in my own opinion, i prefer dub simply because i can actually understand what people are saying

it depends on the show or anime in my own personal opinion, most shows/animes are way better dubbed because i can understand whats going on and follow each individual detail without having to read but in some cases, the dub isnt very good but when it comes to an anime like one piece, where the dub voice actors not only worked very hard, but were actually really good, its a little upsetting seeing people not watch it especially when its already dubbed. i always wait for the dub of one piece because the subtitles spoil things for me. blows my mind some yall watch the sub for the more "authentic" version meanwhile there is genuinely people whos job it is to make sure you can watch it in your language and understand everything that is happening ngl i just use subs incase i didnt hear what someone said because the sound effects were too loud or the pronunciation was off (or because im just straight up deaf)

This debate is such a stupid and clearly representative microcosm of getting people to read books in their original text: there is definitely some meaning that is lost through translation, and since subbing doesn't remove the original lines it approaches the closest-to-truth translation. Your closing argument is extremely difficult to swallow because of all of this, of course we can diminish all of our entertainment media to just that and as long as it serves that purpose it is "good enough", but in the cases of media that bear high cultural importance this becomes a much more difficult argument to make. I think that recognizing all of this and the conflict it creates is enough to drive people to at least attempt engaging with the media in its original form, which is good.

I definitely understand why subbing is "better." I get that it's the closest to the original. But for me, it's a case by case basis if listening to subs is necessary(most things released in the last 10-15 years, i think, have decent dubs). I do agree that some media need to be watched in the original language i just don't think hurling insults at someone because they won't watch it the same way you do will never be good or work how they want Though I agree people should give the original a listen first before they just try the dubbing(i added it toward the end that they should at least try the original). But yeah, i definitely should have worded the entertainment argument better looking back. It makes it sound like I want everything under the entertainment umbrella to be just that.

Why do I care? Simple, when I want to watch something with someone else and they put it on dub it isn’t as fun for me to watch, like after listening to Toji or Dio in sub (I really like that VA) can you really go to dub(?) I could say the same for a lot of iconic characters that don’t hit the same in dub.

I get if your watching with someone else that you'd care(as you need to enjoy watching the show, I get that). Though I guess as I've said I have a way better opinion on dub than most My problem is when it's someone that you don't know. When people complain to people they don't know online or in real life BTW I do agree that DIO VA does COOK in sub literally a top 2 favorite character in jojos because of his performance

@ I do agree with you, I don’t think people should care is someone else is watching anime in dub or sub unless they’re watching together.

right, lets just mind own own business, and enjoy watching anime however we like

If only it was that simple. . .(it really is though)

Idk I guess sometimes the dub doesn’t do justice to the dub, either because the voice actors aren’t the best fit for the characters or because certain phrases or jokes only make sense in the original language.

Lol I've heard most of the reasons why people don't watch dubs and i understand them(even i watch subs for that reason sometimes). The problem comes when people slander people for watching the Dub or whatever language they want to watch

I originally watched jjba in dub and ima be honest the dub hits kinda different especially for part 1 and 2.

I'm caught up with the jojos anime. Ive seen some clips of part 1 and 2 in English. You just might be right

People who still care about sub or dub are either pretending they still live in the 80s when dubs were actually garbage or just losers. It truly is not that deep 😭😭😭

JJBA, JJK, CSM, AOT all have terrible dubs and ruin the exp of the viewer if not watching in sub. some dubs are better Death note , my hero, steins gate. watching the sub for these does not take away from the exp of the viewer. Bad dubs are bad. Bad subs dont exist.
