Subaru WRX TT Attack car smashes Isle of Man TT car lap record

Some raw footage of Mark Higgins driving the Subaru WRX STI TT Attack car during his record breaking lap of the Isle of Man TT circuit. His record is now 128.730 mph average speed; 17 min 35.139 for the 37.73 mile course. A fully edited lap will be available in due course.
The car was specifically developed by Prodrive for this record attempt for the unique challenges it poses on the chassis, engine and aero. The car has a DRS (Drag reduction system) on the rear wing to help increase top speed on the straighter sections where extra downforce and grip is not required. It also has a turbo-charged 2 litre flat four boxer engine which can produce up to 600bhp

Peter Timowreef I disagree partially: I would love to have the raw edit of this video but the editing that was done to this one was elegant and raw in its own way. I love their choice to forgo music in the entire presentation, especially in the brief slow motion portions. And the sound of that beautiful machine coupled with the aerial shots of it whipping around corners was just fantastic. I've actually watched a few really good videos this evening but this one has been my favorite.

Imagine this: you're going full throttle and your turbocharger spins at a very high rpm and produces a high boost pressure. As soon as you lift your foot and the throttle closes, the turbocharger is still spining and producing boost pressure. Now there is pressure coming from the turbocharger and pressure coming back because it can't enter the engine (because of the closed throttle). Normally there would be a diverter valve to get rid of the pressure, but in these high performance cars there isnt. They simply dont want to lose the pressure in the system. The sound that you hear is, when the boost pressure coming back from the engine is trying to make its way back through the centrifugal compressor of the turbocharger. And yes, this is causing harm to the turbocharger. But the turbochargers on these cars are not meant to live very long.

Is not the Waste gate: waste gate is a maximum pressure limiter that prevent the turbocharger to exceed maximum boost pressure. It's mounted in the exaust side of the turbo. On F1 cars, starting this year, the waste gate has a dedicated exaust pipe. What you heard is the Blowoff: it's a valve mounted between compressor and the throttle plate, and prevent the rupture of the intake manifold when the driver release the throttle, and the turbo is still spinning.

Although its being driven at its edge, it looks so composed. I would love it if any motorsports media/journalist company did an in depth article about this car. Although it looks stock, the way the suspension negotiates bumps and watching this beast take corners flat out is an engineering feat!

The current Subaru (Nakajima Aircraft) made the Sakae engine of that Zero fighter. Therefore, the bloodline of engine construction and the spirit of Nakajima are inherited. Tuning is also in Japan. Most of the important parts are made in Japan.

So sad we missed the sound at 2:17 with that drift corner. Sure most of the helicopter shots and in-car mounted cameras had no sound, but +Prodrive already told you guys that it's RAW FOOTAGE in the description, shouldn't you guys just be thankful and read the description?! It's called turbo flutter it's because there's no blow off valve and when the turbo flutters like that it shoves the impeller shaft forward like it's trying to come out of the turbo it's actually a bad thing but since this is a race car and they're going to tear it down who gives a s***

Understandable being a bit of a shoddy edit ,the proper attempt was cancelled after the two fatalities in Sidecar race 2 and the Senior and all the weather hold ups of that day. Feel a bit sorry because of all the money and effort involved from Higgins and the team but it's all relative. RIP to those who were lost, racers and spectators. The island will still be there next year..

The best bikes are just over 133 mph. They are much faster in a straight line (in excess of 200 mph) with a far better power to weight ratio. The Subaru is quicker in the corners.

Nit picking but not "just over 133mph" - current lap record is 133.962mph (Michael Dunlop - s1krr - this year) so pretty much 134. As a "bike person", I'm actually amazed this car did 128.7 - fair play, that's awesome.

The Subaru is an off road car. Single seater cars hold the records on any other circuit. At the Nurburgring the bikes are a minute slower, and that's works riders on factory bikes. But the TT is narrow, more like a long hill climb really. And the bikers there are heros with no room for error!
