Still got Rugby and Cricket from 1960s. Sold Football aling with floodlights and lots of teams in mid teens. Bought it for my son in 1990s just before computer games took over. Also had 5-A-Side Football and Fishing. Fishing was exactly like the real thing - mind numbingly boring. Football worked very well both with simple rules and advanced, especially with original 3D figures which really could spin and turn when flucked right. Rugby failed because more like Football with mad ball, not like passing hand to hand. Cricket failed due to bowling crazy fast full tosses unless you added rules to slow it down. Grew up in Tunbridge Wells where they had a display behind King Charles the Martyr church and before crossing road to Pantiles. Subbuteo based close to Tunbridge Wells. The games work best with printed cloth pitch on quite a thick blanket (like the army blanket in instructions) rather than on hard table.

have the original rules ?

Okay pals but it can be too much like chess if we slow things too much by the blocking moves.

Hi. Do you know the rules for the league version of this? Or where I could get them from?

Rugby League? I don't believe anything official has been produced. I am currently working on something which I hope will help and which will accommodate the 6-tackle rule. Please watch this space or follow the Subbuteo Rugby groups on Facebook.

In the early 1980s, I made up my own rules for Subbuteo rugby league and even went to the trouble of typing them out. I might find them shortly when I clear my parents' house in the next few months. I can remember that my rules were a great improvement, but my mate was much better than me and I never won a match! The only part that I can remember was that an individual figure could have up to 6 successive flicks. This allowed one player to make a long run with the ball. To 'play the ball' after a tackle, the ball was placed on the front of the base and the player was tilted backwards. For a drop goal attempt (or kicking for touch or a tactical kick on the 6th tackle) the ball was placed on the back of the base and the players head was flicked forward with the side of the finger. I also put temporary extensions on top of the posts for conversions as the kicker often kicked the ball much higher than the original posts!
