Fun Fact: one of the real life Hijikata's favorite foods was "takuwan" (pickled radish). He especially liked the ones made by his relatives, he liked them so much that his relatives were like "you know what, take as much as you want back with you". This made Hijikata really happy and he took a whole bucket of the stuff back with him, which made the headquarters smell for a while since takuwan has a strong odor to it.

The only thing I’d say is you don’t pickle pickles. Pickles are the result of pickled cucumbers. Usually, if it’s another pickled veggie they’d say pickled *insert veggie* ie pickled okra. Other than that and one spelling error this was perfect. Edit: I’m not trying to be a grammar nazi, it’s not something many people know as majority of people just think picked are pickles, honestly I’m 28 and I barely found out last year. Note: pickling is a long process where you soak a veggie in vinegar and I think there’s something else. People pickle a lot and jar jams in case of an emergency where food is scarce as you don’t need to refrigerate pickled or jammed items. In the 1800s they did this because of that as well. They didn’t have much area for cooling (usually a tiny box in the ground if I remember right with some sort of cold water or ice, I can be never remember exactly, but it was very difficult to keep anything cold so the only thing at most they were able to was meats and even then it was getting it fresh, the shinsengumi didn’t have much money not enough to feed 300 members (at peak) on chicken and other items which were expensive. They’d buy fish and cook it with the rice like in the game, however that wasn’t every night. That was on occasion. Mainly it was rice they ate. A lot of men suffered from malnutrition which led to things like TB and gastrointestinal issues. Okita it is said that he rarely ate and the over exertion of his body lead to it being easier to catch things, with the injury that he received in the Ikedaya Incident causing his lungs to weaken and his body already at its limit he caught TB. So it’s make sense for them to pickle food as they could do that and feed it to the men easily. Doesn’t mean it’s healthy, honestly, how they survived off the food they ate surprises me to this day. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

I am 28 too and learning today that « cornichon » (pickles in french) were originally non-mature cucumbers but now we grow special varieties for pickling and it’s called « cornichon » and not cucumbers. Never too late to learn 😹

@@SaltyNeo I hate to ask but do you know anyone who’s translating reimeiroku? I’m trying to find hijikata’s epilogue for that but can’t find anything for that game anywhere

I know Tokio Fujita translated most or all the Reimeiroku game (i think it was the psp version ?) you can find her livejournal still online. I haven’t looked at it because I have the psp/psvita and switch version and want to discover the game by myself. Maybe I will record gameplays of shinkai Reimeiroku (switch) but I’m not sure about it because game is long. I will maybe do it after Ten’un no shou (next new game) after I’m done with Tsukikage/Ginsei no Shou (so approximately in a hundred years) 😹
