Have you thought of cutting holes in the flat lower frame plate. Then have a new large plate cut and broken (bent) so you can put it on the bottom as a skid plate. Then when oil change or trans repair etc etc. You can drop the skid plate give access. By breaking the sides of the skid plate. The bolts can come in from the sides Lessing potential damage and making it easier to remove.

I would recommend replacing the intake manifold gaskets before final install. On these 8100s and the other actual LS engines the o-ringed gaskets shrink and create a vacuum leak to big for IAC to keep up with. Not a matter of if but when. You'll get surging at idle, stalling etc when this does happen, typically around 150k miles. Felpro has an upgraded set with steel body instead of the OEM plastic design. Every time I've used those I never had to do it again. Would definitely do a new CPS while it's easy to get also since those are known to randomly crap out on these.

I'm certain his 8.1L Guru has told him about any weak points on these engines. Matt is no dummy, I'm sure he'll get the install finalized then pull that beast one last time and replace any damaged sensors and parts so this powerplant is bulletproof. No sense in doing it now when its being moved around, it would suck to replace a crank sensor now only to crush it in the mockup process. Were these engines prone to gasket failures like some of the earlier GM 2.8L and 3.3L's? I know these had breather system issues that contributed to the failure of the plastic intake gaskets. You'd get internal and external coolant/oil leaks as well as vacuum and if they weren't torqued correctly........ welp they were coming back soon after. I think the trans and engine cooling systems on this build will be very important, due to hot summer months and the weight and loads this rig will see. Shes gonna be heavy, engine and trans temps will be a challenge at first but for now the focus looks to be on weight distribution and spung weight while keeping the CG low inside the frame. His hands are kinda tied because the chassis and suspension are built. Great thought though man, sorry on the rant lol
@skeetermcswagger0U812
@skeetermcswagger0U812 Жыл бұрын
I would suggest to replace the Rear Main Seal,oil pump(and tack weld the pick-up tube on),Intake Gaskets if not a whole new intake manifold,Crank Shaft Positioning Sensor,new timing chain set,and new spark plugs before buttoning everything up. Would be able to set the engine lower in the chassis also by doing a dry sump system to get rid of 'most' of the oil pan and now would be the time to plumb it and those engines do consume a little more oil so the extra capacity will counter this and as an added benefit will keep the oil cooler and avert oil starvation at extreme angles when on steep inclines too!!! This thing is gonna be the Gravedigger of the Wrecker World. What an incredible 'undertaking'....LOL!!! P.S. Since it's gonna be used to get stuck,broken and buried souls back on top of solid ground, mabey they could call it 'The Grave Robber' ⚰🧲🏗🏜🏞
@seanworkman431
@seanworkman431 Жыл бұрын
What about headers to replace the original manifolds? You obviously know these engines well, we don't get much of that stuff in Australia, our large vehicles would be compacts in America so a Suburban going down the road looks like a block of units have escaped their foundation.

Awesome guys - I don't work with projects this big but, I thought I was the only one that approached projects this way. Take what you have and try to make it work. I have a friend who is far from mechanical but he will do anything to get water out to the desert water "guzzelers" (over a 100 of them) to keep the chucker population large enogh for each hunting season. The desert has been in a dry spell for a while so this really helps. I think you would be able to relate to his trips on "roads" that are barely recognizable as a walking paths. He's been doing it for years with the same 4X4 Dodge carrying 300 - 600 gals (truck and trailer). It surprises me that he can reach some of the places he gets to - empties into the guzzelers - comes out and does it again (a few flats and a couple of tortion bars have been sacrificed in the process). I can only imagine what he could accomplih=sh with a truck like that. I am enjoying this whole series. Thanks for sharing.

I hope you get to either mentor other women in the Military, or in the Trades in some way. Alternatively, your story is important to be told through either a Vlog, an interview or a book. Australia is currently going through a deep soul searching process where female Parliamentarians and Staffers report high levels of sexual abuse, as per the discovery process since the Brittany Higgins case. Elsewhere, women and girls report similar problems in Educational facilities across all levels, from Primary school to University, since Grace Tame became Australian of the Year, following her successful court case allowing victims to tell their story ("Let Her Speak"), and of course the Military has had ongoing investigations and recommendations for years. You'd be aware that the full potential of a Country can only be fostered, by having _"the other 50% employed happily and safely"._ Telling your story to a wider audience than just in these comments is vitally important for all women and girls. And yes, I'm an older guy (77), but I have many women and girls in my extended family, so I feel free to encourage such action. I spent most of my life working as an Allied Health Professional with female colleagues.

@@BrassLock thanks ever so much dav I think we are all capable to do any job be it be female or male orientated. I don’t know where in history us human beings ended up being sexist racist anti trans and gay. but we all have one life so don’t worry about what others are doing and do what you want to be as well who your meant to be we only have one shot at it then we are gone. we had a 30” of snow in three days I slide sideways in the 2020 Polaris Ranger 1000 EPs and was stopped when i got high centered on the 6 foot drop off.. Two wheels over two wheels on So I used the WWMD techniques and it worked great Anchored the high side of the top of the back roll cage to a tree using a4” tow strap/tree protector chain come a long for tension on the roll cage pivot tied off the Polaris with the two winch lines from two atvs to eliminate any way to roll. Then put the 10,000 bumper winch and winched and drove the UTV out with no danger or damage as if Matt was there helping. So we invented WWMD What Would Matt Do I used a number of skills I got from your channel thanks Matt..

Awesome to watch that L18 get some love. I stuffed that exact setup in my '97 Tahoe (minus the doubler) and it is a heavy drivetrain, for sure. I also went with a double cardan driveshaft. Made the rearend geometry much better. Damn, I really wanna drive her out there and see that wrecker in person. Looks like a fun build! Thanks for all the great vids, Matt and crew!

Matt is apparently a kindred spirit. You might be surprised how handy a claw hammer can be. Pulling/installing seals etc. I was an oilpatch field mechanic for many years, you only have room in your truck for what's truly useful or multipurpose. Odd as it may sound, a claw hammer was one of those tools.

A few thoughts for the mix, since it seems a lot of the build is still 'fluid.' I'd consider the use of a divorced transfer case in your final link to the axles. Since you are building for high ground clearance, one that puts your outputs below your input. I've got one here like that, patiently waiting for me to do something with it. Tag is gone, but I think it's a Rockwell 231 ... came out of a mid 60's binder that had front wheel assist. Keeping your drive lines out of the extreme angles will go a long way toward making them last, as you know. And ... since you could get a reputation of having a wrecker that will "go anywhere," beef it up everywhere you can, because you may start getting calls for a lot more than off-road play toys. Someone will get their bulldozer stuck in a place that mountain goats fear to tread, the wrecker will not only need to be able to get to it, it will need to be able to stand up to the pulling. Choose your winches and down rigging configurations carefully, for your work will be tested. 😬
