Reading the other great comments about Buddy reminds me that he achieved all of his professional achievements in the span of 18 months. He was only 23 when he died. In that short time he managed to change music forever. He was a pioneer in so many ways; not only writing his own songs, but the instruments in the band, the techniques used to record the tracks, and using strings in a rock-n-roll song. With all of the musicians he inspired over the years we owe him a debit of gratitude for making our world a better place. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. RIP Buddy

Buddy Holly had a lot of big hits in his short time on Earth. "Rave On" would be my choice for his next song to react to. It's a much more driving rock and roll sound and reminiscent of the sound that he helped inspire that came out of the early British invasion of the 60's. Also "Not Fade Away" which the Rolling Stones covered early in their career. Also "Everyday" "Maybe Bayby" "It's So Easy to Fall in Love" and "Peggy Sue". My favorite is "True Love Ways" his experimental ballad which he tried to right a song beyond the "three chords" in standard rock and roll songs of the time. It's a beautiful love sing and one of the greatest in the rock and roll era. And yes, he was one of the pioneers who helped to evolve the sound of rock and roll.

Buddy Holly! Such a Legend. His music was the Major influence to the early Beatles stuff amongst just a few and such a variety of sounds he created, you will NEED to listen to a few more of his to see the difference

I appreciate your dedication to some of the earliest rock artists. Buddy Holly was a major pioneer in that he wrote his own songs. Please consider Be Bop a Loo La by Gene Vincent.

In the late 50s, a lot of bands dressed up for TV and concerts. His glasses were a huge fashion inspo, not to mention his skill as a singer/performer/songwriter. I find his sign definitely country tinged, but he also took musical “chances” using a full orchestra, for example. Definitely more to dig into with this man whose death inspired Don McLean’s magnum opus, “American Pie.” Yes, a pioneer.

You can cover this again on female Friday, with the Linda Ronstadt version. Generally speaking, when Linda sings a song, it becomes hers. :) BTW, if I have it right, the guitar Buddy is playing - the Stratocaster - became popular after this performance. A ton of people who wanted to play rock bought one. This list includes Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and David Gilmore (Pink Floyd).

"That'll Be the Day" hit #1 on the Billboard's Hot 100 in May 1957 - and also shot to #2 on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues chart. That could explain why Holly and his band - still being called the Crickets - (there was a little misconception that they were black) & they were the first white act to be booked into Harlem's famed Apollo Theater

Love your reactions to this legend. Yes, the Beatles were big fans and did a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Words of Love”, an excellent song. In fact the Beatles name were inspired by him, beetles, like crickets. Anyways, love the song Peggy Sue (I used to listened to it over and over, as a kid) but I think Words of Love is an amazing. Buddy Holly was such a huge influence on the history of rock. I have spent so much time wondering what his music would have been like if he had the chance to get old. Such a unique voice. I've always loved his hiccup in his voice. Yes he was one of the early pioneers of rock. So much more to explore with him. The Beatles did a lot of covers over their career.

"That'll Be the Day" was recorded the year I was born, 1957, and was covered by Linda Ronstadt in 1976. There's a OKC connection with Buddy as well. One of his hits, "Maybe Baby", was recorded in a hangar at Tinker. The Beatles covered Buddy's 1957 song "Words of Love" in 1964. If you listen to both songs one after the other, you will hear the influence Buddy had on The Beatles. The Rolling Stones covered Buddy's "Not Fade Away". Many artists consider Buddy Holly a major influence.

Love Buddy Holly, and he was a pioneer in Rock & Roll. He tragically passed away too soon In an airplane crash with Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper. Don McClain later sang about that event calling it “The Day The Music Died” in the song entitled American Pie. ❤️✌🏼😎 Please don’t forget about Beth Hart. I’m still patiently waiting. 😂

Buddy Holly died in February 1959 and was one of the biggest artists at the time. He was only 22 at the time of his death. Many believe he would have been bigger than Elvis if he had lived. The Beatles were big Buddy Holly fans and Paul McCartney owns the rights to all the songs Buddy Holly wrote. Many groups from the British Invasion era credited Buddy Holly as an influence. "That'll Be the Day" and "It's So Easy" are 2 of the most covered songs in music history.

The classic rock band formation became the two guitars, bass and drums outfit because of Buddy Holly & The Crickets. He was enthusiastically well received by youngsters in the fifties who loved his songs; he sold well for his label to keep investing in his new singles; all this still in life. However, after his sudden untimely death (03 Feb 1959) he became even more renown and revered. The Crickets themselves, without Buddy did reasonably well also. It's been commented here already but I'll repeat it, John Lennon chose an insect as a name for his group (The Beatles) due to the example of Buddy Holly and The Crickets. Buddy Holly sung his own songs which was another influence for kids who dream to be future musicians during rock's infancy. His example was amplified exponentially by the success of Lennon-McCartney four years later. Yes Chuck Berry and Little Richard were even bigger and also wrote their own songs, but, among the white skinned rockers, Holly wrote, sang and played all of his material, many of them becoming hits. He is the prime example, followed closely by Carl Perkins, another great influence on rock in general and more specifically The Beatles; most notably George Harrison. Check out early Carl Perkins as well. He is the author of and first to record the rock 'n' roll anthem Blue Suede Shoes, later recorded and made world famous by Elvis Presley.

Buddy took a lot from country and blues and added his own touch. He was lost way too soon. The day the music died. Buddy had been married about a year when he passed. He was 22. Buddy took the name for this song from a John Wayne movie called The Searchers. Somebody said to Wayne that he was going to do something (in the movie) and his answer was That'll be the day. As far as his influence the Rolling Stones first top ten single was a cover of Buddy's Not Fade Away. It is said that the Beatles chose their name as a tribute to the Crickets, and Paul McCartney bought the publishing rights to Buddy's music a few years back. When Buddy and the guys hit the charts with a couple big songs they started getting noticed by bigger venues. A booking agent called a radio station after hearing Buddy's songs being played and asked how to get in touch with him. He offered the boys a spot on a show at the Apollo in NYC. The guy had never seen Buddy and the guys and didn't realize they where white lol. When they showed up backstage the guy tried to back out. Buddy said he understood and they would leave ... as soon as they got payed. The guy decided they should play and the theater went silent when they went on stage. A few seconds after they started the crowd went nuts and they killed it.
