This song came out in 1987 and I was pregnant with my first child, so whenever I hear this song I think about my beautiful daughter who’s 35 now and who became everything I’ve ever dreamed of.

If you lived in a major metropolis in the early 80s, there is that quiet time at around 4am . This song was perfect to listen to while driving through those quiet streets after a great night.

I remember driving through the city in the wee hours after work in the ‘80s and listening to this. There was a quiet but energizing calm and camaraderie at that time with the few workers who were around. It was a special time.

there is something so mesmerizing about this song...it's like a cool Summer's night, the skyline is lit up, and you are about to either meet someone.. or you've already met them and they are standing with you or sitting with you at a table on a balcony looking out into the dark, talking about life...sigh...me and my active imagination..lol

High above the heat of a summer New York street An out of work musician plays a solo saxophone He's a preacher and a teacher And he stands up all alone Stranded in the dark of a vision in the park A poet in his madness tries to find another line And he's losing and he's using And he says he's doing fine And they look from such a height That somehow it's all right They're talking back to the night It's all that they can do Talking back to the night It's how they make it through If you listen you can hear them Their voices draw you near them They're talking back to the night for you Something seems to take every dime the man can make His dream is getting smaller and he wonders where to turn And he's trying hard to make it And he's trying not to burn Woman never minds, pulls the shade and draws the blinds She takes him in the darkness where the loneliest can feed She gives him all she has to And it's no more than he needs

@@joeadler5379 I think you weren't paying much attention during the 80s or you lived in some kind of bubble. The guys I went to college with in the 80s all expected to be millionaires by the time they turned 30 and any talk of using our educations to help people or benefit society was called "hippy talk". When I entered the corporate workplace everything was unfriendly mergers, putting people out of work, and profits at any cost. It wasn't until the mid-90s that attitudes began to change. I bought over 400 albums in the 80s so it's not like I didn't like the music. And I'm not Christian so I don't know why you're recommending that crap to me when there is *so* much excellent music being made these days. Check out some of the top 10 lists on Spotify or iTunes -- lots of well made catchy and clever songs!

An incredible song, a timeless masterpiece both in music and words - and produced with Steve Winwood playing all the instruments himself, at least on the original recording. A musician myself, I play several instruments - but having the scope and vision to put them all together in such a soulful, captivating way that makes them swing and groove despite the "artificial" studio production circumstances, despite the cold synth sounds of the day, and despite the temptation of overproducing the whole thing - that is just an unbelievably complex, superhuman achievement. Just WOW - all through the 34 years that I´ve known this song. It makes me cry and rejoice every single time I listen to it. Steve Winwood is an absolute genius.

Amazing song. Beautiful commentary on human existence, meaning, despair, love, and artists. This is not just jazzy music for a beer commercial in NYC. We are all talking back to the night in one way or another. For many years I talked back to the night 🌙 all around us all, looking everywhere for the light. That's the role of the thinker and artist. Really, that's the yearning of every person. Searching the darkness for meaning and a "higher love." Then, the Light and Love of the world 🌎 (John chapter 1) found me!!! Now I'm talking back to the Light!!! The higher Love, Christ, finds us. I pray He will give you a new ❤️ too! Thanks Steve! This is your Magnum Opus! John chapter 1...Grace to all.

This song epitomized the mid to latter 80's avante-garde vibe of night life culture and music style in the dance clubs. Everyone was swilling Michelob Lite so much so that this song was made into the best "The night belongs to Michelob" commercial in my opinion. Miss this music and era of the 80's where everyone got along, partied together and had a great time. Winwood may have had the most underrated voice and music creativity in the 60's to 80's time frame. Nobody and I mean nobody currently can sing like Steve Winwood can.

Steve Winwood didn't catch on here big until fairly late. His early Spencer Davis Group and Traffic work certainly got airplay but he didn't become a household name. His greatest work "Arc of a Diver" didn't seem to make a ripple. 1982's "Talking Back to the Night" came and went unnoticed...even by me. 1986's "Back in the High Life" finally broke it wide open in America and the 1987 album "Chronicles" made it official.

When this song came out I was in school in rural Ohio, but this made me feel like I was there. With every beat, with every chord I felt like I was living it--and it helped get me through those emotionally uphill school years.

Me, too. I had a couple of Trans Am’s and loved hearing Steve Winwood at night cruising home after a long nights work on the afternoon shift. Long about midnight it was just me and my car with Steve Winwood blasting out of the stereo.

There are many videos of this awesome song on KZbin, but this one has to be my favorite as it PERFECTLY captures the overall feel & the lyrics!!!!!!! High above the heat Of a summer New York street An out-of-work musician Plays a solo saxophone He's a preacher and a teacher And he stands up all alone Stranded in the dark Of a vision in the park A poet in his madness Tries to find another line And he's losing and he's using And he says he's doing fine And they look from such a height That somehow it's all right They're talking back to the night It's all that they can do Talking back to the night It's how they make it through If you listen you can hear them Their voices draw you near them They're talking back to the night for you Something seems to take Every dime the man can make His dream is getting smaller And he wonders where to turn And he's trying hard to make it And he's trying not to burn Woman never minds, Pulls the shade and draws the blinds She takes him in the darkness Where the loneliest can feed She gives him all she has to And it's no more than he needs And they look from such a height That somehow it's all right They're talking back to the night It's all that they can do Talking back to the night It's how they make it through If you listen you can hear them Their voices draw you near them They're talking back to the night for you And they look from such a height That somehow it's all right They're talking back to the night It's all that they can do Talking back to the night...........

Perfect for a twilight summer, around 20:30 pm...on atop of a hill with an open-wide view upon a suburban scenery view, dissappearing as long the remaining sunlight still stands...clear skies, nice breeze. Man, that's awesome! Some of those things that I'm grateful for being alive!

Steve Winwood. - They’re such a talented band. Stood the test of time. Used to go to all their gigs way back. Their music is just as good as today’s bands. Better, in my opinion. The Good Old Days, long since gone, unfortunately.

I remember when he was with Blind Faith. Traffic, Spencer Davis Group, Cream and Mary Ann Faithful. Eric Clapton used to sneak him in the the pubs to play because he was underage. He still sounds great!! This track is by far one of his best. I also loved"Arc of a Diver", and "Chronicles" . Steve OWNED the late '80's and '90's imho
