Elevated style with bold touches + comfort + pockets is definitely where it’s at!

I’ve been following fashion for 50 years and the biggest change I’ve seen over the decades is wearing contrasting pieces, of different levels of formality, in outfits. In my youth, wearing a t-shirt with a silky skirt was unthinkable, it had to be a silky top so that the level of formality in the outfit was consistent. Wearing sneakers with nice trousers was a No-No, as was wearing leather pumps with jeans. Things were just more rigid then. I remember in the 90s, I was the first one to wear a t-shirt (but a nice, dressy brocade one) with my suit, instead of a conventional shirt or blouse, to my corporate office. I was also the first to wear an above-knee skirt, within days others were wearing theirs, too (we all had them, but weren’t sure if we could wear them to the office, but there was no backlash). The one change I don’t like is that now all skirts and dresses are considered formal, for millennia they were just the everyday female garment. I still wear mine almost daily, they’re just so much more comfortable than jeans, which I just can’t get a reasonable fit in (I’ve been trying them for 50 years, too, I just have the wrong shape, more like a column than an hourglass).

Where I live (not America) dresses and skirts are everyday wear for women still and I enjoy that a lot.

I feel the same on skirts!! Im 20 and most women my age dont wear dresses or skirts in day to day life or, if they do, only wear short or super flowy ones. I love me some skirts and am trying to get rid of jeans for the same reason: I hate how they fit.

I love that cream silky skirt on you! You could wear dark tights with your boots/patent skirt…then you won’t feel cut off

Even though I already know most of these, for some reason it's still nice to just hear them together and see different ways you use them 😊

Love the green knit dress, it’s shapely, but classy. At your young age and with your great figure, you should show and enjoy your shape sometimes, it won’t look like that forever (I wish someone had given me this advice when young, I didn’t realize how waist definition disappears around menopause, it happens to everyone). I have a particular love for knit dresses, they are so comfortable and often flattering (except for those boxy ones). I love cotton or rayon knits for summer and cashmere for winter, but unfortunately, 99% of knit dresses for sale are polyester or acrylic, two fibers I can’t wear, or blends with them. I’m always on the lookout for great knit dresses, they’re my favorite at home and to go out, I just add a belt if needed, boots and a blazer.

Nice video. I hate wide necklines, too. I don't want to be adjusting or even wasting time and energy on worrying about bra straps/cleavage and so on.

I’m always taking necklines in at the back, and shortening straps, it’s annoying. I can’t size down a lot because of my bust size, so everything is too big in the shoulders, too wide at the neckline, or too low-cut, or all of the above. Those “mature” brands are the worst, their designers got in stuck in their heads that wide necklines are flattering, but they’re not.🙂

Comfort is first priority. It took at lot of willpower to stop buying synthetics, tight styles, etc. because I would fall in love with a look, but then not wear them enough to justify the purchase, because they were uncomfortable. It is possible to find great style and good quality fabrics, construction and design, but it’s more expensive, so I have to be content with less. I’m discovering that’s not only ok, I think it’s a lot better than having tons of cheaper things.

The skirt and boots 8:56 would look better with some black stockings. It usually does the trick for my darker dresses/skirts and ankle boots fot the night time

It would be perfect with black stockings. I used to hate the idea of stockings but have gotten back into wearing them more often to solve some style dilemmas like this one. Thank you so much for watching and also the idea! I'm planning on doing this more often x

@@DailyHelenJ Tights can be uncomfortable, so if a skirt or dress is long enough, I do wear just stockings (without the pantyhose part), and my regular undies, it’s so much more comfy. I’l, wear thigh-highs or just use knee garters to keep them up. If tights are the only option, like for mini skirts, I’ll wear them also. Like MollyWillems said above, matching tights to skirt and boots is a great trick to look taller, which I need. I have several dark colors like navy and brown in addition to black and wear beige ones, too, with my beige skirts/dresses and boots. They also make skirts and dresses warmer for cold weather, of course. Love your channel, Helen.🙂

I like it how you explore the details, like wardrobe staples, proportion, your mistakes or style progress over the years. It's not what every other style blogger would do, and these considering details is what REALLY important. I mean, we all are more or less aware of the very basic dressing rules (i.e.that black goes well with white, whatever), so your content about subtle details makes much more sense to me.

I loved your point about wardrobe basics! Overtime I found the same in my own wardrobe. I don’t own a single white T or anything crew neck at all, no black blazer etc. Instead, my staples are long sleeve midi/maxi dresses, fitted turtlenecks. Anything short sleeve is a boat neck or halter. The white T definitely used to make me feel not myself.

