SUBMARINER Working Group Meeting 30th of January, 2025:
Monitoring means measuring something continuously to understand changes over time. It is a cornerstone for the blue economy, not only to understand environmental aspects such as impact or remediation effect, which is often the first aspect that comes to mind, but also to understand production efficiency, infrastructure suitability and opportunities for development. Monitoring of different aspects of blue industries play a key role for businesses, as it lays the foundation for supporting green claims and impact assessments.
Monitoring is enabled by technological advancements, and the recent developments of sensors, IoT, eDNA and digital solutions have opened a new arena for monitoring. However, there is a clear need for improved monitoring requirements as there is a general lack of available environmental monitoring data. This is crucial for understanding environmental dynamics, processes and for building models and decision support.
In this session we target all practitioners in the blue economy and invite you to learn from each other's industries for best practices and common challenges, cross disciplines and governance levels. Will first explore different aspects of monitoring, such as frameworks, methods, and needs. We also look at some business cases and markets for monitoring. In the afternoon, we focus on technological aspects and development.
