We wanted more room and my wife fell in love with the new Ascent. We ordered a maxed out touring and are trading in her Outback.

Seeing the Subaru Ascent showcasing the usual Subaru crossover off-road capability and especially the dirt drifting makes me happy for this addition to Subaru's crossover lineup.

It was downsized on the ascent for regular fuel. Sadly my Crosstrek which was designed for regular fuel has started pinging pretty bad without premium and alot of complaints of this online.

Hi CQ, how does this compare to the other competitors like Pilot, highlander and atlas? The drive and the power/torque, and the ride? Will you do a diagonal test on this Ascent? :D Thanks for a great review and video of your experience. Look forward to the other parts!

This vehicle is good, really good. But I wonder will it be able to face the tough competition from the upcoming Hyundai Santa Fe XL and all new 2019-20 Toyota Highlander??

So curious how to see how this CVT holds up in a few years with towing boats and RVs.... Hopefully Subaru did its homework, I'm assuming they did.
@441meatloaf6 жыл бұрын
Subaru is one of the manufacturers that designs and build its own CVT by Fuji Heavy Industries. I'm more sure that Fuji did their R&D than compared to when Nissan had their CVT's....
@kartboarder22g176 жыл бұрын
Sure seems like they are holding up pretty good. I think 2010s were the first vehicles got them and that was the outback, I'm not finding too many failures, mostly oil burning issues. Question is, is the transmission in the Asscent the same in the outback? We haven't seen a CVT in a 4300 Subaru vehicle yet with high towing capability, so that is my only concern and time will tell. I like how Toyota is putting a starting gear in their CVTs, I feel this would be a great solution for towing that Subaru may have to adopt if they start having fall out with the CVT in the asscent and towing.
@haroldbeauchamp3770 Жыл бұрын
@@441meatloaf I see this comment didn’t age well. As we now know, the Ascent was notorious for cvt issues in 2019 and 2020. Also Fuji Heavy Industries works with Jatco to make Subaru cvt’s. So they are essentially the same design as Nissan except the mounting hardware is designed for boxer engines.
@441meatloaf Жыл бұрын
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 The comment aged fine. Ascent never had good reliability ratings since the beginning...but no other subaru models suffered the same as Ascent since outbacks, forestors and crosstreks, wrx cvt, and imprezas all sold well without major reliability problems with their cvt. Outback 2.4T and WRX all used variated designs of the ascent CVT. Ascent was the only vehicle lineup that subaru can never get right.
@441meatloaf Жыл бұрын
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 And your information is old.....Jatco and Fuji only worked together under a joint venture to develop CVTs back in 2003 but since long ago they parted ways. Subaru makes their own CVT since 2014. Nissan owns majority of Jatco.

Couldn't agree more; I can't believe out of the entire car industry, only Toyota Highlander, Subaru Ascent and Rolls Royce Cullinan designed the exterior right; BMW X5, Audi Q7 & Volkswagen Atlas barely get it except the ugly /\ C pillar; everything else are simply ugly crossover. Now the questions remain are whether its mechanical design will still be reliable after a few years; and whether I want my next car to have a non-luxury brand.

Franklyn Villa Yes its way better. Watch the car comparison video. Ascent vs. Pilot
@kartboarder22g176 жыл бұрын
Depends on what your comparing, Pilot has torque vectoring rear, which is awesome offroad, yet Accent has guaranteed excellent traction control and better ground clearance. Personally if I have to buy one today I'm buying the Pilot, because I really don't know what this CVT will do in the Subaru with towing...Hoping for good results but its gonna take reviews and years to get there.

Kartboarder22G Actually, Subaru has the best CVT than any other vehicle that has CVT, Subies never have problems. They fixed everything with the 2018 models and above. Also, ive heard the pilot has transmission problems and the engine bay opens up at driving at high speeds. Dont beileve me? Check carcomplaints.com and select honda then pilot and the year and youll se what Im talking about.

"we're here in Nova Scotia" but yet the license plate clearly says Ontario.....
@CarQuestion6 жыл бұрын
So????? I film in Québec and 80% of my cars are Ontario plated... The main reason: A lot of Car Canadian company got their HQ in Toronto.
@441meatloaf6 жыл бұрын
If you say you film in Quebec and the plate is in Ontario would be more fair than saying you are in Nova Scotia since Quebec is just next to Ontario and you drive across province.....But NS is to the far east of QC, you have to drive through NB then into NS (2.5 day trip for a 14 min video..). Its sounds a little far fetched to review a car that you can do in QC or Ontario, but instead chose NS....Thats like saying im reviewing a plated car in Ontario but purposely drive all the way to west cost of Vancouver in BC just for a 14 min video. I just dont see the logic there nor in terms of testing the vehicle terrain wise since Ontario or QC has enough rocky and mountainous terrain.
@CarQuestion6 жыл бұрын
You know of press event? A manufacturer invite you to test a car before anybody else in a certain part of the country! This week it's the new Forester in Japan! So i'll fly there, just like I flew in NS. When it's on a regular Québec Press Fleet, it's the manufacturer that moves the car from Ontario to Québec for all the journalist to try it.
@441meatloaf6 жыл бұрын
I have heard of press release, but its much different than driving to NS. So why did you pick NS to review the ascent? Any particular special terrain?

Too bad it's got a 4 cylinder engine. I would buy one if it had a 3.6 v6. Not a 2.4 I don't care they put a turbo on it or that they torqued the engine upon this is a 4500 pound vehicle add 8 passengers. Turn on the ac in 90 degree heat. And you will see why you need an engine with real power. Waiting for a bigger engine. This was real dumb. Have an outback which I love. Disappointed

@JediZavv6 жыл бұрын
You gotta be kidding me, the Ascent, Highlander and Cullinan are the only 3 SUV that still look great; there are way too many ugly SUV/crossover out there; seriously, do you know how heartbroken it is to stare at GLE350, X5, Q7, Cayenne and simply can't accept how ugly they are? Replace Ascent's logo with any of those four brands' and I will pay cash right here, right now for one; otherwise, I shall either go crazy and save up for a Cullinan or give up, buy another house and drive a Toyota/Subaru.
