Hey Nigel, Ross from Brampton here. You helped inspire me to get a rain barrel a few back in Jan. Then in March, I was setting up a new aquarium and learned that the water parameters that the Discus fish I wanted were fairly specific. Their natural to the Amazon river and prefer warm soft acidic water. They prefer Ph between 6.40 and 6.80 (my tap water is 7.80) and a KH hardness of less than 50 ppm ( my tap water is about 150 ppm). Usually the answer is a RO water system or adding tons of chemicals to tap water. I tested my rain water and it was almost perfect, give a small amount of understandable bacteria. I now run it into my basement (through a carbon filter), where I use it 50/50 with tap water and a small amount of Ph adjuster. I have an 85 gallon planted Discus tank, that needs two 1/3 water changes each week. It's too bad that we pay so little, we Canadians take fresh water for granted. I like the fact that I'm not using excess chemicals in the tank and only using 1/2 'processed water'. I thought you may be interested in this other use for rainwater. I hope to see you at the RBG Bonsai Show next weekend, I'm a member there as well as Toronto. PS Oh ya. You gave me a LOL moment when you were digging your post holes with crocks and socks. I have two pair myself and occasionally catch myself doing inappropriate things like mowing or seeding the lawn. I'd end up with all sorts of crud in those crocks. I could only imagine what your socks looked like. Ross Fullerton

@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob, yes fresh water is getting very scarce in many parts of the world, we must always use what we have with respect! The socks skipped the laundry and went straight to the garbage, they had lots of holes in them anyway! See you next weekend.

I recently 'discovered' Potentilla here in the UK Margaret. Tiny leaves and amazing bark on the trunk. The only problem I find in the UK with Potentilla is that for every one with a decent trunk there are maybe another twenty or thirty more that just have lots of small shoots stuck in a pot. They're still Potentilla but no where near as attractive as the ones with tree like trunks.

We removed very little root, it was basically just a slip potting. Normally you would repot after the tree greens up from winter, but before the new growth extends.

We just combed out the bottom roots, very few roots were removed or disturbed. It is a bad time to re pot, so we left all the old soil around the roots and basically slip potted the tree.

You may need to buy an indoor grow light setup to keep your trees happy. I would start with a Jade as your first tree, they like the dry air and as long as they get good light, they will grow well indoors.

Many of the Maples are grafted trees where the root stock is different from the top. This is usually done to increase the vigor of the top, or to increase the hardiness of the tree in winter. Grafting gives you a clone of the upper part of the tree, so the desirable characteristics of the parent material are retained.
