I have converted SU HS8 carbs to manual choke so that they operate like SU HS6 carbs. I fit another linkage rod between the front and rear carbs that pulls down both their jets on the choke cycle. This allows me to eliminate the AED unit that would normally sit between the front and rear carbs. I then fit a sliding choke lever on the dashboard, next to the speedo, like on a Jag Mk2 2.4 and 240. There is a kit available that allows you to do this conversion, however I make my own by taking parts from a Rover TC2000 set of carbs and cutting and re-welding the bracket that holds the end of the choke cable. I also have to make a new choke lever with a dog-leg kink in it to fit around the new connecting rod linking the two carbs together that pulls down on the jets. This manual choke conversion allows me to set the jets in just the right place when I starting the engine in very cold weather, and to shut off the choke sooner when engine is up to temperature. There is a video on my channel showing what the manual choke conversion looks like.

Looking forward for the next episode ! Thanks for this very useful video, de-mistifying the job to do on those carburettors. Got 3 on my Jag, it will be much more simple for me with your example !

If you have 3 you probably have an Xk150S or an E-Type. They have SU HD8 instead of the HS8 shown here. There are multiple differences even if the principle is the same.

Looks like a really good job for a benchtop ultrasonic cleaner. These are quite low cost these days and do terrific job on carb parts.

MgTd 1953. Can you work on cleaning the carbs while on the car? I have a slow drip from the bottom adjustment screw ( rich/lean) ?

Love your videos. 59 3.4 mk 1 won’t start. I think the choke is not working I hear no hissing. Could it be the vacuum has a leak ? If so how do I find the leak?

I have to rebuild my SU's from a 71 240Z. I am unable to remove the top of the float chamber. The screws are out but the gasket is holding the top and bottom together. I am apprehensive about "prying" the top off with a screwdriver or other instrument. The gasket has been squeezed hard enough when the top was put on I cannot get a sharper instrument in between the top and bottom. Any suggestions you may have on separating the top and bottom would be appreciated.

Nice Video Adam, maybe you can help me out. I have a Jag S-type 66, with 2 SU HD.6 Carbs. In the middle sits an auxilary starting Carburetter, Afther renewing them and put in some new parts, the gasoline keeps poring out off the starting carburetter and it seems that the carburetter it is connected with does not shut. Any Ideas what might be the problem? I follewed all the instructions from the book. Greetings Arie Zwolle/holland

I have a 1976 XJ4.2 with two SU carbs - but they appear to have a separate auto choke on each carby - different to what your rebuild videos show - can you explain and advise on this? Tim

Hi Adam, it‘s so nice to watch your videos, espacially to the SU Carb ..., but maybe, it would be possible, that anyone could translate it in german, because there are so much really important details, that I‘m afraid, that I don‘t understand all these details in a right way. Thank You and best regards. Gino

Great video Adam, I've started reconditioning my HS8s last night, but the piston is stuck in and did not want to force it out in case I damage it. It soaked overnight in degreaser and wd40 around the piston. Would you recommend "boiling" the body of the carb as others suggest on youtube? Thanks
@LivingWithAClassic4 жыл бұрын
I tried tye trick of boiling to clean them and I didn't find it too helpful. I hope you can get them lose! I'd try lubrication and temperature changes
