Khatri and Bania are two distinct castes. They are totally different from each other except that they belong to Hindu religion. Khatris were primarily based in west Punjab and in Doaba and Majha region of east Punjab. Bania caste is primarily based in the Malwa region of east Punjab and in districts which are now in Haryana. So basically in undivided Punjab Khatris dominated business in west punjab and Bania caste dominated business in east Punjab districts.
