I made some minor tweaks to Perroxotal's design! You can see them on the DeviantArt Pokedex: www.deviantart.com/subjectively5/art/Perroxotal-Pokedex-873210912?ga_submit_new=10%3A1615741422 Hopefully the changes will help make it look a little more "legendary", and convey more the influence from Aztec carvings and paintings. I think I did a poor job explaining the main source of inspiration behind the face of the final design, which is why people are looking for something more true to an actual axolotl. I wanted it to look more like the ancient depictions of Xolotl, hence the somewhat goofy expression. All in all though, I'm super happy with it! It really just *boils* down to opinion at the end of the day. (That's a pun)

I think the main thing is that the body shape conveys a smaller creature. Look into how backs curve on larger creatures, and that should the only tweak needed to make it look imposing. This may take some reposing of the head but please dont change its face! I love it

If you wanted a bit more fire imagery, maybe the final evolution’s red parts could be bioluminescent, you know giving off low levels of light? This would make sense as you said it live in underground lakes where natural light is scarce.

I love these! My only criticism would be how the middle stage should be more of a transition colour, like a pale magenta. It feels a bit stark going from pink to blue in one Evo.

Personally I always forget that Gligar/Gliscor are in fact ground types not poison types. They just look like they would be. Then there's Blacephon who I would've thought was a maybe a fairy type or maybe psychic but I would probably never have guessed fire type the first time I saw it

The fact that its ability is dry skin is also actually really smart because of its 4x resistance to fire while still fitting in very well with the design.

Flame body, water absorb or regenerator make sense to me since it’s a fire type so flame body is an immediate thought water absorb cuz it’s an axolotl it thrives in water and regenerator because aloxotls ca regenerate their limbs

I don’t think the last one feels quite “legendary” enough. I agree with what other people were saying about making the eyes more focused. I also think you should revisit the head shape. I think it looks weird that round. Some kinda snout might help it make look more beastly. Having the long tongue hang out the side could give the pose a lot more movement too. The way you have it now, it doesn’t look like a primary element of the creatures design. The teeth on top of it exemplify the “empty head” kinda look.

I totally agree with this. A snout and a more imposing/intimidating head and chest would definitely bring the "power" of the creature forward. Much like actual Xotol dogs and other dogs with similar anatomies (dobermans, jackals, great danes).

I would love to see your take on the useless then suddenly OH GOD WHAT IS IT?!?!? pokemon. Think magikarp to gyarados or wimpod to golisopod, the underwhelming and even pathetic first form suddenly transitioning to an incredibly powerful and intimidating monster. No idea what the Mazah equivalent would be but I'm sure you'd nail it like this one.

I really love this design, it really taps into that 'I want this to be my friend' vibe you've been talking about in the past, but pseudo-legendaries tap into a slightly different vibe. Its that 'partners with something ancient and powerful', 'a boy and his dragon' moment (which incidentally is why most of them are Dragon types). I would amp up the fire god elements in the final form, perhaps make the design more elaborate or grandiose. Perhaps take stylistic cues from indigenous depictions of Aztec gods? Alternatively, you can amp up the primal, animalistic aspects - make it more bestial or serpentine, something that visually conveys power the way a dragon does.

I feel like it should be a special attacker instead of a physical attacker, and the high special defence makes no sense for this particular pokemon due to its lore of it being fragile. If its dex entry states it can make scolding hot rain, in what form would that be a physical move? In my opinion it should be like a glass cannon of some sorts, like dragapult. And I think it’s signature move would be like flying press with a similar concept to muddy water where two elements converge making its signature move “scolding wave” where its both water and fire type, or sum like that. Idk Edit: or like “Searing Rain” “Flaring Ocean” “Raining Flame” idk, not good at making cool move names Second edit: as seen in the comments below and stuff I do accept that the special defence portion of my statement is incorrect and I am convinced that it’s special defence is properly proportioned (:

I totally agree, stats being off is forgiven tho imo this is an art channel. Theory crafting like this is great fun though and I wish we had more colabs between subjectively and the more theory heavy Pokémon channels. And the idea for the signature move is really cool, tho personally I would try to make it a utility move, maybe rain dance but with a chance to burn the opponent.

