Hey there! Glad you caught this one. Figured you might be interested in it. I was actually just super happy to finally figure out how to disassemble the console LOL. Folks would probably laugh if they knew the behind the scenes. I spent half a day trying to figure out how to disassemble this thing, then reassembled it all before turning on a camera :) Anyway, thanks for watching and have a good one!

Tom, I recently decided to add a 12 V, USB outlet to the rear seat area on the back of the center console. In your video, I noticed you disassembled the entire center console to access the rear of the center console. In my Subaru, same year make and model as you, the rear of the center console has four clips that hold it on to the center console. You only needed to grip it at the bottom near the carpet and give a gentle tug. The whole back of the console comes loose. See attached photo. 3:21

Thanks for this video. A note though, in the 2023 model they've added a relay so that you can't remove the key while you have the shift know trigger in. So the only way to get it to shift with the engine off is to push the button inside the console. I needed to figure out how to get the center console out of my 2023 Crosstrek because it didn't come with a USB or audio port inside the console... Just a blank plate. So I'm going to be installing a USB + USB-C port where the blank plate is. That way I have fast charging capabilities without needing to use the front aux port and having wires everywhere.

Well Tom, your videos have now inspired me to my SECOND mod to the Gray Ghost ('23 Crosstrek Sport). The interior hatchback button release & now this one. In reviewing comments, I can answer the following: yeah, the rear of the center console can be removed simply. But running the wires nice & pretty along existing bundles would be impossible. I used a 1-1/8" drill for the holes. This allowed the plastic nut to secure the cylinders to the 'wall'. Also replaced the screws provided with machine screws & locking nuts for an even more solid finish. Now for the big question...Which fuse socket did you tap into & why?? I was looking for power while the ignition/ACC were off, and chose slot '30'. But I hope the 'accent lights' of the unit won't drain the battery. Cheers Tom & thank you for the great videos. Keep up the great work!!

Great Vid! But, what was the point of the plastic nuts again? If they are meant to hold the sockets in place, then surely you would have to attach them from the back as you first tried. Doesn't enlarging the holes to fit the nut defeat its purpose? Why couldn't you just leave the holes at the first size and just not use the nuts?

@izyb6608

Since you ran the wires before putting the console back in, you could have left the holes smaller and used the outlet ring nut. You just needed to thread the wire through the nut, then hang the wire out the hole, then reach up and thread the ring nuts on (and glue in place). Have done this before.

I am doing something similar as far as wiring up a center console (great minds think alike) except i am putting my power distro set up in it. My plan was to use steel teeth locking nuts to anchor the machine screws, better or worse than nylon nuts in your opinion? Thanks for the content, happy new year! Oh yeah, are you happy with your Midland GMRS, I was considering the different options as well.

My solution was corded lighter plug in the console socket with a triple outlet box double-side taped to the same area you installed your outlet. One socket has USB power and the other two for whatever. Con is no separate fuse. End of your video shows a fire extinguisher mounted back of the front passenger seat headrest. I'd like to know how that was mounted as I can't find a good place for mine...or a bracket. Excellent video. Somewhere you were taught how to communicate. USMC? You do it well.
@TomtheDilettante

Thanks for watching! The fire extinguisher mount isn't anything to be proud of yet. It's literally using the mount that came with the fire extinguisher, some heavy duty zip ties around the rods of the head rest, and some velcro straps. I'm still trying to think of what to fabricate to make this cooler and worthy of actually sharing LOL. Thanks also for the kind words on communication. I learned some in the Marines, and a lot in the professional world. But to be honest, talking to a camera alone is a totally different ballgame. But, it's something I wanted to try and get better at which is one of the various reasons I started a channel. Anyway, thanks and have a good one!

very smart to use a piece of wood to make the hole bigger. I would of come up with some random solution and spend 2 hrs doing that and looking a lot sloppier. also one thing I am confused about is, the fuse tappers. They have space for two fuses. What is the purpose of that? do I need to use both or just one? and when do I use both? I can't seem to find a straight forward answer online.
@TomtheDilettante
@TomtheDilettante 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks and good question on the fuse taps. One slot is for the original circuit and the other slot is for your new circuit. So, for example, I pulled a 7.5 amp accessory fuse, put my tap into that slot, and put the 7.5 amp fuse into the tap's slot meant for the source / original circuit. So, electrically, it's as if you never did anything to the original circuit. I wanted 10 amp service to my power panel so I put a 10 amp fuse into the 2nd slot of the fuse tap (the one meant for the tapped circuit) and viola! 2 circuits :) Hope that makes sense and answers your question. Thanks for watching!

@TomtheDilettante
@TomtheDilettante 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Billy and Cecil, sorry for the delayed reply. The reason the tapper has 2 fuse slots is because 1 is for the fuse you're tapping into (to keep the original fuse and circuit) and the other is for the add-on circuit. So 1 fuse slot becomes 2 circuits (1 original and 1 new). Hope that answers your question.

Hopefully, this isn’t too late for you to reply to… By changing the seven amp fuse to a 10 amp fuse, don’t you risk the wiring by having too much current for what it was originally rated? Also, what accessory is being powered by that line? If that was rated at 7 amp, and is in use, that really only leaves three more amps for your modification, is that accurate? It was a great video.

