Please take note of the orchestra here....it's the Cleveland Youth Orchestra...they filmed this entire thing. These are teenage kids playing and singing back there. Can you just imagine being them?......they'll remember that night for the rest of their lives.......just a tremendous thing................STYX is ALWAYS great......they bring it.....saw them first time on the Grand Illusion Tour in about 1978.............last saw them about a mile from where I live about 8 yrs ago.......fantastic band............look into all the songs from this night..........I still get chill bumps watching this....

I've seen Styx six times, the last time I saw them was in 1999, I raised my kids on classic rock and this was always a favorite, when Tommy Shaw told the story of writing this song at Bama Bowl in Montgomery Alabama where he worked at the time. My daughter was going to Huntingdon College in 1999 but had come home to go with me to the concert. She was standing in front of the stage and singing along, he saw this young 18 year old girl singing his old song and his eyes got huge, then he reached down and gave her his guitar pick.

Tommy Shaw is one of my favorite guitarists, singers, songwriters, etc. I've been a Styx fan since the late 70s as a junior high kid. Unfortunately I never got to see them live, weather it was with the original lineup, or their current one. You're lucky in that regard. 👍. Hopefully if they come to my town I can finally scratch that off my list.

You're story tells what kind of man Tommy Shaw is and it brought a tear to my eye. Seems the older I get the more emotional I get. I have never seen styx in concert but I know the words to almost every one of thier songs. My favorites out of many favorites is "Man in the wilderness,, followed by Castle Walls." Tommy shaw wrote "Man in the wilderness"and it really moves me in the way that "More than a feeling" by Boston does which is pretty much my all time favorite song. It is a masterpiece of musicianship, I also love when The drums come in on Castle Walls. When they come in, with headphones on, they sound like they literally go through your head from left to right and back. There just isn't music like this written today or performed with such precision as these great musicians are and have been able to do. I hope styx will be near here soon as I won't miss them especially if they can get over thier disagreement with Dennis DeYoung and do one last tour for all of us fans who would love to see that. Either way I will make it a point to see them if they come close to where I live before they stop touring for good.

Loved your comment about this being a nighttime song. I grew up in a small, rural town on the Illinois River, and there were nights when the moon was full, where it had been warm all day, but the temperature dropped just enough after sundown to form a mist on the river that would spill over onto the River Road. This song is a perfect companion to a drive along that river and through that mist ...among others.

I’m 65 yrs old. I grew up in Chicago on Lowell Avenue and Styx practiced in their garage 3 streets over on Kosner Ave. There was a guy named Henry Kern who built guitars, excellent guitars and moved into a factory to produce them at the end of the street. Everyone went to Sounds Good records and Tapes and I believe they got their start at sounds good.

Real musicians playing real instruments and singing. You can't get this anymore. It's all boy bands, girl bands or singing with dancers. Not saying these people aren't musicians. They just aren't the quality of musicians that the late fifties through the late 70s early 80s produced. These legends are in a category all by themselves.

This song has held a special place in my heart for decades. I first heard it as a teenager, when life was so confusing. It's one of my go-to tunes whenever I want some clarity on something. Tommy Shaw, wrote it before joining Styx in December of 1975. The original recording which was done with his band called "Harvest", had another verse in it. When they re-recorded the track with Styx in 1976, that verse was left out, replaced with keyboards, and gave it a more polished sound. But take a listen to Harvest's original, prior to Styx, it's a very different sound. Edit: Oh and yes, Tommy Shaw's birthday is September 11th, 1953. I was so into him for decades. But he's still my favorite lyricist of all time...

Tommy Shaw(Styx) got together with Jack Blades(Night Ranger), Ted Nugent and Michael Cartellone(current drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, I think) to form the power group Damn Yankees. Their self titled album, and their album, Don't Tread on Me, both rock. "High Enough" was their big hit from the self titled album back in '89. I think they lost a lot of air play recently due to Ted Nugent's conservative political, and life views. He is absolutely furious about what is going on with our Nation.