All my white tees ended up being "lounge at home" wear, because I couldn't keep up with the high maintenance upkeep and they weren't things I wanted until KZbin said it was a basic I HAD to have, I find myself grabbing nude (brown tees) instead whenever I'm shopping. That's my basic, it's so easy to dress and doesn't count as colour because it's my skin tone lol

Forgive me, but I feel you should also consider choosing longer pants sometimes. The wider legged trousers, in particular, would look nicer if they were about 3cm longer in most of your looks, but especially when you're wearing heels. Otherwise, I love all your tips!

I think black/burgundy knee high socks or stockings would fit that awkward leg cut off problem 🤔 (at 8:52)
@kimberlyperrotis8962
@kimberlyperrotis8962 Жыл бұрын
That’s what I would do, too. With the right color tall socks (or stockings or tights), I really like the look of a sock boot ending below the skirt hemline, even though I’m short. Black would probably be easier to find than dark enough burgundy colored socks. I also love knee-high boots with skirts, too, but the sock boots, styled right, are youthful and fun, too.🙂

Excellent sound this week! I thought that was such an important point that you made about staples: feeling good in them and ensuring that they reflect our own style.

I think that you have gone in a good direction with your pants rise lately. There was a time last year when more of your pants looks had very very high pants. I’m familiar with the thirds rule for a waist line, but I think getting to have a silhouette that is 75-80% pants is tipped a bit far. Anyway, I like these more balanced pants looks lately, brava! 🎉💜

It's always so interesting to watch there types of videos! Style is all about experimenting and you always learn as you go~ I've watched all of your videos more than once 🙈 and have tried all of your different style tips, as well as tips from other people, made a lot of "bad choices" and found some good things that work for me and that I'm comfortable with. What you said about staples was very interesting, even tohugh I've heard something similar before, it's still interesting to see your examples 😊 I'd say sometimes my own "staples" are somewhere in-between of what I want them to be (more chic, classic, put-together) and simply a neutral T with a pair of pants, so I'm not quite sure what my "ideal staples" are🤔 I also find that it differs with the seasons - during the summer I really can't be bothered with thinking of outfits to wear so I simply grab some very comfy, light, airy clothes.. 🤷‍♀ Also, a question: What do you wear under your red merio top? I just got the same one as well as some other colours but all my bras (ever "nude" ones) show right through.. I do mind it but I think I'll just pull my hair forward to hide it a bit
@DailyHelenJ
@DailyHelenJ Жыл бұрын
I love the sound of your staples and I agree that summer is just about staying cool. I often don't fuss as much in summer, and instead just reach for linen pieces during the hottest weeks. For the merino top, I have a nude bandeau bra with straps - it's the calvin klein invisible bralette in nude and because it gives good coverage, I really don't mind if a small outline shows through. I also often wear it as a layering piece, so in that case a vest/knit over.

Hi Helen! I really enjoy your content, thank you. Your channel is such a huge source of inspiration 🥰🌷. I was thinking… for the outfit where you feel like the boots are not high enough and the skirt is not long enough and -let’s say- you really really wanted to wear it with boots… maybe wearing opaque dark coloured tights could be an option, I think it could help create the ilusion of continuity.

I was wondering if you ever considered leaving your ankles bare in pants? Also, if you want to wear trainers with trouser pants consider sleeker styles like adidas samba. Something with a low profile and subtle contrast. The tongue doesn't stick out as much. Maybe go for a midrise boot cut jeans. And coordinate belts and shoes and jewelry. Otherwise it looks unfinished.

Hi!! I love your videos! I have a question and I am hoping you could help in this regard. I live in Pacific NW and it Is very rainy here mostly. I have a lot of Puffer & Down Jackets as I find coatsvery heavy and get neck pain when I wear heavy outerwear. But the issue with these puffer jackets is that I cannot style them when I am going out. No matter what I wear, puffer jackets make the outfit look super casual. Any tips on how to look feminine & chic during winters without heavy coats?
@franceshanna3724

Totally agree with you on staples. My staples are also individual to me. This winter it has been wide leg dark denim (both ankle cropped and full length), black ankle boots with a medium to tall heel, button down shirts (especially ditsy Liberty fabrics, striped and linens), blazers (checked and solid black/navy), and long sleeve black fitted merino jumpers. I've always wanted to experiment with a satin midi skirt and jumper look and found one in a heavy satin that didn't pucker at the seams for a bargain (Kmart, would you believe!). I love how you style this look so looking forward to giving it a go.
