please lay off the poking at dismounts. we're not as inaccurate as you make us out to be.
@MadrasArsenal8 жыл бұрын
Ok, well congrats on being historically accurate while at the same time not being able to take a joke. In this hobby we typically represent soldiers, soldiers poke fun at each other and are not so sensitive about it, as they generally have big shoulders and can brush it off. If its any consolation, I had ancestors in a Mississippi regiment that had several cavalry companies that never saw a horse...
@johnknecht69588 жыл бұрын
I am not unable to take a joke. I am how ever a little bit tired of the "dismounted troopers as an impression is farb" troppe. I have been in this hobby since the early 80s (and as a soldier since the early 90s) I am not unfamiliar with the ribbing that goes on particularly between the branches. (calling berdans "tree frogs" saying the zouave guys were so eager to fight they came running in their pajamas, saying the artillery is where reenactors go to die...or retire. calling mounted cav "Saber fairies" I have heard it all. but the picking on dismount troopers just rubs me wrong. we're already marginalized with in our own groups alot of the time.
@MadrasArsenal8 жыл бұрын
