Thanks John for taking me with you on that journey. As these steps were more than 10 years ago on my 109 what a magnificent reminder. Cheers, Oliver

I'm glad its helping. Let me know if you have any other questions. I found using a light oil such as transmission oil or mystery oil is a great way to really get a good feel on the kingpins. You have to get to the right torque without it binding. Its a lot of trial and error. Also don't knock over the lock tabs until after a test drive. Then re check the torque. From memory 55 ft lbs. Cheers John 🍻

Very interesting and enjoyed watching the suspension rebuild. Your cradle is a good idea to do this job, and if it has universal uses then a usefull equipment in your shop. I think the spring compression tool listed in the manual is the center rod type, that goes through the hole in the lower control arm and is cupped at the upper control arm, and is pivoted at both ends for lateral movement. The old Fiats springs needed that type of tool. Any threaded rod won't do, it has to be an acme threaded rod that can take all that spring pressure safely.

You are right regarding the compressing tool. I don't have one and I have mixed feelings on the cheap ones that are on the market. I made one myself with studs for all 4 supports instead of the threaded rod as before. It works a lot better. Ideally the central threaded rod should be a finer pitch. All the best Cheers John.

Nice John, amazing how similar they are to a Land Cruiser/LX. This was most likely the genesis of their(Toyota/Lexus) interpretation of front-wheel geometry adjustments, you have so many jigs that are so unique and work like a Keats poem. I feel for you with the honeydew list growing exponentially this fall but have a hunch you have probably seen worse. We are taking COVID shots in Dallas, John stay healthy, and hope the weather stays good for you this fall so you can shrink the list.

Thanks Mark. Been working through the honeydew list. Basically the Wifes car:) amoung other things around the house. One step at at a time;) The jigs have helped with the subframe job. Should be installing very soon, then I can get back to the big job. 😄 🤣 . Stay safe all the best Cheers John 🍻

Good job. Those king pins should last a very long time. A lot of people who buy these older Mercs forget they need regular greasing. My old fintail was no different. It got greased every couple of months, as I drove it a lot, & did the same job you've just done. Yours should be a dream to drive once wheel alignment has been done. You can use moly grease in those, as it has antiwear properties, & is a good lubricant. I use moly grease in my W116 wheel bearings.

Hi Chris. I agree, those grease intervals get over looked all the time. Also those control arm seals degrade and that makes things a whole lot worse. It should feel real nice. Now I have to find someone that do the alignment properly. Moly grease is certainly a good choice. Cheers John.
