On this episode: The Rockers have to be the most interesting story of a tag team in the history of WWE! We cover their starts in the business individually, who put Marty and Shawn in the car together for the first time, who they learned from individually, who they wrestled in their first tag match, how they got to the AWA for their first big break, a hilarious casino story that sets the tone for their careers, Gagne's suggestions for them, the inspiration for their name, who they tried to emulate, the ribs the Rockers pulled in the AWA, how the partying stories about the Rockers grew, who pushed for them to come in, who Marty had a relationship with, how they left the AWA, what happened a month before that possibly changed everything, what an agent said to them on their first day, what really happened at the bar on their first night in, what Vince said the next day, how they were fired, the infamous "boots" comment from Vince, how Shawn got them ran out of Continental so quickly, how the legend of their WWF firing grew, who turned them heel which gave them another chance, how they got back in and out of the AWA, who pushed to bring them back, which of the boys told them how to fix their heat, what warning Vince gave them before they started back, who they had to win over in the locker room, a year long rib, who wouldn't sell for the Rockers, who Shawn says helped the Rockers earn their "degree" in being a tag team, the night before their first WrestleMania, how much they made their first year in the WWF, Iron Man tag matches, the crazy promo with Warrior and athletic tape before Survivor Series 89, who the Rockers got a good match out of that really caught the office's attention, Shawn's motorcycle accident, the broken rope story with the Hart Foundation that changed everything, did Bret politic to keep the tag titles, the entire Chuck Austin story including who paid what, what wrestler demonstrated the move in court, who testified against Vince here too, the famous hotel fight that Roddy Piper witnessed, how Savage kept everyone out of jail, how Vince tried to fix it the next day, what led to the Rockers wanting to quit, the offer from WCW, how Shawn tried to play "damage control" with Vince, and the fall out that followed. Then we move on to the break up angle, who had the idea to use the glass, the "he said, he said" that led to a fractured relationship for years. Marty's firings, hirings, whether or not Shawn buried Marty to Vince after their Rumble match, who pushed for him to have those second changes, the arrests, the New Rockers, and how Shawn got Marty to give his new found faith a shot. We answer your questions and of course address the controversial Facebook post from last year.
Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard is an audio podcast that discusses topics, events, wrestlers and memorable moments through the lens of former WWE executive Bruce Prichard co-hosted by Conrad Thompson.
The show was launched in August 2016 on MLW Radio. The episodes typically range from 2 hours to 4 hours in length, and include discussions about previous WWE pay-per-views and former WWE wrestlers.
Plus side bars about Vince speaking carny, working babyface, the wrestler handshake, the definition of psychology, why so many were influenced by Flair, how Shawn would have done in JCP, the Southwest territory, the "boss" being out of touch, why some guys were never able to break out of the "enhancement talent" title, Bruce burying an "old timer" he only met one time, Terry Garvin -- who we never discuss, the importance of the ESPN TV contract, the influence of Dynamite Kid and Tiger Mask matches, what precautions were taken after the Austin injury, the WWF-SWS relationship, house show title changes, Shawn's indy fed, and the "greatest tag teams in history" debate.

The Rockers are the reason I started watching wrestling on a regular basis. They'll always be my favorite wrestlers of all time. 2 thoughts I've always had:1. The Rockers, The Hart Foundation and Demolition should all be in the HOF 2. Wouldn't it have been better to have the Rockers & Harts at WM 7 & give the Rockers the titles then? They were always an excellent pairing (The SNME match you guys reference is still one of my favorite matches ever). THey would have stole the show at that WM & then the Rockers could drop the belts to LOD at Summerslam & to me, it would have made the breakup that much more impactful. BTW, I love the idea of matching Shawn & Marty with Ax & Smash in singles matches & losing before winning the belts in a tag match!

A Nasty Boys episode would be cool the problem was they arrived in the WWF in January 1991 and Bruce was fired in May 1991. Bruce was rehired in September 1992 and the Nasty Boys left in April 1993 so I guess yes you can stretch it and look at both parts but the problem is the biggest parts of the Nasty Boys WWF run occurred when Bruce wasn't there.

