Ramu and Raju are friends. Ramu as well as Raju is preparing for exams. And വന്നപ്പോൾ plural ആയി. as well as വന്നെങ്കിലും plural ആവുന്നില്ല. bread and butter (bread & butter) ഒറ്റ noun ആയിട്ടാണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. Hence we say, "Bread and butter" is man's basic need; don't say, "Bread and butter" are...." There are similar nouns like, sum and substance, day and night etc. are used as singulars