@TomtheDilettante
@TomtheDilettante 3 жыл бұрын
Ah, sorry for any confusion. Those plastic nuts holding the sockets the faceplate were always going to be used. Question was do I leave them as is or try to sandwich the center console between them and the faceplate as well. That latter option, though doable would have sucked so I just ended up enlarging the holes to use as it should have. If I had done it right from the start, I would have made the holes the right size (larger) from the beginning. Hope that makes sense and answers your question. Thanks for watching!
@Scubroo
@Scubroo 3 жыл бұрын
@@TomtheDilettante, If I understand Elmer's question correctly, he was wondering why not simply leave the nuts off if you weren't going to use them to secure the panel to the console. The reason they need to be left on is that's what keeps the individual sockets attached to the frame of the power panel. Correct?
@jeffrogordo

Just found your videos, great detail. I have a crosstrek and looking to add some other power options. It's great to see how you take all the trim and panels out, I get a little nervous prying on the plastic pieces, something usually cracks or breaks. I've had pretty good success with my new 2020 though, things come apart a lot easier these days. I recently added a front & rear dash cam, was pretty easy. One question/conern with your fuse tap. You said the factory fuse was 7.5 and you put a 10 in for your addition. It's my understanding that the adding fuse needs to be lower than the one already installed. I watched several other videos on adding the fuse tap before I added the dash cam and they all said not to add a higher fuse to a lower amp socket. What's your take on this?
@TomtheDilettante
@TomtheDilettante 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for watching, and good question. I'm not a Subaru mechanic so take my advice with a grain of salt :) From what I could tell, the wire gauges to the back of the fuse block were all similar for the most part, regardless of the fuse in place on a particular circuit. The fuses I tapped were either unoccupied or for seldom used or unused electronics (e.g., I don't have Eyesight), so I personally felt comfortable using a fuse I subjectively judged acceptable for the circuit's combined max load. I'm also conscious of what I plug into various added outlets. The most load I've put on it so far has been to run a 12v Alpicool fridge, and I've so far had no problems. I'm glad you pointed this out though. My official answer, absent actual manufacturer recommendations, would be to err on the side of caution and use a lower fuse if that is concern. Or, if comfortable, test it in a controlled environment before hand :) Hope that helps a little. Thanks again and have a good one!

My 2019 has a socket in the console as well, but I just find it to be inconveniently placed and don't use it much. Having a panel out in the open in the rear I find to be super convenient and I already use it regularly :) Not sure if that answers your question though.

@@TomtheDilettante why not wire up the new socket in parallel to the existing socket nearby?
@TomtheDilettante
@TomtheDilettante 3 жыл бұрын
@@jbinmd Fair question. Two reasons. (1) I wanted a dedicated circuit to this panel so it was independent of any factory circuits (just in casae); and (2) because I felt with too many sockets on a single circuit, I ran the risk of overloading the circuit and blowing out a fuse. This way I have a dedicated 10amp (I think that's what it was) circuit for this aux panel. What you suggest is probably easier and would most likely work well. I have a tendency to over-think / over-engineer / over-complicate things from time to time LOL.

Lol. Well damn. Ah well. At least now I know how to take apart the center console lol! If I figure out how to do what you mention I'll have to film and share that so others don't accidentally waste time like me. Ill give you the credit ;-)

Great mod Tom. I'm surprised you haven't added any Anderson Powerpole connector outlets. They are ubiquitous amongst HAMS. I use them on everything now. 73 de W1SMM Sean

One of my main complaints on the crosstrek, why is there only 1 in this car from factory. Really sucks.

I've got a question about rear vents.....Are there small vents underneath the the front seats that blow towards the back? And if there are, do they work for both Heat and AC? I've tried researching and found conflicting reports. I don't have a crosstrek yet and can't seem to find an answer.

no rear vents or airflow in my 2018 trek.
@mattevans1643
@mattevans1643 3 жыл бұрын
They do not have rear vents. The thing about the crosstrek is that it's not really an SUV or "Crossover" as they market it as. It is an economy car with a lift kit on it. Luxary items will not be found on a crosstrek, because it's just an Imprezza. The only difference is a few mechanical parts to make the lift kit work.

It's a track I got from a subscription based service called "Storyblocks" for content creators. It's entitled "Driving Inspiring Business Electronic" by Velimir Andreev according to the Storyblocks site. I found what seems to be the same audio on this KZbin link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIioeoibnK2ZotU Hope that helps! Glad you liked it :)

Why not just pop that back panel of the center console off? I did that to install mine, way easier than having to get the whole thing apart.
@TomtheDilettante

Honestly? Because I didn't realize that was an option until viewers like yourself mentioned it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ah well, it made the wiring a little easier and I learned to to disassemble the thing. I will have to create a video showing your way though to help others potentially make a better choice than me :-) thanks for watching and chiming in!

Hey Tom, I just finished the mod but I got it to work for a little while and now it is blowing up the 7.5 fuse. Any insight? Also the fuse tap I had to use a file to make it fit in the fuse box outlet. It what just a bit to chunky.
@TomtheDilettante
@TomtheDilettante Жыл бұрын
Hey Anthony, what are you plugging into it? If your device is drawing more than 7.5 amps, then it will blow the fuse. Or, if there's a short in the circuit somewhere, that may be blowing the fuse as well.

@@TomtheDilettante 😬😳 I was plugging an electric car jack (15A). I thought it was the same as the regular 12v in the front of the Crosstrek. I plugged it in the front one with no problems. “Mea culpa” 😅. Thanks brother for the video. It was a well explained and made easy one. I also did the back door button as well. 😎👍🏻🤗

Ended up going with a 1.5" hole saw to accommodate the sockets and the nuts. Don't take my word for it (or make my mistake though)...measure twice, cut once LOL.

People who associate "theft" with "free" are, quite simply, cowards who are bereft of integrity, pride, and humanity. It's a possibility to be sure, but I'm not inclined to second guess every choice I make out of concern for our specie's shit bags :)

@@TomtheDilettante Hope you’re not inferring that I’m a coward. I’m just pointing out the perspective of suspects, with people this day and age. I was in Chicago, and I had my window smashed for a few quarters and an air freshener. I have the exact same vehicle, also the exact same extinguisher. I put mine in the glove compartment for that reason.