Loving the first design, definitely looks like a pseudo legendary starter. However, the second line throws me off. It’s colors seem darker than the final, and it really just doesn’t sit right in terms of colors and looks. It doesn’t incorporate the droopy tongue, the gills, etc. I think the gradient idea of it growing older and changing colors is great, and the final evo looks good too. Maybe the second should be some sort of lighter blue or even that of a purple-pink? The final evo looks good, maybe a little short (it’s legs seem... idk, not proportional to its body?), but you can see it’s a fire type, no need to change that. I like the ear ideas and semi-transparent tones throughout. In conclusion, I think only the second evo needs some changing. It’s colors seem strange, lots of the details gone, and doesn’t share that “axolotl” look. I do like a chihuahua/axolotl, but I really think there is room for improvement. Personally, a lighter color, addition of some “small yet growing gills”, and a more profound tongue would do this Pokémon good.

I agree with all you said. Personally I love the first and third forms, but the second has many issues that make it look a bit out of place. As you said, the color and the tongue sticking out would make great changes (would love to see it with a more purple/pink color as you mentioned), but the thing that stands out the most to me is its head. In this current form it's more of a "bubble head", as if it was attached to a slim neck, sort of leaning too much on the chihuahua side imo, whereas the other forms have that distinctive salamander look where the head is basically a continuation of the body. Maybe this is a matter of the pose, and if it was shown sideways we would see it's neck being more similar to the other forms, but I believe a few minor changes to this concept could sell this a lot more without the need of changing the pose.

I have an idea for another gym leader: How about a fire gym, where the role of gym leader is passed down amongst the men in the family, but the youngest son of the current gym leader was never comfortable with taking over the gym, not because he isn't a good trainer, but because he is scared of fire. not because of any incident with fire that traumatized him or something, no, just an irrationally strong phobia that he was born with. He always emphasized with ghost pokemon tho, and as a kid always played with (insert name of second form of la llorona line here). his parents never approved of this, and eventually he hid his ghost pokemon from them. so much like the ghost gym leader/rival he struggles with his family imagining him ina role that he doesn't belong into. while this deosn't introduce any new themes that the story of our rival doesn't already touch on, i think there could be an interesting narrative threat; the player and the rival arrive at the fire gym and find this character in an argument with his dad, the current gym leader. the rival, who has been in this very situation, emphasizes with him, and enocurages him to speak with his parents, and after learning about his affinity with ghost pokemon and expertise in batteling, suggests he should become the new ghost gym leader. now, since this is a pokemon game, you'd probably convince the parents through battling, but i think that our rivals grandmother, who is currently the ghost gym leader untill a new one is found, is very accepting of this change, since after the incident with her granddaughter, she has thought a lot about traditions and how and when we should follow them. idk, i just thought this would make sense, and act more as closure to our rivals story, as to show how she has grown so comfortable in her newfound role, that she can now help other people, and it goes full circle, with that newfound role she helps another person find, being the very open gym leader position she left behind.

Hi I'm early! I have a pokemon idea! I think Mexico should have an armadillo pokemon! The shell could be converted into a pyramid of a mezoamerican temple pyramid, as the ruins get larger through evolution! Plus the final stage could look like a doedicarus, a prehistoric creature native to the eocene americas, with a club tail. This tail could even be based off a maraca for extra Mexican inspiration. Love this line though! Hope you're enjoying life subjectively! :)

I really like the design and I think that it needs no more fire imagery to be a fire type. However the final form's proportions don't give off the idea that it is some large fire deity-esque beast, they make me think that it is like cat sized. Looking at the art for the other pseudos they seem to make them seem large by giving them physiques that aren't squonched together and the faces take up smaller portions of the overall body compared to the pre-evolutions. For example, gible, bagon, goomy and jangmo-o's all have big heads/faces in comparison to the rest of their bodies and from the face to body ratio we then assume that these are all little guys. looking at kommo-o, salamance, garchomp and hydreigon their head take up much less space of their overall design and while we are still drawn to their faces instinctually we focus on the rest of the body much more. Dragapult and metagross don't follow this rule as much, their heads/faces take up alot of their form, but they show their size in a different way. We can see how dragapults size is far greater than dreepy because we can see them next to each other in dragapult design. Metagrosses art works show intricacy but more noticeably depth. It is usually shown face on with a large pair of legs approching and the other legs behind it shadowed and smaller to show tha they are quite a bit further back because of how large metagross is. So then looking back at perroxotal, its rather large head and blobby form make it seem like it is far smaller compared to the likes of other pseudos. I think that if it was a bit lankier in proportions it would give off the presence of a large beast more, so that would mean the head being smaller (making the neck seem longer), extending its limbs a tad more and making the tail longer. It also doesn't look like it could do much physical damage - the legs are short with round paws, the tail is thin and the teeth are blunted and blocked by a large soft tongue. I don't know how you could go about it but I think you should make it look more physically imposing because even the pseudos who aren't outright intimidating look quite heavy. Edit - I also think the facial expression is very animalistic and goofy. Quite a few of the pseudos wear smiles on their faces but they at least feel somewhat intelligent and emotive in their expression, they look like they could be quite smart. But perroxotal has a very bestial face and more specifically eyes that emulate that of amphibians and similarly to amphibians' eyes it looks like a single braincell is bouncing around behind them like the dvd screensaver.

