Subaru at this point can probably handle pain better than just about anyone. Remember he actually has experienced pain that no one is able to live through. He's been beheaded, disemboweled, frozen to death, fallen off cliffs, stabbed and mutilated in more ways than I feel like listing. He's seen everyone and everything he cares about tortured and killed in front of him and faced the harsh reality that no matter what there is no easy way out. Garfiel's punch probably felt more like a tickle by comparison to all that.

One and half seasons, first offensive combat ability for protagonist and it's just a strong punch with extra steps and if I've understood light novel reader comments right, it came with significant sacrifices. And does this series feel slow? Does it lack action? Has the protagonist felt insignificant in the grand scheme of things? No, no and no. And this scene is so damn satisfying even though it is just a magic punch. More series should take after Re:Zero and realize that protagonist doesn't need to be OP or even strong within first 3 episodes. It doesn't destroy the pacing, it doesn't ruin the fantasy. Popularity of this series proves that without any doubt. Just take your time to build up things properly and you don't have to raise stakes so ridiculously high so goddamn fast. This one ability felt more significant power-up than almost any shounen protagonist ability in a while.

Subaru is a unique protagonist. He is not a powerhouse but still manages to solve problems that were unsolved for centuries. Death of white whale, great rabbit, trials of the sanctuary etc and because he learns to get along with other major characters. He grows with every death experience. He started over from zero after a depressing life and is now going places.
