My #1 favorite song from Southern this season is, "He Loves Me." That song gives me the chills. I've listened to it probably a dozen times, and it still gives me the chills.

Much props to the new juke arrangers. They are putting new twists on the sound of the band while keeping the tradition. For a long time, people always said Southern only plays with power (still nobody does it better, we see that now how bands have evolved to try). Now the musicality is showcased along with the power. Good stuff Msport. Makes you think about the old days when New Orleans was 70% of the juke bringing that nawlins style of play but there is a variety of students from all parts becoming jukes.

SU has always have had great arrangers!
@hazzaustin55719 жыл бұрын
that is true.. and also have to look how they hire ppl. only former jukes can become directors at SU .. that's wat I noticed where other schools hire other directors/arrangers who didn't March at that institution.
@kvnkreedl9 жыл бұрын
+haz Austin well as far as JSU hiring outsiders goes....that started waaaay back with Professor Willam W. Davis. (SIVID) and Dowell Taylor hired Paul Adams. I mean those SU guys are legends.....so could u blame JSU. But....to JSU defense it dont matter if they hire from outside, cause it has not affected their program in any MAJOR way while those directors or ANY other directors taught there! If anything JSU has gotten away from how they use to be in the...70s,80's, & 90s....because of the size of the band...bigger band,huge lower brass vs not nearly enough upper brass, JSU Directors were not arranging as technical like the old BOOM...but they are coming around on that now though! & JSU has always went though band staff alot over the yrs & still kept they style! JSU do not look like SU or Sound like SU to me...i have never seen it! as far as JSU playing with power now...that kinda started in 98-99...& in 2000 the whole sound structure changed because of the instrumentation , new staff & new arrangers!
@hazzaustin55719 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Reed I agree with you.. I've always thought jsu had good arrangers .. that I myself always SU and JSU in a league of their own. can u honestly say another swac that can handle those two in arrangements? I was talking to my boy that marched at asu and I was telling him I don't get that wow factor in arrangements from other schools like jsu and su
@danielowens34579 жыл бұрын
Southern has definitely been blessed with talented arrangers..but I will say JSU has a lot of good stuff and their arrangements are nice as well. they are two of the best. Me having marched at FAM definitely love Lindsey B. Sargent as well

I would love Southern Directors to write playbook arrangements for the following songs; "Body Talk" by The Deele, "Affair" by Cherrelle, "Oak Tree" by Morris Day, and "Encore" by Cheryl Lynn. All these old school jams are smoking, and would make excellent songs for drilling, and playing in the stands.

+haz Austin yea....i noticed that they only "keep it in the family" as far as future arrangers and directors...i feel thAt does create a real tradition unlike some schools just hire whoever which is why most bands are sounding different from year to year
@hazzaustin55719 жыл бұрын
Eric Hudson that is so true.. Couldnt agree more .. Yet everybody hates the jukes..lol idk why
@Ehricj9 жыл бұрын
Yep....like I only hate them whenever I played against them but that was supposed to happen,I definitely give them the respect tho.....I like what they have been doing forever...I just hate that a lot of bands are trying to play like them now....like if I just closed my eyes and listened to a clip,it would be hard to tell who is who because everyone trying so hard to be SU....YOU CANT LOL

It ia my personal opinion that with the young su band arrangers and directors are better than the older ones because when I go back in su band history like in 2012 and before sound very dirty and trumpets would uneven the balance in band sound. than with them white bells, you could barely hear the bass line. but know they sounds transcends what the previous directors did. I would like people to elaborate on this and share what they believe, for this is my view on southern university arrangers.
