It seems the result is very close ito of how much time for traction control to kick in, but once it does kick in jeep system brakes more aggressively and slows wheels more. Not sure if this will help or hurt if trying to get unstuck. I think it depends on conditions.
@jbrizz99

I think it will be worse because if one side is stopped suddenly then the other side has to start spinning suddenly. If this is too sudden, which I think it might be, it will just break traction and spin instead of moving the vehicle.
@wiciuwiciu2783
@wiciuwiciu2783 Жыл бұрын
It would be worse. Many people do not get, that in tricky situations being gentle is the key. But the system "works", so marketing is done and car is sold. 98% of AWD and 4x4 never ever leave the tarmac so no one knows how bad are those. Best example is starting very fast from stand still. You can very easily break the traction. Or accelerating up the snowy hill. Do it gently and you'll roll. Do it too fast and you'll slip.

I'm impressed how distinctly Jeep balances the torque distribution to "find" the wheel(s) that actually has grip. Electronic differential lock is really functional - it brings the slipping wheel to a full stop in order to have the opposite wheel to push the car. Many cars I have seen on this channel just let the wheels spinning freely, which I can't understand. It's like EDL is only applying light short brakings to the slipping wheel and they are too weak to get the car moving.
@4x4.tests.on.rollers
@4x4.tests.on.rollers 4 жыл бұрын
Full stop of slipping wheel is good only in rock crawling or diagonal obstacle etc. But when you need to run away quickly from a junction or something like that - wheels must spin, you can't stop them. When you are on deep snow etc. - wheels must spin and dig in the ground. And finally - wheels must spin to get the information about traction. If they are stopped - it is impossible to calculate what will happen next.
@wiciuwiciu2783
@wiciuwiciu2783 Жыл бұрын
Also, spinning wheels can clean themselves off mud and snow. If wheels are not spinning, there always will be something inside tyre grove's. So basically you have "slicks". More off-road oriented tyres do not so fast spins to clean themselves (wider and more straight grooves). For jeeps is more common to have some sort of AT's.

My wife wanted a Forester, but I talked her out of it by showing her a TFLCAR video of a 2.5 Subaru with a CVT stuck in a rut with the gas pedal on the floor, with no wheels spinning. I explained to her that yes, the AWD system was working well, but the 2.5 engine barely has enough power to pull itself over a garden hose. She decided on a Jeep, instead.
@4x4.tests.on.rollers

The problem was rather in CVT than in engine itself.
@sking2173
@sking2173 3 жыл бұрын
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers - Do you know what that problem is? It sounds like an engine at WOT up against the converter stall, i.e., the engine and converter are transmitting as much power (torque) as possible to the transmission. Is the engine output somehow diminished? Is the CVT not set to its lowest “gear equivalent”? To me, this problem sure reflects poorly on the Subaru ...

@@sking2173 I don't remember the details. I only remember that there are two versions of CVT, standard and high torque (belt vs chain). One of my viewers explained that somewhere in comments, I will try to find where it was.

Its amazing how long it still takes. All the suspension or various active security systems in the car react hundred, thousand of times per 1 second while this takes forever. Its baffling to me how it seems there was zero progress here in the last decade, theyre just as fast to react as they used to be.
@4x4.tests.on.rollers
@4x4.tests.on.rollers 6 жыл бұрын
ChopStickZero Why do you think they should react faster? Traction control cannot work like diff locker.
@ChopStickZero
@ChopStickZero 6 жыл бұрын
(sorry,its a bit long) think about torque vectoring in mclarens( which is similar prinicple of controling the rotation based on traction), or esps just a decade ago or any suspension system back than compared to now. The computing power is here, the materials are here. Today we have cars that can detect from enironmental factors to surfaces be it texture, material, dips and rises. All, and I mean relative all, all you need here is a proper algoritm combined with surroundings data that would analyse and transfer power faster. There is no need for it to take that long from once you push the pedal to when you begin moving. The moment you push it and the system notices no movement (and this is happening in miliseconds) and slip it should start looking for grip and redirecting torque instead of letting so much slip. If 3 wheels are spinning for 2 seconds why is that necessary? Imagine if ESP worked that slow once you start spinning on the highway. And you can see here that all are programmed to give A LOT of slip before focusing on actual grip. Which is impractical, plus slow and unexperienced drivers start pushing and pulling throttle like you did in older cars to get out of a rut when in newer cars you need to keep it down which makes it take even longer and they remain stuck. I just think theres a lot of room for improvement.

ChopStickZero There is one thing missing - it is not the point to eliminate wheel spin. Three spinning wheels and one with traction is just fun, such situation is extremely rare in real conditions. All wheels spinning - yes, that happens and sometimes it is necessary to keep the car moving. In such case, systems must calculate the optimate amount of wheel spin (some cars have separate modes for such behaviour). Other thing is that these systems react much faster when car is already moving.
@ChopStickZero
@ChopStickZero 6 жыл бұрын
Its irrelevant whether its fun or not. If youre trying to merge from a standstill and only got grip on one tire, fun is the last thing on your mind. Id say accelerating fast enough to merge is without crashing. Its on par with turbo lag, journalists write how "its not noticable" when in fact it takes forever to spool when youre trying to quickly do something. Same situation but no grip problem, it might seem it reacts fast but in those moments these systems are extremely sllow. And also, its not the point just to keep the car moving, the point is efficiency as with all things in engineering. There is no "optimal amount of spin" . The first priority of any vehicle is forward movement. And I dont understand why is would react faster when its moving.
@4x4.tests.on.rollers
@4x4.tests.on.rollers 6 жыл бұрын
ChopStickZero There is no real situation where three wheels have 0% grip and one wheel has 100% grip, so such test is just fun. Wheel spin - smart systems like Subaru or Suzuki are calculating it, even some 2wd systems have modes which keep the wheels spinning. And this keeps the car moving forward in many conditions. Why systems react faster when cars are moving? Cause they already have torque and momentum.

Basically the same. Manual transmissions have in the past gone with a 50x50 torque split front rear whereas cvt transmissions are 60x40 front rear. Since 2014, I think, x-mode is also an option which improves the awd capability in some conditions
