We convert a mud bottoms catfish pond into a sparkling clear mountain stream water for trout. Thanks to Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops and Princess Auto for your help in making this video!
Complete fish pond playlist: • Building a NEW FISH PO...
Unfortunately my pond in Northern Ontario is adjacent a swamp that is filled with muck and clay soil which makes a total mess for a trout pond, but we are doing something to fix this.
The pond trout are coming belly up and dying for some unknown reason. I spend the day trying to figure out why all the pond fish are dying. I test the water temperature, make sure the fish are getting food and oxygen, and check the water clarity.
The fastest way to dig a big pond is to use the help of a qualified excavator. This excavator normally digs out house foundations and the operator has years of experience digging giant holes in the ground and removing mountains of material.
In the previous episode we had Clarke from Lyndon Trout Ponds and Fish Hatchery measure water quality of our fish pond for oxygen and water temperature. This pond was also monitored year round to see if it holds enough water and has the depth the fish need to stay cold. Rainbow trout need good to excellent water quality and plenty of oxygen. Water flow is an asset to help fish spawn. We discovered that the water in our pond is filled continuously with the help of ground water and is very cold, even in the summer. Trout will die if water gets above 25 degrees Celsius. Shade also helps keep water cool and our pond is sheltered for a good part of the day with trees.
You will need to find out what kind of soil you are working with. Is it clay, clay-loam and sandy loam are best for holding water. You will want to avoid limestone, shale, sand and gravel-they leak. Except in our case since the gravel is actually part of the ground water, which is ideal. You can ask around to find out if your pond will leak or will hold water year round. You don't want your pond to dry up in the middle of the summer.
Our plan to excavate the remainder of the pond, pushing the size out to about a half acre in size and a water depth of around 8 feet. 15 feet is more ideal, but our base is shale and therefore can not be dug any deeper.
A trout pond is very difficult to establish, but it is very possible to do correctly if you know what the fish need.

I'd love to come and help as well. I live up in the Bruce Peninsula and just moved onto a 1/2 acre property that backs onto a friend of the families 400 acre property which is mostly mixed bush, some swamp, and a sizable pond with a river that runs through it. Would love to see if something like this could work there and have some fresh fish to harvest in the future. Send me a DM if you're interested in some free labour! lol @TheWoodedBeardsman

It was a great idea. When Kevin said he was going to do it, not sure we have a full understanding of the effort required. It's taken us over a month! I think the issue I had was getting enough rock to make a difference, but the geo works it so we only need 1 layer, not a bunch to keep the silt on the bottom. Hopefully it works.

Nice to see new vid/ I grew up on a large spring fed farm pond in upper Midwest. We were 1st house on it. Great fishing as 3 small islands. There was brush/shrubs all around edge of pond. As more houses developed, eventually all around. All that shrub was eventually gone. Then silt and such issues began. Oxygen airaider needed also. So hopefully that lining helps. Good luck and enjoy your vids.

The rocks that come to the surface in Farmer's fields keep rising and break the field machinery so removing them saves the cost of fixing and/or replacing the machinery - not to mention the time down working the fields when the machinery is down and between the constantly changing weather. Being a farmer with rocks in the field is so stressful.

about 65, 000 rocks on a very rough estimate. (Just in case you wanted to know) (avg rock was 8 inches) (although they look to be 6 inches to me.) Also you may want to get some fresh water clams to filter the water.

Dig a wide (15-20 foot) non steep (1-2 foot in center) V shape trench from way up on the hill down to the pond. Cover the entire trench with a pond liner all the way down a couple of feet into the pond. Then put a tank in the ground at the top as a fill basin. Make an over flow from that basin that spills onto the liner. Cover the entire pond liner with the stone. Run another pump to that basin tank from the pond and let the water flow down back into the pond...a spiffy new stream will create a lot of aeration and a huge bio filter.

Side-graded = made a lateral move to Catfish like a muddy bottom, you might want to try them. I think sturgeon might as well, not sure though. I live in Sacramento, Ca and part of our flood control system for the Sacramento River is the Yolo Bypass. They open gates to let the water out of the river to take pressure off the levees. The water can still be relatively deep and the sturgeon move out of the river into the bypass. The problem comes up when they close the gates and the bypass starts to dry out, and sturgeon end up land locked and stranded. Because sturgeon are a protected species Fish and Game goes out to collect and move them. Sturgeon are really cool, and delicious as well. I saw that you have a Canadian Sturgeon that isn't protected, so you could possibly try them.

You may have to try to get something in there that creates a bacterial filter that keeps healthy nitrifying bacteria if you can't constantly supply clean oxygenated water like at a trout farm. Did you check for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate as well as dissolved O2 in this pond? A trickle waterfall should have enough oxygenating action as well as healthy bacterial buildup on the rocks it trickles over. Water should be very cold as well- gas doesn't like being dissolved in warm liquids (warm coke on a hot day burning your nose when you go to drink it). The more surface area you have between the spaces of rock/gravel at the bottom of your pond should help with bacteria as well. Looking good- those rocks and the space between them should be much better with this bacterial surface area as well as a space for things that the trout like to eat to hand out (larva, minnows, etc.).

Have you thought about filtration? There is a way to get the water grom the bottom of the pond, up through a natural filtration system and have the water pour back into the pond. The end result should be clean water that is getting the necessary oxygen as the water rolls and tumbles over the rocks going back into the pond.

A ripper attachment would have come in handy for getting those rocks dug up. Maybe for "next" time? lol Would freshwater mussels survive the cold in your pond? If so, then they'd be a good addition, as they filter water like crazy. It might seem odd, but oysters and mussels filter enormous volumes of water for their size. Where I live there's been a lot of work in building oyster banks for just this reason in a saltwater passage, but it also works in freshwater with mussels. If you look at places like Europe you see walls surrounding fields that have been farmed for centuries. The walls are all made from field stones collected over the years and built up to 10 feet high in some places. Even barns and houses have been built this way. For the "sheer drop" you could use a galvanised mesh and steel posts to form a net that leans back into the slope and fill behind it with smaller rocks.

Well, if the base is 23x14... The surface area is 322ft... Let's say 10 rocks fit in each square foot. That's 3,220 rocks just on the base. Let's say all 4 sides are the same size as the base. 3,220x5= 16,100 rocks.

I'm thinking if you guys would of filled the bottom with rocks, you could of dumped rocks up the banks as you went, and the rock weight would prevent rocks sliding to the bottom.

Yup. The only thing is that the bottom wasn't finished first...logistic issues.
