I just want to hear the dive siren at an airshow. That is the single most distinctive sound of WW2 and its a shame there are not any flying JU 87s in existence at the moment. I have to watch old WW2 films to hear the sound that instilled fear in the hearts of millions across Europe and I feel that sound should not be lost to history.

Wasn`t long before those Stuka pilots were the ones with fear in their hearts ,was it. Flying in that lumbering death trap when the Hurricanes were after `em. Had to be withdrawn from the fight . Then only used where there was total air superiority.... which pretty soon was nowhere.

@@billycaspersghost7528 True. The "D" models [--later versions just after this one ] had TWIN rear-gun machine guns, and at two different times, Rudel [--who could have switched to a ground-attack Henschel Hs-129 or Fw-190, and @ the end, Did fly the long-nose, Jumo-engined Fw-190D ] had rear-gunners that were So good, they themselves earned the Gold "Knight's-Cross of the Iron cross" defending Rudel's rear. How would you have liked going to see the Fuhrer, because you've earned a medal, and your rear gunner goes With you and gets an important medal, too? I mean, if you were a "Nazi-puke"? Each of his two best rear-gunners were lost after crashes, while trying to escape Soviet capture by ground forces. One was presumed shot, and the other drowned, nearly crossing a river, that Rudel successfully swam. The Battle of Britain, could've be won if they kept-up air-field attacks for a couple more weeks, rather than switching to bombing stupid London. I note the Italians "packed-it-up" with their "loser-aircraft", too after a while in the Battle. While Stuka could take a lot of punishment, they were "hurricane-meat", and I don't think any "Rustaz" twin rear-guns showed-up on the Ju-87Bs or "R"s. Flying to surrender in '45, Rudel broke the fixed landing-gear of his stuka, in a "controlled crash." He started, running his 1st ,training Stuka, into part of a building, while taxi-ing which almost "washed him out."

@@jackdale9831 when I was a boy many of bazillions of years ago, my uncles, WWII vets one and all, used to tell stories of the "howl" they made, but that it didn't last long as the Nazis air superiority was short-lived. all these years later to watch this and read here, it now makes sense. did American fighters ever engage with Stukas? Mustangs, Thunderbolts, Lightnings, etc...I spoke with a former german fighter pilot at an airshow 4 years ago and although he said as a whole they didn't have much to say for the others, but that British and American pilots and their aircraft and engaging with them definitely "made their pulse quicken." you ever hear this? thanks for the info and the video.

@@davidluck1678 You said it. But generally "effective" at what? They had their part in the Blitzkriegs early phases of the war ,1939 on to 1940. After that , pretty much had their day. They were blasted out of the sky over Britain and it was not worth wasting escort fighters on them for what amounted to an insignificant bomb load. They were tactical weapons in support of a sweeping army advance with the enemy in disarray and retreating. I can`t think of them being a factor in any Allied thinking at all. The Stuka had its moments ,1940 in the France, `41 in Crete and Russia maybe. Outside that it was `30 concept in a new bigger war.

Thank you so much for sharing your progress with us and especially thank you for restoring so many rare/extinct airplane types. Knowing how much work it takes to keep even small simple planes like Pipers & Cessnas in the air it is hard to imagine how much work, skill, money & time it takes to restore and operate rare & complex warbirds (even after this great in detail insight). It would be really cool if you would fly it in all of the paint schemes before applying the next coat and take air to air pictures with it. This way there would be photos of three "different" Stukas =)

Wow! It continues to amaze me that as time marches on even more obscure warbirds are being made airworthy again. When I was a hanger rat at Duxford in the mid 80's you were lucky to see more than a handful of Warbirds at airshows. Now we have virtually squadrons of them and long may it continue. The interest is the key and they are part of our historical heritage and an important living breathing memorial. Well done to all concerned. A remarkable effort.

