Historical Info:
In 1948, Omsk Plant No. 174 was tasked with developing a self-propelled gun that could replace the SU-100 in the army. The vehicle, designated Object 600, was developed on the basis of components and assemblies of the T-54 medium tank. The first prototype was created in 1951. The self-propelled gun SU-122 (aka SU-122-54) passed state tests. In 1954 it was put into service, and the following year mass production began. Despite its good efficiency, protection, firepower, as well as ease of operation and maintenance, the SU-122 was produced for only 3 years. The total production of serial vehicles was 77 units. The main reason for this was the USSR’s course towards the development of anti-tank missile systems.