I agree, it's very cool that you noticed the size ratio of the heads based on the stage of the evolutionary line! I hadn't noticed! As for the final design, maybe it needs less rounded shapes and more sharp ones? I like the flow the design has, but the face is basically all circles and rounded shapes, which doesn't help to imply final form/pseudo legendary/dangerous (of course, there are exceptions in canon too, goodra is very rounded...)

Nice critiques, I've been seeing the lack of imposing presence and silhouette in a lot of the comments and I'm not a fan of the last 2 stages. The colors and flame patterned gills are good m, but the final form could use more distinction in its flaring gills from stage 2, and maybe take some design ques from Samorutt when it comes to being a bulky and imposing quadraped since he has that psuedo legendary look to him.

I agree with this critique the most. The proportions definitely feel the most imposing thing about all of the pseudo legendary pokemon. Along with that I noticed most pseudos have exaggerated parts of their bodies that go along with how they attack- i.e. kommo-o has a large amount of scales to emphasize how it utilizes its scales in combat, Dragonite's torso is exaggerated cause it previously evolution lines and it knows a variety of slamming moves, Garchomp and it's scythes, and heck you can even argue Goodra's non physically imposing form hints at it being better as a special attacker. It's really well done! But it may need more visual cues for how it may defend itself. I'm open to the idea of a fire type not having the usual making to be a fire type, but I feel the wrong characteristics were exaggerated.

Feels more like a starters to me. The first stage is super cute, has an awkward teen phase and the final form looks strong but not pseudo legendary strong, at least for me.

This whole line looks great! I do have a couple suggestions for the final evolution tho. 1. Slightly elongate it’s body and tail (kinda like a dragon) 2. Make the colors more saturated so that it differs from the middle evolution. Similar to Drakloak and Dragapult. Maybe bring back the color pink to reference it’s first stage. Bonus: I like the eyes but feel like they can pop more. Maybe a different color for the pupil or the ear/gills.

In my opinion, a Pokemon's design deviating from its type should not only be allowed, but encouraged. Many of my favorite Pokemon designs break away from the conventions of their typing: Mawile and Mimikyu aren't super cute or pink; Grapploct, Nihilego, Dhelmise, Eelektross, and Cursola all take inspiration from the ocean, but don't need the water type; and even more subtle stuff like Lycanroc being a rock type without being made of rocks is really cool. I think the typing should always come after the design.

I think the most important thing about a Pokémon design to me is the way the typing is used. For example, the Poison type is utilised in many different ways: venomous creatures, pheromones, noise or even pollution. If the typing is only apparent through some lighting bolt markings on the head, then I would rather consider the design as unsatisfying.

I kind of consider the sound element in Toxtricity's design to be attributed to the electric type, as its design is inspired by electric instruments- but your point still stands as the sound concept is an interesting subversion of the electric typing