What an amazing project !! I hope you can make a book out of the whole process. One thing which I don't understand, you say this to be Nr.: 6234, an early model, but the first picture of it shows it being a D-Model with the new engine cowling with the oil cooler placed under the engine, and the coolant raditors under the inner wings. The J Sub-version (to have been used with an intercooler in the D-Model) of the Jumo 211 engine was only introduced with the D-Model and had around 150 HP more than the F Sub-version being used in the early Bs and the early increased range R-models (capable to carry droptanks under the outer wings which the B-wings probably didn't support). As I understand you built a real early B/R-Model because the D-Model was designed structurally for drastically increased maximum loads. I hope the whole dive-brake mechanism will be put in as well, so we can see some nice vertical dives from 6000 feet altitude at airshows, without bomb weights the accelerations should be no problem for the airframe (?)

Nothing can possibly be 'a bit unique' or 'very much unique' or "somewhat unique', etc. Please substitute UNIQUE with SPECIAL or EXTRAORDINARY, etc.

+ raytrevor1 The info depends on the sub-model of the engine series. According to Battle of Britain movie trivia, they did get the RAF Stuka running although I have never seen a picture or home movie of that. It was decided that it was took risky to fly it for the movie. Somebody restored a 211 to ground running condition way back in the 1980s but I don't know what happened to it. And Dirk Bende in Germany overhauled two 211s for a special project back in the 1990s, but that project has changed to new owners.

I was volunteering at YAM Elvington in the 90s when their Halifax restoration was underway. People don't understand how difficult it is, even if you've got all the bits. One big challenge is perspex. My God is it hard. Finding a proper MK III blister was virtually impossible (other museums are helpful, but don't generally give you things) so the only option is to fabricate it, and thats when you learn just how hard it is to make optically clear curved perspex. Plus, as mentioned, restorations don't stop time, you have to maintain the aircraft _while_ you're restoring it; that involves managing corrosion and wear and tear.

Thanx for informative video--just wish I found it a year earlier! I'm now subscribed. Just a couple questions. From my reading, you have in your R-4 quite a rare Stuka--one of only a very few of the B/R series with a Jumo 211J. Does that account for the VS11 prop, that is usually seen in the D-1/D-3 series (VS5 in B/R, VS111 in D-5/G)? And when painting airframe, to what extent were you able to duplicate RLM paint--the actual chemical formulation? Thanx again. Very informative!

Well actually, the Chicago Stuka had been down in decades. Back in the late 70s or thereabouts, when it was suspended even higher up in a dome next to the Spitfire, it let loose of its moorings and took the big plunge to the marble floor. They repaired it but it no longer had the wheel spats and you could still see some twist to the wings. I last saw her around 1998 so those things may have been restored since. Survivor of WW2 aerial combat, nearly killed in Chicago. That figures.

@@FiveCentsPlease What with the Covid mess and Chicago's hideous pension and general debt, it might be timely for someone to try and buy the Stuka from the museum. Then this aircraft could be given a proper restoration. The motor is in the museum's possession also and was on separate display.

@@clevlandblock The Chicago Stuka is the only example still in the original WW2 paint, so I doubt it will ever change. The wheels and maybe gear struts are from a T6 after the damage from the fall. The last time I was there you could see a large dent in a thick second floor aluminum guardrail that the Stuka wingtip slapped on its plunge to the floor. That must have broken the wing. I'd be interested too see if the museum could produce photos of the damage. It made all the Chicago TV news channels back then. It's a good thing the rocket scientists at the museum back then didn't try to suspend the U-505 from the building's ceiling.

