There's kinda two aspects to that. One is the case of tools for a job - the 3D stuff frontloads the work and suits scenes where you can keep using the same assets over and over. It's a waste of effort to make a 3D rig for a character that's going to fly by in under 3 seconds. The reason I'm able to pump out all these short animations super quickly is because I already have the rigs. It lets me do scenes in an hour with a range of motion that would take days to do in 2D. If I was doing say, a chase scene, or something that tours through a bunch of locations like Aspect or Spitfire's Day Off, I'd go with 2D again. The other thing is technology and policy. I do my 2D stuff on Flash CS6, which is over ten years old at this point, and eventually it's going to stop working. I can't afford an Adobe subscription, and even if I could, I don't like being held hostage to the whims of a large corporation when it comes to the tools I use the most. Unfortunately, there is nothing else quite like Flash out there - nothing mimics its specific drawing behaviour. I've been aware of this sword of damocles hanging over my production setup for years. Blender is free, open source, and multiplatform. It just makes sense.
