For a mature tree right after flowering, for a tree in development (like this tree) I wouldn't care about flowers and early fall is fine. Some more info; www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/gardenia

Is it a tropical tree? But I live in a tropical area but my gardenia does not flower much, it gets full of buds (20,30 buds)but they all fall off before bloom.
@bonsaiempire2 жыл бұрын
Gardenias are sensitive to being moved or touched and changing their location may result in buds falling off. It is best to keep the plant in one good position and move it as little as possible.

Great job and great material. I love gardenias, but I have never been able to grow one. They all die after a few months. I've grown to believe we just don't get along 😢

They need relatively warm temperatures in winter - perhaps that was the problem? Some more info here: www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/gardenia

@@bonsaiempire thanks for the tips! I believe it's the opposite, summers are very hot here in the south of Italy. The ones I've bought in spring (which lasts about a couple of weeks 😥) have never made it to the fall.

Ahh ok - partial shade and plenty water should do it. This plant can definitely thrive in Italy! :)

Can the trunk be thickened while in the pot?
@bonsaiempire2 жыл бұрын
It can, a slightly bigger pot would help if that would be your goal. In this case we'll work towards a smaller container as Im happy with the trunk.

So I've gotten into many discussions about when to pot a tree. So you shaped the plant and I could see keeping it in the training pot until it recovers from the shaping. But why two years? I do not understand that. I would put it into it's pot in a few months since a) nebari is perfect and b) the trunk is nice and thick.
@bonsaiempire2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael! It all depends on what your goals are. We still want to develop the tree (focusing mostly on setting the primary branch structure, and thickening these branches) and to speed that up, I'll stick to this pot for now. But next spring it will be put in a much smaller bonsai container, which will help us for the next stage; finer ramification.
@michaeleber47522 жыл бұрын
@@bonsaiempire Thanks for the reply. In my bonsai group I have one person criticizing my work and saying "no pot" but never answers my question as to why! So maintaining the grow bag for a year will speed up the main branch development and branch structure before ramification. Thanks

Most welcome! Spending a bit more, like on this plant, fast forwarded us a few years (growing the trunk and surface roots takes time and therefore costs money!)

By nursery, do you mean a special bonsai one (hence the nebari and wigglying trunk) or a garden centre which caters to normal people (muggles)

Why do you design a decidious tree like a conifer?
@forkthepork2 жыл бұрын
Fun
@DarthMasiah2 жыл бұрын
technically, gardenia's an evergreen shrub. you can design shrubs to look like any type of tree in the 'art' of 'Japanese bonsai'. i think the gardenia in the video has been styled like a Japanese bonsai tree, not really 'deciduous tree', or 'natural style deciduous tree'.
@bonsaiempire2 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the conifer design, why do you think so? It is a pretty stylistic/japanese design if that is what you mean, not 'naturalistic'. And it is an evergreen - we just defoliated it to be able to style the tree.
@brucedeacon282 жыл бұрын
👍👌🍎🙂
@Gbhmagic2 жыл бұрын
That seems like significantly more than 1/3 of the foliage.
@bonsaiempire2 жыл бұрын
Huh you are right, as we ended up fully defoliating - but the statement is correct regarding how much pruning we did of the finer growth. The tree responded this spring with explosive growth, so we'll have a followup video coming up soon!
