As an African, exact same thing happened with my father. Growing up, he was the leader of the house before he was a dad. His love language was providing and strictly shaping us into better people. But luckily, my father is super intelligent and humble. He is constantly learning and changing, never comfortably living in the assumption that he is the best version of himself. That's the biggest lesson I have gotten from him. In my late teens is when I discovered actual conversations with him. We can laugh, banter, have hour long debates on equal footing, I can even make fun of him now which is something I would never have dreamed of. He even apologises to us which as you guys African/Asians know, our parents usually think they can never be wrong, so it's crazy to experience the better side of things.

Being from an asian background, where people are just not taught how to express their love in the right ways, I totally get it. Abuse is never something that should be downplayed at all. That shit stays with people for life and is just not right at all. He did good to talk about it, making people feel not alone when they went or are going through stuff like that as well. Screw private talk. All abusers deny their abuse and do not apologise for their abusive behaviours. I do not care if people play it right because it are those people that do the same thing further down the line.