How about a fire type gym leader, possibly inspired by flamenco dancers? Maybe she's the *opposite* of the Ghost Type Gym Leader, where she finds it an honor to take part in the tradition and is glad to be a gym leader. Her team could possibly be a Xolsmol, a Growlithe (Give old pokemon love too), and maybe Techuppi. (It's not a fire type, but gym leaders have had multiple pokemon who aren't their types, but do kinda look like them.) Her appearance would be that her face does look slightly similar to the Ghost Type Gym Leader, and she would have a dress that on the bottom, would have fire patterns below. She would a fire necklace and also... It wouldn't be a gym without puzzles, right? You would first have to memorize what moves the flamenco dancers did, then press a button that tells a certain move. Once you complete it 2 times, you would head on to the gym leader. I can't really think of a "good" name, so I'm just going to say "Flaressa." She and the Ghost Type Gym Leader would be friends. Flaressa takes her job seriously, and will try to keep up the tradition, no matter what. She wouldn't give up the gym at all. She would only quit for tradition, for her siblings and cousins to end up being like her. She adores tradition and supports it completely. I want this because it contrasts with the Ghost Type Gym Leader's feelings, where she doesn't want to be the gym leader. Hopefully you maybe will take this into consideration, you could change many things if you want, or not use it at all, I really just want you to see this.

What if instead it was like, a Fighting Type Version exclusive Rival Thats the Counterpart to the Ghost, He still likes Tradition but hes also Very serious about it, Often Showing a Intimidating but Valorant Personality (Like Cobbalion) and makes sense, since Ghost and Fighting are Immune to each Other and also would be Kinda Cool if He had a Jang-Mo'o as his ace or something like that.

The first design was great! I felt there was a nice balance between the axolotl and canine. The two final forms however seem more canine. I liked the second form, it felt very much like a second evolution. It may be my desire to see more axolotl that i think adding more of the gills would help it. The final form is where i'm left wanting more. It still for some reason feels more like second form. It doesn't feel grandiose enough for a pseudo legendary, nor axolotl. The gills are a must (in my opinion), it's almost like its species trademark ya know. Making the ears more amphibian like would help or touching up the paws such as making them bigger and longer with a more amphibian look would be awesome to balance dog and axolotl.

I think, that the tongue out in the third stage is ok, but combined with the unfocused eyes it kinda gives a "stupid" vibe. IIt's the face that looks stupid, not the pokemon or the concept itself, it just feels super goofy to me and i thought that as a pseudo legendary pokemon, and following the cute but tough look, it should have a more focused eyes or smt like that.

In my pokemon region I made my Sudo Legendary thats designed after a Axelotle, but mostly for the first form, which is pure ground type and is found in caves. The second form is a water-ground type and live in underground rivers and streams. It lost its back legs for the purpose of swimming faster, as now it is a purely aqautic creature. Its third and final form is a water-dragon type and lives in teh deepest depths of the ocean, and are most common but still rare is sea floor canyons. They are very mysterious and powerful, but have no legs because they gave them up for the purpose of moving fast underwater. The full evolved form has the swift swim ability, and the hidden ability of Hidden power, so when they are on low yellow health or red health theyre attack power is increased by double.

Hey! thought of sharing an idea.. the legendary pokemon can have a 2 forms.. one with an Oaxaca print (used in many Mexican carvings.. )the legi may change into this from during "Día de los Muertos" (the day of the dead) and also would be interesting if there was another legi which has close relation to this one! :)) LOVED THE DESIGN OF THE Pseudo-Legendarie!!!

the design is good, but it doesn't feel like a pseudo legendary (in my opinion). Dragonite, Goodra etc. while being cute do look big and imposing. I don't think this final evolution has that imposing silhouette, it doesn't look like something that would strike a little fear in you in you saw it in a dark underground lake. the middle evolution also looks out of place. My suggestion either making the final stage a bit bulkier or better yet longer and more slender with more fantastic "dog-ear" gills because the gills of the second and third stage look too similar. Another direction you could go with the color scheme is darker blues/ greys with glowing red gills and fins to make it depict underwater volcanoes and hence maybe make the pendant on it's "collar" obsidian. I think the tongue think is great and the overall concept is also pretty great.

Agreed, I feel the the 1st form to 2nd form is way to similar, it just looks the same. I say keep the 1st form, scrap the 2nd form and make the original 3rd form the 2nd. And give it a more imposing 3rd form.

as someone who has owned and raised 2 axolotls i was so exited to see what you created, I loved the fist iteration of the Pokémon but the other two just felt a little forced, a few things that might help, axolotls don't actually use their tongues and some don't even have them, they inhale anything in front of them, like a snorlax or guzlord, as you mentioned they don't grow into full salamanders so maybe making them a 2 step evolution would make more sense as they only change twice, Xolotl was good but you could also draw inspiration from the god Quetzalcoatl, xolotls sibling, they where based on life and resurrection which could draw from the axolotls amazing regenerative ability.

