Anyone still looking at this 4 years after posting should know that these have a tendency to need head gasket repairs between 100k-150k miles. The OEM gasket is a single layer with a carbon coating and will fail again, but using the multilayer gasket from the Turbo models should work and fix the issue long term. Plenty of videos about it on here. The failure is initially external (oil seepage) but can eventually worsen to allowing coolant into the wrong places. Checking under the (cool!) radiator cap for signs of oil is supposed to be useful.

Apparently by using the revised coolant version it solves the issue. Switches to blue subie coolant instead of the green one
@AlanMillerFencepost2 ай бұрын
@@Luca-ob4no even if a coolant change could prevent the coating from failing, the vast majority of cars produced with these engines are now years old with tens of thousands of miles on them so the damage is done. A coolant change in a decade-old car isn't going to regenerate the gasket coating.

Great review, I was looking into 3rd gen foresters from a current day perspective. Keep up the good work!
@comickebs7484 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the honest demeanor you have with the Forester, similar to the "Alex on Autos'" approach. It would have been a bonus to discuss the technical aspects of the AWD system (difference from the 2nd gen, torque distribution front-rear depending on transmission, the new addition of VDC). But for someone who loves this "underdog" generation in particular, I found your review to be easy to follow & well thought-through. Well done!

Between this and the 08 Forester you reviewed, did you notice much of a difference in ride quality, body roll in curves, or road noise between the two?
@DrivenCompanion3 жыл бұрын
Its been a while since I tested both so its hard to recall but I don't seem to remember a drastic difference between the two. The Forester is a solid car in many ways but I don't feel like ride quality and road noise is one of those... if that's a main concern for you I'd consider looking at some other alternatives.

In 2011 they got the new FB25 engine with a timing chain, and performance improved a bit. There were no changes to the body that I am aware of other than the grille which went from 4 verticals to 6.
@noventay43 жыл бұрын
And they changed the intake manifold from steel to plastic, not an improvement

@@noventay4 but the timing cover is no longer plastic. Still I must admit I have not read or personally experienced any manifold related issues with my 2011. I really do not feel its an issue.

firstly that is NOT a base model X like you claim in the description. it is an X with optional extras (the alloys are a dead giveaway). also, 2009-2010 models are different to the 2011-2012 models, not just small changes, but substantial changes to the the body and and all-new engine, and even standard tinted windows... and the XT is a separate model altogether, not part of the X model range, the the 8 models of series 3 foresters are thus: X, XS, XS Premium, XT, XT Premium, 2.0D, 2.0D Premium, and the S-Edition. you should know wtf yr talking about before you try to teach others.
