Just a heads up Andy, if you find someone to close behind you, just lightly tap the rear brake pedal, not enough to engage the brake pads but enough to activate the brake light switch underneath the pedal itself, your rear brake light will alert them to at least back off, after all, they don't want to run into the back of you in case they damage their car.

@@bikerofatlantis To be honest, it was a lot harder than I thought it would be! Like yourself, the slow manoeuvres absolutely killed me! Thankfully, my training school are really good and they realised (as a slightly larger man), that I was struggling on a 125cc due to lack of power. I then got put on a 350cc BMW for the rest of my CBT which was a blast! Even gave me a go on the 800cc for the last couple of hours in the car park!

I think new riders should practice off-road on a scrambler/endurance bike. We used to hire all the gear and do easy hill climbs. Great for balance, control, and feeling what the bike is doing. You learn really fast when not to use the front break! Oh, and coming off hurts less on mud. Thanks for the video.

I love watching these videos man keep it up! One of the safest places to be on the road ESPECIALLY during any bad weather is on the left or right side of the lane. The middle part of the lane is extremely dangerous because it leaves you in a blind area because there is a massive car in front of you so you can't really see too well in front of you, as well as the car in front of you would have a little more difficult time seeing you depending on the car. On top of that, the oil that comes off cars over time spill into the middle of the lane, making that area of the road become super slick quicker than the sides during bad weather. For a learner, it would be best to hang near the edge of the road so if you need to escape you can veer off the side instead of on coming traffic. You're doing great tho man, stay safe brother.

You’re learning quickly. I learned to ride in the 70s (now I’m in my 70s) and rode through the winter on a Honda 250. Came off on ice a couple of times. In the summer, after passing my test, I bought a CB 400F. Lovely bike. Came off it going up towards Hoyland Common when a woman in a black Capri stopped dead to let a Tracky bus pull out. I used a little bit too much back brake, they were drums back then, no ABS, and it locked. Spat me off. Luckily I had engine bars, so not much damage. She got out of her car and asked me if I was OK. I won’t write here what my reply was. Now driving four wheels, but I still drive defensively.

Well done not dropping your bike! At least your instincts saved you after you hit the mud. One reason I avoided getting a 125 is they usually only ever have cbs so both brakes always work together but with older/bigger bikes they are independent. So you can drag the rear brake without it touching the front brake. Also one thing that you can see from the mud trail is the front wheel always tracks a larger arc than the rear. It's good to remember when doing slow speed drills so you don't clip the cones.

4:55 It's target fixation. Scary stuff. I'm a new rider myself, just picked up my first bike about 2 months ago now, and had a moment like that this past week. Was riding through a local nature reserve (and speeding a bit) enjoying the scenery and turns when I came on the tightest turn there. I'd done 55mph around it but thought it'd be fun to try a little faster so didn't slow down from 65. Everything was fine at first but it's a reducing radius curve and my eyes caught the edge of the road which felt like it was coming up super fast. If I'd kept looking around the turn and committed I know I could've made it just fine but I fixated on that outside edge. I went wide into the opposing lane and had to emergency brake to not run off the road and into a tree. It was very lucky that another vehicle wasn't coming the other way at the time. Keep learning and don't be dumb like me!

Be very careful with jet washing , always use a low pressure washer like those from Muck Off as the more powerful car units can remove the coatings used on the bikes. Another way is to use the battery powered low pressure washers which you can use with a bucket of water also very handy for those odd places on the motorhome like around roof vents where you do not want high pressure to damage the sealant.

Do you have a pinlock insert installed on your helmet? it is a must for bad weather riding, just be aware there are 3 levels of pinlock 30,70,120 the higher the number the better the protection against misting up. another thing is get some rainex on the outside, make sure you get the stuff for plastic think it has a green label on a yellow bottle and not glass and it will help the rain bead up and keep your visor clear. something else that helps when doing 40mph+ is turn your head to the side but keep looking where your going and the rain will run off the visor then turn your head to the other side and it will run the water off the other side of the visor, you need enough wind speed to do it though it doesnt work as much at slow speeds.

Hi, enjoying the show. Just a bit of advice from hubby who rode bikes for over 40 years, get yourself a high viz jacket, you're wearing black on a black bike, it looks good but not safe in the dark or poor weather. xx

So something worth knowing - regarding the weather and riding the bike this is - motorcycle tyres are shaped differently from a car. While aquaplaning isn't impossible, the curve on the outside of the tyre means that motorcycle tyres shed water far more effectively. In shallow puddles and such, the bike actually deals with it really well. However... In slightly deeper water / "British" potholes, the bike CAN still lose traction. The thing to keep in mind is that, due to the shape of the tyre, it sheds water better - but there's also MUCH less tyre in contact with the road at any time. Only a few square inches, compared to a car tyres very flat contact-surface!

@@bikerofatlantis No worries dude. I'm loving seeing how eager and thirsty for the adventure of biking you are haha. I'm glad you have had a harmless but educational experience involving slippery sludge on the road surface now, too. You know what it's like now. Be careful if that very fine road silt!