For me I like it when the fire is at least semi-easily read from the design, seeing as fire isn’t something that can really be hidden. It’s obvious in sight and smell plus wherever it is you can feel the heat. It’s cool when that’s reflected in the design in some way, like when it looks like something is glowing red from the inside or has flame imagery or smoke on it. The fact that I’m terrible at reading subtle symbolism may alsoooooo have a role in it I really like the designs! Generally it gives off the right vibe, but the red bits could use a little more glow to give off those fire vibes. It’d look especially cool on the gill slits of the final evolution.

I really like this one: I think you actually conveyed a lot of art motifs and design trends you see in Aztec monumental sculptures of Dog, Jaguar, and Snake heads pretty well here, and while you seemed wary on the typing, it actually works really well: The duality between Water and Fire in Aztec culture was seen as a epithet for the concept of, as seen in some poetry, the dual shrines at the top of the Templo Mayor being devoted to Tlaloc and Hutzlipotchli (though there's some caveats here), and the Water-fire stream motif seen on some examples of Aztec art (which may be the true origin of Mexico's flag emblem: There's no eagles holding snakes in Aztec art, but there ARE eagles with Water-Fire streams coming out of their mouths, which look like serpents!) . Maybe you could have leaned into that idea bit more by making it a cross between an Axolotl and a Xiuhcoatl (mythical fire-lightening snakes in Aztec cosmology, and who are used as the gylphic representation of fire in the water-fire iconography), but as Is I think the line's fun and cool. My only criticism would be the dex entries mentioning Cenotes: Axolotl's are exclusively found in the lakes in the Valley of Mexico, where the core cities of the Aztec Empire used to be and where Mexico City is today, with bits of lake Xochimilco and Chalco left, still with Aztec-era canals. Cenotes on the other hand are found like a thousand kilometers away around the Yucatan Penisula, where the Maya and some lesser known civilizations like the Mixe and Lenca are located at. Xolotl also really isn't the "god of fire", that's more Xiuhtecuhtli or Huehueteotl, but it's a little complicated and that's not a huge deal.

This is really creative. I think color-wise this is completely fine for a Water/Fire type. It doesn't feel out of place. My only two notes for this design would be that I feel like you could've gone crazier with the gill/ear thingy, and created a truly majestic "mane" almost, because that would give it a more deific look (at least in the sense of rpgs and anime designs) and a more layered and flaring, long mane would've given it a more fiery appearance without adding actual fire to the physiology. Subjectively-speaking, I think the final form's face is a bit goofy, I think I would've preferred more canine-features and a slightly elongated head and different eyes, but that's just my taste. I feel like it misses the mark of other pseudo-legendary mons' ferociousness due to the derpy face, but it also doesn't quite feel as whimsically mythical as Dragonite or Goodra, but that's really just my personal taste.

Signature move idea for perroxotal Venting Downpour A strong physical water move that attacks all other pokemon (including allies) in the battle similar to surf that not only also acts as a fire type move it heals the user a bit at the cost of lowering physical attack stat and only having max 8pp. It doesn’t make physical contact.

Easy way to make it look fire type. If the gills flicker and sway. The swaying is probably obvious and is easily explained in lore. The flicker could be a yellow / blood red gradient flicker that could be explained as a way for the Pokémon to light of murky water when looking for food. Hope you like the idea

I saw the minor tweaks, and I think the changes suit it a lot better. One idea that came to mind to help push the idea of "fire type" is maybe making the tail fins look a bit torn as to resemble flames. It doesn't have to be on fire, but just a few wispy tears could help further push the fire type without needing to actually incorporate flame. Either way I already want 10 of them. The more videos you make on this, the more I want an actual game of this region

I love the silhouettes of each of these- and I think the color palette transition is graceful. I like the idea of an unconventionally designed fire-type Pokémon, and appreciate the “scald” reference to justify the dual-typing. The only inconsistency I see in the video is the pupil shape of the final form, but I may just be ignorant to the biology of a mature Axolotl as opposed to their younger stages of life. Really enjoying this series and while I enjoy your prism-style art, this is a delightful divergence into a different side of your work. Cheers!