I'm sorry, this is NOT as "hard" as you're saying. If I had PLANS, one could be "fashioned, in flyable condition" in mere months, because you Don't need the original parts. A 3-D replicator can make the parts, in Better than original lightness & Strength. You also should NOT build the R-4 or any early model, because the greatest damage to the Soviets [--I understand this example was used in the desert/Mediterranean theatre, against the Western Allies] came from "D" models mounting the twin 37mm. Rudel's "D" was reportedly "worth" a couple of divisions, what with over 500+ Soviet tanks destroyed by he alone. The highest-decorated German Soldier of the war, and an "Ace", Hans Ulrich Rudel also had at least two Knight's cross of the Iron-cross rear-gunner/radiomen, which probably allowed him to return home, so many times. Also many Stukas were modified via what were called "Rustaz" [in the field] mods. Were you going to make a "Dobbas" aerodynamic collapsible freight/tool container? Will you make "Waffenbehalter"--machine-gun canisters that enhanced strafing? If flown, will it have operable "Jerico's Trumpet" sirens? OF COURSE, it will have operating dive-brakes?!? Some Noble, Jewish-workers built some of these if manufactured in the Junkers plant @ Dessau. The cheif differences between "B"s and "R"s were increased wing fuel-tankage and improved radios in the "R"s, beyond line improvements. If made flyable, I can garantee it will crash, which is why your building it with original-parts is reprehensible. You should build it as if it had to EXCEED its design parameters, because Then, it'd last longer and more could see it and Wonder, --underlying your good efforts. Perhaps not, if, Not flown @ 9/10ths as the Stukas in the field were flown. Some day, wealthy-pilots will gather dozens of these together,[--3-D Replicas ] and fly re-inactment-"missions", Mark my words. Oh, I forgot,--the Economy will be collapsed to Soothe Bil gHATES, so we have to "bend-over" to Big, Pig,-Pharma and its poisonous vaccines, due to the drum-beat FRAUD of Fauci & Pharma-OWNED media. The munitions wouldn't be real, but the shots will be, plus a part of our being Controlled. +Jack Dale "Plans" are not the same as correct engineering specifications for the materials and airframe strength, which would be found in original factory drawings (missing for most Stuka types) or carefully reverse-engineered. This rebuild used a little of both. A model kit can be manufactured from "plans." You need to meet the engineering standards for flight certification. Try to picture thousands of pages of documents. Plus you have an equally (if not more) complicated problem set to get an engine built and certified. Several groups are currently solving a similar problem for the Hawker Typhoon/Tempest series. With partial drawings and 3D scans of a survivor they are having to engineer much of the plane to correct standard using thousands of data points. scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/14241531_1113281068751042_3549421142273308168_o.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=C12KDabu8GcAX9JuphD&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.xx&oh=1409450dde252a9a502fa66a4f61f082&oe=5EBA65FA scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/14976788_1171187112960437_7781224010954828699_o.png?_nc_cat=105&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=NvNPdKVNo80AX8MC9_q&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.xx&oh=98dc70b09bfb5826066faa0983380977&oe=5EB91C50 scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/16177647_1245575762188238_8885904497738423065_o.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=V7wllTH5HpQAX_JNUwc&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.xx&oh=3f93223eb8f0bb59bd1494b20ea13c69&oe=5EBB0A7A

@@FiveCentsPlease The engine should be among the EASIEST parts to gather together. Other than the Rolls-Royce "kestrel" in the prototypes, and the Ju-87A[had a Ju 210], ALL Stukas had a version of the Junkers Jumo 211. Many Ju-88s had 211s,--the "H"-model Heinkle He 111s used 211s, --even some Focke-Wulf Fw 190Ds had a development of the 211, the 213, --thousands of Luftwaffe planes used the Jumo 211, throughout the war. If the "R" was mine, I'd fit the similar 213 for more power. No one would know, except I think it'd be safer with more power. I fail to understand why some techs want to "draw a curtain of mystery" around a "run-of-the-mill" dive-bomber,--an improved version of the early Ju-87Bs. IT IS "WONDERFUL" that ANY Stuka's being rebuilt to flying specs--that's AWESOME, and long, long overdue. I was a kid of 6 or 7, and as a kid,--I loved All planes. I had a "Lindberg" model of a Ju-87B, and was thinking of the "Jericho trumpet" mounted early in the war. We were at a company picnic, where some of the workers had been bombed/strafed by Stukas. A Ryan monoplane with wheel spats flew overhead, and only guessing what kind of plane it was, I yelled, "Dad, Dad,--a Stuka!" I couldn't understand until years later, why some co-workers quickly ducked-under the solid oak picnic tables, and my Father got VERY ANGRY. This was slightly more than 10 yrs after the war.

