There was a time when if you wanted a 300 horsepower, four-wheel drive car that was still affordable for the everyman, you had only two options: the Subaru Impreza WRX STi or the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.
Now, you can have a Golf or a Focus with as much power and four-wheel drive for more or less the same price, and some now claim that the STi is just a bit past it when compared to new hyper-hatch competitors.
But does the last rally refugee still have that magic? Just before the start of the 2016 Dayinsure Wales Rally GB, we took the STi to the iconic Sweet Lamb Complex in Wales to see whether it’s still worthy of its World Rally eXperience nameplate.

I now have 12,000 km on my 2016 STi and I still LOVE this car! It's got great acceleration, fantastic braking, and phenomenal handling! I would highly recommend the Subaru WRX STi!!!

That's the most accurate report on this car I have seen. The ride gets a bad press but it's definitely better than the M2 I have just owned, and nobody is moaning about its ride. As you say, the STi is a vinyl experience in a digital world and a great drive as a result. On top of that you get a utilitarian vehicle that will go almost anywhere. A good unbiased review, thanks.

If your looking for handling, performance, great looks and a car that makes you smile everytime you drive it then this is the car. I have had my 2017 WRX STI for 3 months now and it's handling and performance is fantastic. In saying that, you are either a Subaru fan or not, if you are you will love driving it.

Friend of mine owns one, I looked in the interior and I wasnt dissapointed. Okay, it wasn't mercedes S class, but I was comfortable and also 2016 version have better screen and backing camera. I have no idea why is everyone complaining about the interior. also try to get 5 adults in Ford focus RS with baggage for weekend in Subaru its possible

My favorite sports car is the Subaru Impreza WRX! This new one looks really cool! It looks so sexy with the muddy tires and a bit of splashed up mud against the side. Thanks for reviewing this

The 2018 interior on these is quite ok, tbh... Quality is great without rattles or shitty assembly and the materials aren't bad either. It has standard soft touch materials for the segment and the leather seats are great. I think that people these days are more concerned by the design of the interior other than quality itself. It's definitely better than a Focus RS' interior and on par with a Type R's one

hothatches r not for real car fans. STi is a living legend with best four wheel drive ever made. Because it's symetrical. No other opponent has this type of drive. + STi is old school cars with minimum computers. We all know that except few JDM cars has now every sportscar more computers than NASA 20 years ago. And this all means STi has no opponent. (And im a big fan of good hothatch) :) Legends like Mx5, Evo, Sti, AE/GT86, Silvias are not for others and numbers, but for driver and for the great feeling :)

If i could afford to buy this, i could afford to run it so mpg would not be an issue i guess. Looks like a good daily use car as well. Although not in the same league, ive had a few abarth 500s, just mentioning because the ride was firm and a bit jiggly in them, and reckon this subaru with being a bigger car would have a decent ride quality.

im really hoping subaru puts a bit more effort into the sti, these past few years it seems like theyve consciously been making the decision to pull away from that side of their business and focus more on suvs and crappy hatchbacks. thats all well and good but there are so many car fans who would love to see an sti with a better engine and better interior and who would be willing to pay golf r money for it dont ignore your fans subaru

x-ricer-x Hit the nail on the head. It looks like Subaru are aiming at a different kind of customer these days, and trying to rid itself of its somewhat chav image with all the dodgy modified specimens out there. The whole range is slowly being upgraded and hopefully this STI will get the same modernisation as the XV, upcoming Forester and the Imprezza hatch. My next car hopefully is a Subaru of some sort but im waiting to see what the new models are like, and hope they are as tough and long lasting as I wish to keep one for a long long time. Waste of money keep trading in. Get one good car and run it for years.

Subaru have been edging away from their original fanbase for the last 12 years but they never seem to listen to what their fans want. Seems they're going the same way peugeot did in the late 90's by making excellent drivers cars to just making boring crap. Hopefully they'll recover in the same way, instead of the usual subaru way of pedaling 20 year old technology as something new.

MotoMack what mods do you have? How often do you launch it? How often do you redline and smash through gears? How often you track it? I do all of the above on my 2014 evo x gsr with no issues.

are you in UK? in case you dont know, most ring land failure happen in America due the poor tune fuel here in UK is much better than US fuel, i aways use 99 octane fuel on my car with can prevent engine knock and you will have much less chance of ringland failure every car have their weakness, Evo X with AYC Pump issues, timing chain problems, Evo 8,9 with 6 speed gearbox problems, transfer case, Golf with DSG made of crystal, and etc...

MotoMack Lol!! Not only am I in the U.S, but my state's highest fuel is 91! Lol. I also have a 2012 mustang gt. I have abused it. I only put Costco gas in that (91) and I have absolutely no issues. I know Subaru and EVOs can be more particular about gas so what you are saying does make sense. But their engines are blowing like crazy. They go really quick after some minor mods!! I'm happy yours is doing well!! Would love me some 99. Once I'm tuned with e85, I'll be good. Except my mpg will be horrible and it is already super bad. Evo x does have AYC pump issues. That's why they have an extended warranty for it. I haven't had this issue yet but many say the clutch is weak as well. I believe it because the tech at my dealership told me some clutches have gone before the buyer made their first payment. Lmao. Oh, having 5 gears (although it is better than the 6 gear tranny) sucks as well. I But as far as modding and engine reliability goes, EVOs are much better. If you prefer better interior and would like more functionality, STIs are better. I love that light blue color on the STIs. Sick!

I think the car is pretty good but it just needs one thing a little bit more low-end torque if it had that people test drove it people would just want to buy the car all over again it wouldn't last in Spanish it's just lacking a little bit of torque

Outdoor Layne True. But it's also less tunable. And it doesn't have the womp womp exhaust note. The Type R is a much more logical choice, the the STi is just more macho. If that's what you are after...
