Thank you so much man! My girl friends 2013 crosstrek had this same issue with the key getting stuck. Your solution works and I can’t thank you enough!

I came up with a simple solution this weekend on my wife’s 2015 Impreza after finding out we had missed the extended warranty period. Here is a copy of what I posted on another KZbin video regarding how I fixed my wife’s car. “Great video which helped me fix my wife’s 2015 Impreza yesterday, but I actually figured out the root cause of the problem and a very easy fix. The problem in my case was not internal failure of the switch but rather the mechanical operation of the switch (my switch tested just fine when I was able to activate the switch lever arm directly versus using the shifter shaft to activate it). Turns out what activates the switch is the bottom of the shifter shaft. The bottom of the shifter shaft can wear and or the lever on the micro switch can get slightly bent downward over time and therefore the mechanical motion that activates the switch is no longer adequate. What I wound up doing was bending the lever on the switch slightly upward to improve the downforce on the switch and this has corrected the problem. Another key to the issue was that numerous forward and backward motions of the shift lever would often not correct the issue and that’s because the issue is really an up and down motion issue not a forward and backward motion. Your electrical troubleshooting of the switch is what saved the day for me as I duplicated the measurements and that helped me understand what was going on because without the shifter shaft in place the switch never got “made” and then I realized it was the end of the shifter shaft that actually activated the switch. P.S. you can actually just remove the shifter shaft, and then you can use a flashlight to look straight down the shifter shaft guide tube while in the park position and you can see the lever on the microswitch sitting right below where the shifter shaft sits while in the park position. You can then just insert a long stick down through the shifter shaft to activate the switch while in park position to test if the switch has actually failed or if it's just a mechanical activation issue due to wear of the shifter shaft or permanent bend of the micro switch lever. Just FYI, Don“

I ran into this issue with my 2016 Impreza. There is a TSB for this problem and Subaru is offering to extend the warranty for it. I just received an email directly from Subaru, letting me know that they will cover it until August 2023 (for my particular vehicle). Their email: "I looked up your VIN number, and I can see clearly that your vehicle IS COVERED by the CVT Park Switch Warranty Extension until 8/15/2023, regardless of whether or not you are still under your original warranty. Please make sure your retailer has your correct VIN information, because they should be able to see this on their end and repair your issue at no charge....just reference the CVT Park Switch Warranty Extension. If I can be of any further assistance please let me know!"

Too cool but what a pain. Mine has 27,000 miles. My 2016 Crostrek which is still under Subie's extended warranty runs out end of Oct 2022. It occasionally hangs the key up. I noticed on mine when you turn the key to off, you must push the key in a tad to move the assembly down and then all the way to then remove the key. I was not sure exactly if it was a mechanical or an electrical problem. I removed the clamshell from the column. I tried removing the plug down at the base of the ignition switch. Nothing. Then I removed the upper one where the key light is. It has three wires. Mine didn't kill chime or light. Interesting. But with it unplugged, a cold start gets a surging idle between 1000-1700 rpm. Telling you No! No! No! Put that back. So on mine at least it was just so random and the key felt funny, I sprayed a shot of WD40 in the keyhole. It now has been working like new.

You have effectively described to people how to disable a very important safety feature on their car, the shift interlock. It is not the "key in switch" indicator you are disabling. It is indeed the shift interlock. How many times have you accidentally tried to take your key out without putting the car in park? The key will not turn all the way back and release until you shift into park. Next time you take it on a test drive for mommy, test the key to see if it will release and remove with car still in drive. It will. Mommy will get out of the car and take the key, without the car in park, and it will subsequently roll down a hill over a sandbox full of kids. Some other mommies will be burying their kids. You admit that you did not even enquire at the dealer about the cost of the part. How would you know if it takes 8 months to get the part?

This was not under warranty at the time. There’s been no incidents what so ever. Maybe don’t take life so serious and stop looking at things so negative, life is great if you let it be.

Yeah they sent my wife a letter 2 months after I did this but at the time it wasn’t. I just wanted to try and help someone that got one of these and it wasn’t under warranty. Thanks for letting me and others know they can get it fixed though. Some people may not know

4 months on is it still working fine without the wire connected? I have also had the issue where it will not allow you to put the car in drive. Subaru XV is the biggest pile of crap I ever have bought.

@@rightturngaraget.v.3726 Just did this to mine (2013 / 98K Miles). Only took a minute or two to do, and it is so nice to not have to fight to get my key back. As you mentioned, I think this issue should be a recall against Subaru, as not only does it not give one the key, but it also keeps parts of the car active (accessories) so could be dangerous in certain situations.

Great video, very helpful. You seem like a friendly guy but I really find your beard trimming style distracting lol. Why you trim it so far up on top of your jaw line? Maybe watch a beard video on how to shape a beard lol. But if that’s the way you like it all the power to ya.
