I'm a longshoreman and have to wear safety vest and I even alter those to fit my tall lanky frame since they usually come in fat, fatter or fat as F, just bc I'm working doesn't mean I have to look sloppy am I right. Anyways I'm guessing it I wanted to shorten the length and the width, I would start with the length first right and its the same technique for a short sleeve button up?

I don't get it. Create a half-inch fold in the fabric to shorten the sleeve 1" ?
@StylishDTailors3 жыл бұрын
Yes
@Steve-s.w3 жыл бұрын
the fold is half-inch wide so the entire real-estate you're taking from the shirt equals 1 inch
@deemail1003 жыл бұрын
or avoid this whole solution by buying a 1/8" double needle. Trim hem, sew flat on top, guiding as close to the edge as you can...this needle provides a zigzag on the back when you sew STRAIGHT...so the appearance is the same, the stretch is there because of the zigzag on the back and there's no lump of fabric under your hem.
@StylishDTailors3 жыл бұрын
Solid tips, thanks for sharing for everyone!

@grahammckain4492 Жыл бұрын
@@R-Lee- thats how I assumed it should be done before watching this video... Also I'm not sure why it is important to be particular about the distance of the pins from the edge of the sleeve- it doesn't seem to make a difference where you pin it as long as fold is the same width all the way around.

I'm brand new to a sewing machine and really struggled with this. I ruined around 10 cheap shirts from goodwill before I finally got the hang of it, and I almost gave up several times. If, like me, you are a total beginner, here are a few tips: * buy a bunch of the same shirt. instead of the math at the beginning (didn't make any sense to me), just try shortening by 3/4" or 1" or whatever. if you took too little off, increase the amount taken off by doing the whole process again. trial and error is easier than math. * many shirts taper towards the armpit. so if you're taking 1", you won't be able to get the 1" all the way around. in fact, on some of my shirts, at the armpit seam, the amount taken off is 0! I spent wayyyy too long before I realized this. * not letting the shirt bunch up is huge. D mentions this in the video but you really gotta pay attention. * be extraordinarily careful when cutting away the excess at the end, otherwise your work was for nothing (unless you wanna learn how to patch). remember, the excess is hidden from view, so the only person who will ever see your cutting job is you (or whomever does your laundry). it's better to cut away too little than too much, otherwise you'll have a visible hole. best of luck gents, and thank you D for the content.

What's the purpose of having the pins exactly 1/4 inches from the original hem, when you are actually measuring 1/2 inches for the fold? Took a minute to just give up on the math and do it in practice.