@@jackdale9831 What Jason Muszala is saying throughout the whole video is that the standards of the museum are so high for their flying aircraft that the restoration is focused on a particular version and, in this case, a specific airframe. What you say about making an "improved" Stuka restoration is very plausible since it would rectify issues and offer improvements to the original, but such an airplane would not represent any Stuka ever made. Imagine having a Toyota Corolla with the engine from a 1999, the transmission from a 2004, and the doors and hood from a 2002. If your insurance asked what year and make your Corolla is, you wouldn't give a straight answer for the year. You know it's a Corolla, but it's not any Corolla that was ever produced. Same logic goes for the museum's Stuka restoration. It cannot be a Stuka with the wings of a D model, the landing gear of a G, the engine of an R, and so forth. Going back to the Corolla example, imagine how hard it would be to make a Corolla with parts from Corollas from various different years of production. Many lines and connections wouldn't fit and would be very hard to make roadworthy. Imagine doing the same thing with an airplane. The Bf-109 was made under license in Spain by Hispano Aviation and it took years of experimentation and several versions with different engine and propeller combinations to yield a fine airplane, the HA-1112, several of which are flying today and called Bf-109s even though they have a Merlin engine. However, no Bf-109 flew with a Merlin. So, for what it's worth, the Stuka restoration done by Jason and associates is absolutely fantastic, and the video session vividly depicts the resuscitation of a one-of-a-kind airplane. WELL DONE!

@@Jazzdrummerperson Yaweh [God] Love Ya, phantom5420. By the way, you probably already Know that a "phantom" in hot-rodding, is a version of a car that we feel SHOULD have been produced, but for whatever reason, never was. A BF-109 airframe WAS mated to a Jumo 211/3 after the war by the Czech firm Avia. {Avia S199 } The IDF bought several, and Israel's 1st air victory was made over an Egyptian flying a Spitfire[IX? ] of the Egyptian Air Farce. I think the Avia is in an Israeli museum. I'd LOVE a Corolla with a melange of the Best parts, and I'd go by what is on the "Title." I don't give a crap about the insurance, although maybe you'd have to go with a "Collector-car Insurer." Finally, as long as it was "air-worthy", the Luftwaffe pilots wouldn't have CARED either, because as the war wound-on, pilots would have to wait, like car salesmen, for their "up" to fly. That's how a novice could be flying an "Expertan's plane, and if it was shot-down, the Allied airman might have thought he was REALLY "Something", shooting-down "So-n-so's" plane. It is rumored that I sat in the cockpit of the Midland, Texas HA-1112, but of Course, I didn't. If I Had, I would have found that the cockpit coming pinched my shoulders and looking through the windshield through the bullet-proof glass was about the size of a 4" x 6" card. Check-out that some versions of the Ju-88 "Wunderbomber" had BMW-built but liscenced Pratt & Whitney air-cooled radials if it wasn't using the liquid-cooled, V-12 Jumo 211s. By being meticulous, the museum's doing a Superior restoration.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: A good friend and survivor of the holocaust (who recently past away at 98 yrs of age), used to tell us horror stories about the whine of the Stuka sirens when they would attack her small town in Hungary. I think it would be best to keep your restoration project low key just like they did with the recent restoration of the ME-262 here near Seattle. Don't get me wrong, I'm a total WW-II plane nut, but now is not the right time to be tooting your horn about your Stuka restoration project and putting it on KZbin and other Media. Keep in mind, the Stuka (unlike the ME-262) was specifically developed to Terrify and kill innocent people. People like my friend who survived many Stuka attacks. Restoring a Stuka is like proudly restoring an oven from Treblinka. So please, tone it down a bit... Thank You, Sincerely, Dan Sotelo Mercer Island, WA
