Totally loving the beach sessions, such a nice change of pace. I'd love to see this as a regular fixture every now and then even when you get your usual space back! PS - I'd suggest trying a lavalier to record the commentaries, it'll probably improve the voice to wave noise ratio (although the wave sounds are definitely part of the charm of the setting 😄)

The style of this song is called rocksteady, which is a half time version of ska. One of the most interesting things about Sublime is how they mix different genres and styles. Not just Jamaican music like reggae, ska, and dub, but punk and hardcore and hip-hop. Also a mix of party atmosphere and dark and sometimes painful lyrics. Songs like “Seed,” “Same In The End,” and “All You Need” show their range.

Sublime and the beach go hand-in-hand... Are Sublime Reggae? Yes. Are they Ska? Yes. Are they also punk, hardcore, alternative, and rock with little bits of hip-hop, surf music and even Spanish elements thrown in? Yes! Would Jamaicans consider them Reggae? Probably not... Sublime was a pure American blend of all these influences thrown together - something that only the 90s era could deliver... Bradley will always be missed - it would have been amazing to see where his career could have gone... For the next suggestions (there are a bunch) maybe try Paddle Out (very short surf song) or even Saw Red featuring a very young and fairly unknown at the time Gwen Stefani (Edit: in the very early 'No Doubt' days) ...

You gotta listen to more ska! I found your channel because of a Less Than Jake reaction…and I stuck around because I love your take on the music. And ska has sooo much to offer. Funky bass lines, awesome horns (usually), and just a fun, upbeat sound, no matter what the subject matter is. Lol! I would suggest the song Wood and Water, by the Skatalites…because it’s one of my all time favs, and the Skatalites were a huge part of the creation of ska in the early 60’s (and still play today).
@py_a_thon2 жыл бұрын
In terms of ska...I always think of big band as opposed to upbeat reggae grooves. Streetlight Manifesto is one of my favorite bands(for real...that band is so tight and so complex). And of course LessThanJake and ReelBigFish. I'll listen to your recomendation though. The name is familiar yet I am not sure I have heard the music within the last decade.
@gregclarke21832 жыл бұрын
@@py_a_thon Streetlight say that they’re brass punk, and not ska. Though Catch 22 is ska. Lol! The Skatalites are more like the big band style you mentioned. But I put any reggae, rocksteady, etc. under the “ska umbrella”, like metal and grunge, etc. are under the “rock umbrella”. Though I’m no musical historian. Lol! I would also highly suggest listening to the Planet Smashers, the Slackers, the Pietasters, the Toasters, Bim Skala Bim, Los Tres Puntos, and I’ll stop there because there are so many great ska bands!!!
@py_a_thon2 жыл бұрын

Great review, you nailed it with the description of his voice. A perfect blend of head/chest voice, with raspy texture. I'm releasing a documentary on Sublime in early 2023. Bradley Nowell was one of the few greats who had a proven IQ on paper of 142 even by age 12. He was a Genius.

@TheMrgrieves09142 жыл бұрын
I think, other than Bradley Nowell's voice, the reason Sublime has such staying power is that they blended so many genres, and made such a unique sound. Someone might come up with a better description, but I'd call Santeria reggae/rock. Sublime effortlessly slides from reggae, to Ska, to rock, to punk rock, to rap, and possibly even more. Sublime is an absolute treasure of the 90's era, and like many bands from that time, it ended too soon. I believe this band, Brad, and even the other members of the band, had that certain creative spark that could have burned for so much longer.
@Funktaro5 Жыл бұрын
Their last album was by far their best. It's really one of the great tragedies of music because they were really just starting their peak. Most great musicians even if they die young do so a bit passed their peak, but Sublime was just getting there, if not still getting better.

I came here to recommend the ultimate Sublime song; but frankly they're so consistent that it's impossible. They're always hitting their mark and every song brings its own vibe. The fact is Sublime is reggae-punk. It's a reggae foundation as told through a punk rocker and history has shown that it's a hit. I think "Greatest Hits" is a great representation of their sound and worth checking out. But again, this is the type of band you roast a bone to and spin the whole record. So many songs that hit so many points. They can simultaneously be understood in one song and not be understood without listening to their entire discography. Luckily, listening to their entire discography is easy and a pleasure.

Lyrics-wise, the term "Sancho" is slang for the guy who takes your girl while you're in prison. The term evolved to just mean the side man, sans prison. Heina means your beautiful girl. So his girl's been fucking around, he has a hard time defining how he is feels about it, but for sure he wants to mess up the other guy.