This was a great podcast! I remember seeing the match between the Rockers and Power and Glory during Summerslam 1990. Now I know the reason for Shawn's knee injury. The Rockers and the Brain Busters were two of the top 5 best WWF tag teams of all time. The Michaels and Jannetty angle could have been so much better as they were wrestling doppelgängers in that they had the same moves and style, and it would have made very evenly matched contests.

This was a great podcast on the Rockers and Marty Jannetty. Who would thought that 22 years ago Vince was as hot and cold as he is now. I was laughing every time that Marty was hired and fired like Bruce and Conrad. The reason why I did cause I didn't want to cry cause even though at times it might have appeared as Marty was battling demons, backstage politics led to every firing. I can see Shawn getting a 3rd induction with the Rockers. I can't believe they didnt win the WWF Tag Team Championship due to a ring break. I can't buy that. My gut tells me that Bret and or Jim didn't want the Hart Foundation to lose the WWF Tag Team Championship to the Rockers.

2:03:00 the dick succumbed t-shirt? Like a sore peter, tough to beat t-shirt?... Just prior to that the match they were talking about the 2 outta 3 with the busters was easily the best match they ever had. And I was a little kid and remember that match hooked me more than anything else on that night. Tully n Arn are a once in a lifetime team. Amazing.

This team was soooo 80's. Probably my favorite as a kid. Turns out Shawn was a user. Used Janetty as long as he needed to. When they started to get big in WWF, Michaels was afraid Marty would get a spot instead of him. So, he screwed him. Marty Janetty could've been as big as HBK. But Shawn wasn't going to let that happen.

Chad Pugh Shawn didn't screw Marty, Marty screwed Marty! The WWE gave him so many chances. The biggest shot though was when Marty said he was leaving for WCW. Even if Shawn told Marty he'd go, Marty was the one who told Vince he was out. That show of lack of loyalty combined with Marty hurting Austin and all the drug problems and charges pushed Marty out of his dream position. He could have been a big name but the timing of bad choices hurt him.

Marty was never getting over he wasn't even close to as good as Shawn was at any point at any thing Shawn knew the key to success was as a singles wrestler Marty was holding him back and Marty knew Shawn was going to be a big deal and has always been jealous of Shawn do u really think Marty could of had the 20 something year run Shawn had get real no one has had more success that Shawn in ring maybe Rick flair but no one else comes close

@@dr.trichome6419 Yeah cause Marty was so great he went on to have a great career oh no wait he is only remembered as the guy who use to be shawns partner and never did anything else Marty had the same opportunity as Shawn but continued to screw it up he was never as good as Shawn after they got to wwe everyone could see that Marty was holding Shawn back from doing great things

i used to think of them as Rock and Roll Express rip offs. Marty was the Morton, Shawn was the Gibson until Shawn turned heel. Too bad Rock and Roll express didn't get more training from Verne Gange when they left the NWA in 87 and went to the AWA.

I liked Marty better, he was the leader of the team. Marty should have held the IC title longer as well as the WWF tag title. they could have won them from money inc

People bitching about ads in the first 15 minutes. News flash: most of it wasn't even ads. They were talking about cool stuff they've got going on in the current time. And regardless, they explore each topic they covering extremely deeply. They're not just sitting there talking about nothing. They're entertaining you! Why wouldn't they deserve some kind of compensation for that? Give us all a break. If you don't want to hear it, then move forward on the crawl bar.

Marty should have been a big star as well. He almost certainly wouldn't have been the level of a star that Shawn Michaels was but he was a fantastic worker. He could have been a Christian to Shawn's edge. Someone who was in the upper midcard who could occasionally touch the main event scene and at least be a formidable opponent for the main event. But he definitely fucked himself out of a lot of opportunities. And he didn't have Vince in his front pocket like Shawn did. Sad how is life has come out but the vast majority is his fault sadly