In my opinion, as long as the Pokémon’s type isn’t being actively contradicted by its’ design then it should be fine An example would be a Pokémon that looks like a living hunk of ice that starts shooting flames the second the fight starts. I can get behind less obvious design, but if its’ design is basically lying to me, that’s when you start losing me. In reference to your design, as a player, I would say that it’s red/yellow coloration is a big enough clue for most people to assume its’ got some fire typing going on.

I had this cool idea for a rock type pokemon themed around a Capybara. It would be a two stage Pokémon that acted a bit like a better Metapod. High defense and a lower attack. I think I fall somewhere in-between. The gills and wavy tail do imply flames, but I think that you can totally play it a bit loose when it comes to specific ways of representing a Pokémon's type(s) with physical characteristics. I will reiterate though, I do really like the way that the ideas of water and fire are both implied here. Keep up the great work!

I think something super important to think about when designing these pokemon, is Pokemons evolving art style. Tbh I really enjoy the thought put into each pokemon design. My problem with some of them is also apparent in the last two stages of this pokemon. I want to see some sharper lines, harsher looks, more complex designs. Now I also carry the feeling that pokemon designs, in general, are getting too complicated, but it really is a fine line to balance. I favorite pokemon design so far is the ground fairy type, cause it balances so well. I think that idea needs to be carried over to some of the designs/ the more important designs, such as Starters, Pseudos, fossil. In conclusion, I love the designs, i just think that they can be pushed a little further

The reason so many fire Pokémon are literally on fire is that that’s what Pokémon types are: a description of the Pokémon’s body. Fire-types are partially made of fire or otherwise have fire-like properties to their bodies. Fire-type doesn’t mean “can use fire magic”, lots of Pokémon of various types can do that.

THIS IS ADORABLE!! Love the tweaks you made to the last one in the line, I think you really fleshed it out well! I would perhaps suggest putting fire on the tail, or at least making the tail able to erupt into flames (think like Typhlosion's neck fur) - it might make him a bit more balanced design-wise, as he feels a tad "top heavy" to me and looks a bit similar to the second stage due to the colors. Not really sure though. I LOVE that first stage, genuinely feels like a real pokemon and you have amazing concepts in all three. I'm stunned by how well these came out. A perfect idea for bird pokemon for this region is one based on Royal flycatcher! It can look both majestic and funny depending on which way you choose. And it lives in Mexico too.

I think this design is really great, but I’m not sure about it being the pseudo legendary of the region. The pseudo legendary is a super rare and hard to find pokemon, with them being dragons, supercomputer spider tanks, or godzilla. But this line draws a lot of design cues from dogs, who are very common creatures.

@Youssef Taboudoucht yes but this Pokemon fits more of a starter than a pseudo legendary all of the pseudo legendarys have a big final evo. The start is good but it’s too small by the end.

I like how how the gills look like flames instead of being flames themselves. No, I don’t think you need to set all fire type Pokémon on fire. I honestly think the type should be treated more a writing prompts instead of literal elements. It can lead to more imaginative ideas then. (Not sure how I feel about how the colors on the first stage are so different through it makes it feel like I belongs to another line, but besides that it looks great.) I personally would lean more into the body temperature regulation aspect of the design that a really great and creative idea.

Love these designs!! One tip I have is that the back legs of Amphibark look a little too different to Xolsmoll. Maybe make some amphibian toes on them so that it seems a little more like the transition between the 1st and 3rd stage?

It looks really good as a water fire type. Since the blue is kind of dull it also looks like ash so mixed with the red of the gills ends up looking great. Also keeping the fire typing as secondary is also key since that's the one you can just imply instead of convey. :)

Someone else probably corrected you already but legendaries such as Kyogre, Dialga, Reshiram etc. have a base stat total of 670 or 680, legendaries like Celebi or Deoxys share the 600 with pseudos

I would have made the last one (Perroxotal) more cute strong like dragonite one of those though but adorable buddies so a bigger and more cute design would be nice for this mon if you ask me

I think typing having a heavy influence on the design is sort of fundamental to the genre, and especially with pokemon in particular. I say that because the way in which you might typically think of a particular animal or design doesn't always necessarily fit the actual typing of the animal in question, much like your own. Though with your design being a hybrid fire/water, it is far harder to make that distinction. With your design in particular, maybe the little collar dew drop shape could be slightly more vaguely flame shaped? Perhaps the gills themselves could look a tad more wispy like a flame? There are lots of ways in which you can keep a sort of aesthetic motif without explicitly having fire all over the place.