My Hubby says put washing up liquid on the inside of your vizier. Not on the outside as if it rained you might look like a bubble head. Could do with a lanolin rub myself. Lots of rusty bits 😮Great vlog as always.

To be seen in the dark or winter I use the Richa Flare Jacket at night and a fluorescent yellow works jacket during the day. Both give you presence on the road and both have improved car driver behaviour around me. Normal biking gear underneath.

Target fixation is the phase you’re looking for and it’s real.. believe me, I’ve suffered it. Just look where you want to go, not where you don’t want to go. 🤣🤣🤣 Good luck with your riding. We’ve all been there, so know exactly how you feel. Just stay focused and enjoy the experience. 😊

Yes Andy, being a biker makes you a better car driver, that's why I think abroad, alot of people start off on scooters and mopeds,so I found when riding abroad, car drivers seem a bit more aware of bikes.Look out for DIESEL spills,like ice..take care.

Loving your vids guys. Keep it up. Something to look forward to while you're getting through your first winter of riding and all the learning experiences that entails. If you think you like the biking community now, wait until Easter. Once you're into the new year, I'm sure people will be reaching out to you about joining an Easter Egg Run. Don't pass it up, it will blow your mind 🙃

Its not just chinese bikes Andy, I like a load of bikers use ACF 50 for protecting the bike fabulous stuff, can actually reverse rust formation, I dont use rain ex thou i use nikwax wax visor guard pal but my helmet is viper V171 with front flip and Bluetooth so i always have the option to drop the inner eye guard and flip the bottom of the helmet up in the rain. Ride safe Gaz

Great video guys, I don’t know how I stumbled across your videos. But I enjoy watching people learn and pick up new skills. I have ridden and raced bikes since 11 yrs old and still ride MX to this day and also my road bikes. Once biking gets in your blood, it’s in for life. There really is nothing that compares wait until you can go out with your wife as pillion for a ride together and have a lovely lunch out and just fun days out together on the bike. As a couple it really is great, any way I digress. Great videos and I love both your commentary. good stuff and I think your videos are excellent, and will encourage new riders to give it a go. As for cars following close behind and right up your chuff. without sound sexist (coz I ain’t) avoid going out during school run times in built up areas. In my many years experience, mums on the schools runs are the ones to avoid like the plague & are horrendous for tailgating and also driving whilst being distracted and not focusing on what’s around and in front of them. If they are running late to pick the kids up they are like kamikaze pilots.

Hi,the lanoguard you used is in my opinion the best product to use by far. Wait till you try and get it off its a nightmare as even a hot jet wash won't touch it. I use a cloth with some kerosene on it and it come off easily then but like lanoguard it also stinks.😊

Good that you experienced that with a good recovery, diesel will do the same thing. A heavier bike might take you down if you're caught out like that. If you end up on an adventure bike, consider the crash bars, not only will they protect your bike, they can provide more space between you and the bike on top of you. Sounds like I'm saying a crash is inevitable but I'm not, just best to think about safety! There's a great channel called Moto Control that gives great beginner advice on how bikes operate principally. You've also just reminded me I need to do my ACF-50 treatment! Thanks for the videos. Ride safe, hope to see you out there!

I’ve generally found I can smell diesel on the road b4 I see it , also always expect it to be on the floor on roundabouts that have a petrol station next to them 🤦♂️

I have to say, your picking up the skills very well. You never stop learning, you just see things earlier and try to react accordingly. As for people who tailgate, I'll even just pull in and let them by. Car drivers don't see half the problem a bikers sees. And are just always in a rush. After a while you'll notice, your camera is not the only 360° vision you have. As you will be looking everywhere to see possible occasions where you need to react. A plus note to night time riding, Oxford now do a waterproof overjacket. That is a silver colour that reflects light like your stripes on your jacket, but it's the whole jacket that reflects.

4:13 ignore whoever commented that the manoeuvres you are practicing aren't in the mod 1, they are. After manual handling comes a slalom into figure of 8s. After that you do a slow ride (walking pace) and then a U-turn. Next comes the 3 higher speed runs through the corner and into a controlled stop, an emergency stop, and a swerve (minimum 31 mph for the last 2, they'll tell you the speed on the first one, use it to make sure you'll be going fast enough for the other 2).
@bikerofatlantis2 ай бұрын
Thanks for this. I’m wanting to practice as much as I can 👍
@neilp18852 ай бұрын
When practicing, pretend you are on a road and do a lifesaver before moving off, doing your manoeuvres, etc, as that's what they expect to see on the test even though you are in a closed off area without any other vehicles. Doing it when you are practicing will get you into the habit so you'll do it on your test, and, maybe more importantly, when you are on the road with other vehicles and about to make a U-turn or some other manoeuvre.

I think it’s a positive that you felt the front go and rescued it Andy. It will prepare you better for the future. I know I say it every week but it’s good to see you practicing as you’ll reap the rewards of that. Good to see you’ve changed your kit for the Winter as well, mind you at this time of year we don’t get to shake our heads at people wearing shorts and the flip flops of invincibility 😂😂
