This is a very helpful video..... HOWEVER...I had 12.6 volts at my battery, 12.6 volts on the positive terminal to the starter and 12 volts at the solenoid input when turning the key.... this video concludes that the starter is dead. NOT THE CASE for me... the current was high enough to provide readings to the multimeter but not high enough for the solenoid to click... my current limiting problem was corrosion on the battery cables. Once I cleaned the battery connections... my car fired right up. 2003 Subaru Outback.

Hey Mr.subaru im currently trying to replace the starter on my 2010 subaru impreza 2.5i and I can get all of the bolts and nuts off except for the 14mm nut on the underside of the starter, ive tried offset wrench, regular 3/8ths and 1/4 inch ratchets with deepwell sockets and nothing seems to make it budge, ive also tried a 14mm deepwell strip socket on it and because of the steering knuckle I just cant get enough movement or torque to pop it loose any suggestions I havent thought of? Just a quick question. At some point in my 2005 Forester's life, the motor was swapped from the 2.5 N/A to a JDM 2.0 N/A. My question is: Is the USDM 2.5 N/A starter compatible with the JDM 2.0 N/A motor? The Starter motor went out on the JDM 2.0, and needs replacing.

I believe as long as you get your transmission specific starter you SHOULD be good. The difference between automatic and manual transmissions is the snout. I believe the manual trans have a stubby/shorter nose which would affect fitment if you were to get the wrong one. Other than that, the starters should be interchangeable among the motors except for a few oddball exceptions. But I believe those were the phase 1 cars. I hope this helps 😎👍

I like to replace the wimpy sounding PMGR Subaru starter in my 04 Subaru Forester with a real sounding Ford starter, but it would be too much work. I installed the biggest group size 24 F battery that would fit, and used all custom made 2 gauge battery cables, so the engine starts over faster and sounds less wimpy. I wanted to install a 1,000 CA battery like I did in my 1990 Ford Econoline van, but it would not fit. Looks like there's a place on the passenger side of the engine compartment where I can maybe install a 1,000 CA starting battery. I can make my own battery cables now so I would make all 4/0 ought battery cables for the Forester and everything I own. 1,000 CA battery and all 4/0 ought battery cables might make the engine crank over even faster and sound even less wimpy.

If your EZ30D in the Tribeca is dead or going out, just put it back stock unless you want a very long and drawn out project. It's not a plug and play swap.

Just old man. Spray some penetrating oil on it next time. U can even put a little bit of anti seize on the bokts before reinstalling, there not just going to fall off, obv. Also, taking a wire brush and cleaning the bolts is a grwat idea. Anything i take off of my Subaru, this is like step 1 for me now. Cleaning the bolts lol. I live in north east pa tho, so wvery bokt i touch something is wrong with Mine is also a 2010, so theres that. I bought my car used only like a year ago. N when u look under it, its weird. The entire front half has zero rust on anything, kinda like every part is brand new or something its insane. The rear, not so much lol. I also have found, crc marine corrosion spray to be an absolute miracle worker I say get some if that, u can even spray it on the bolts on something like this when u finish putting it back together to keep the moisture off of it longer Its the absolute only product that dries n actually protects if applied good, for an entire winter. Excellent stuff.

Thanks so much for this wonderful video on replacing this starter. I was able to get the bolt out on top but that 14mm doesn’t want to fit on the bottom nut. Is there a possibility it is a different size? I am using a deep socket. Thanks in advance. John

It may have been replaced.

Great video! Would you recommend using silicone paste on the positive cable?

+Alex Whitney if you wanted, dielectric grease, but normally I don't use anything. I just give them a scrub and clean every oil change.

I cannot get to the bottom nut on my 07 tribeca. Its a nightmare. I'm determined to just keep hitting my starter with a hammer to get it to work rather than getting that nut off. I've tried for hours with no success.
