valuable content for those of us trying to model subD volumes while still running Rhino6 in 2024! >_

Yes, this is really outdated. Now that Rhino 8 is out I do not think there is a large number of people using Rhino 6 for SubD modeling. Many found this useful at the time this video was published but it may create more confusion than anything else at this time.

Hi Thomas ! I cannot access any SUBD commands. The program doesn't accept any SUBD command. I have RHINO 6 Educational ( as You have ) the latest version. Can You help me ?
@ThomasB-12 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am happy to help! As you mentioned the SubD commands are not readily accessible within Rhino 6 (by default there are no buttons or menus with SubD commands). I believe there are only two ways that SubD commands can be accessed in Rhino 6: 1. Type the SubD command in the Command Prompt. This can prove tricky because the command has to be typed free of any typo. Luckily Rhino 6 has this thing called "Aliases" which allows you to add your own Command Prompt shortcuts. In other words if you add your own custom "Aliases" with all of the SubD commands, the Command Prompt will recognize these commands (as if they were any other regular command). The "Aliases" can be found under File > Properties > Aliases. 2. You can create a custom toolbar. Toolbars can allow you to create your own buttons and can really help speed things up. With that in mind, I when ahead and created this new toolbar for you today: www.dropbox.com/s/w9hdbvf5ils5jgk/SubD_Essentials_V6.rui?dl=0 Please let me know if one of these options worked out for you or if you would like additional assistance.

@@ThomasB-1 Hy ! I spent a lot of time to make possible the use of Subdivision commands in my RHINO ( Version 6 (6.35.21222.17002, 2021-08-10)) which seems to be latest . Here is the result: 1. In my version the ALIASES are to find in Rhino>Preferences>Aliases 2. I inserted in the list the following line : Alias - „SubD“ ; Command macro - „SubDivide“ 3. After that I promted in the Command line „Subd“ . The programm recognises the command and subdivides the Mesh according to the given number. 4. By the command „SubDFromMesh“ the program popups a window with the message to type „ToSubd“ for a transformation from Mesh → Subd. It works ! The problems : 1. Is it enough what I inserted in the Alias to recognise the rest of SubD commands ? 2. If not , wich are the other commands ? How should they look like ? 3. For the Toolbar : I dowloaded the two files „Subd_Essentials_V6.rui“ (81 kb) and „Subd.rui“ (135kb) - thank You for both - but neither the one nor the other can I insert in my RHINO. What shell I do ? 4. At Your introductive example how to modify a SOLID, would be the „CageEdit“ command not the better alternative ? 5. Thank You for Your kind and friendly support . Have a nice WE.

Sorry I did understand what you said, what do I download and where? For the Subd commands?
@ThomasB-12 жыл бұрын
You can download a toolbar to make these commands a little more accessible. Here is a link: www.dropbox.com/sh/7yl1vnitcfqz052/AAC91LIdPdnn0wzpJH9Ltacsa?dl=0 I believe the tollbar you would want to import is the one entitled: SubD_Essentials_V6.rui.

Hi! let you know me. how to convert organic object? When I make a solid, it's made like 2D surface. so, I try to check rebuild option. but, possible after explode solid surface. I don't know how to get into rebuild option when it is solid.
@ThomasB-15 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you are trying to convert Surfaces from a Solid Object into a Mesh. This can be complicated depending on how your Solid Object was built. If your Solid Object contains trimmed surfaces the process is a bit complicated and differs depending on how you modeled your Solid. If your model does not contain any trimmed surfaces the process is a bit simpler. That being said, it is currently very difficult (if not impossible) to create a Sub-D that is accurate to a solid. Here is a short video I recorded to go over one possible workflow you can use: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqqci4B6j89ko8U

Hallo thomas can you upload plugin T-spline and Lunchbox for rhino 6 full version?
@ThomasB-1 Жыл бұрын
T-Spline is only available for Rhino 5. You can find Lunchbox for Rhino 6 here: www.food4rhino.com/en/app/lunchbox I hope this is helpful!

What about bridging between faces or modeling with the faces/ edges? a la tsplines...
@ThomasB-15 жыл бұрын
Well to be honest for these features I would use Rhino 5 with T-Splines. T-Splines is definitely the best tool for the job. It's really unfortunate that Autodesk killed this masterpiece of a plugin. On another note, it is also possible to use some of Rhino's mesh modeling tools and convert them to SubD objects. There are also a couple of techniques that I have used in the passed where you can model your four sided and three sided polygons using nurbs surfaces and convert nurbs surfaces to mesh. But once again, in comparison to using T-Splines these modeling methods are really inefficient.

hi! is there an opposite command of subdivide?
@ThomasB-14 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I do not believe there is currently a way to do the opposite of a subdivision. That being said, for relatively simple objects one thing you can do is: select an edge loop and delete it. In Rhino 7, when you delete a SubD edge in the middle of a surface the surface is simplified.

Hello! Is it possible to somehow convert SubD to Mesh?
@ThomasB-15 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can select a SubD and use the ExtractRenderMesh command (using the command prompt). In other words, all you have to do is type in "ExtractRenderMesh" and press Enter.
@jeeyasavani77115 жыл бұрын
Hi! It is weird that a subd object or a subd converted to Nurbs object does not render or take the material like the other nurb objects in the same layer of the same project. I wonder why
@ThomasB-15 жыл бұрын
Yes, in Rhino 6 SubD objects do not always render. I would suggest using Rhino V7 (WIP) if possible. It looks like SubD objects are currently rendering fine in the Work-In-Progress version. The EMap and Zebra are currently working in Rhino V7 (WIP) as well!

11:30 Looks like a sphere but Is not a constant radius sphere.
@ThomasB-15 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a good observation. Creating an accurate Sphere with SubD in Rhino is nearly impossible. For accurate primitives such as a sphere, cylinder, cone, torus, etc... I find that using nurbs is always preferable.
