I had a sore throat while recording this, sorry if my voice is a bit scratchy!
In this series, I attempt to beat Subnautica while following a near-insane set of restrictions designed to make the game unfairly difficult.
Full rule set:
Rule 1 (100%): Must unlock all achievements, blueprints, and databank entries
Rule 2 (Glitchless): Cannot use bugs or unintended behavior
Rule 3 (Hardcore): Hardcore mode. You die, you’re dead.
Rule 4: No breaking the surface of the water outdoors
Rule 5: No piloting Seamoth, Prawn, or Cyclops
Rule 6: Animal Lover
Rule 6a: No putting fauna in a bioreactor
Rule 6b: No using damaging weapons on fauna
Rule 6c: Vegetarian - No eating fauna, filtered water, or nutrient bars
Rule 7: No Location Spoilers. Cannot visit a location with a signal, hint, or code without first unlocking that signal, hint or code
Rule 8: Must build a base with at least one of each component, module, and misc. item
Rule 9: Eggs
Rule 9a: Must hatch one of every type of egg
Rule 9b: Must hatch all 5 cuddlefish eggs
Rule 10: Must find and harvest a Purple Pinecone

i think the no breaking surface rule should be an exectption for the floating islands because you need to go on them to get all of the achivements and to complete the story

Yep, there's several PDA logs in there along with flora you can't find anywhere else.

I think you can get on the islands without "breaking the surface", so this should be fine for now.

I'm guessing that's where Gun Island comes in. If you enter through the moonpool then use the teleporter I could argue that you can access the islands without technically breaking the surface of the water.

usually a lot of try hards take challenges like these and they already know how to play most of the game or have attempted even harder challenges like this in the past. their outlook is that either its totally possible, just long, or that it isn't possible, but they drag you along for like, 6 7 hour streams or something. I think the breaking the surface rule should be allowed for areas like the two islands as well as the Aurora, as they contain scannable items and PDAs that can't be found anywhere else. Obviously you should only go there when you need to, not just for air, but I still think you should be allowed to set foot on them for story purposes.

I think there is mods that make it so you can't breathe the surface air meaning no refilling oxygen there

He’s allowed to break the surface indoors, so he can get to the island through the alien base, and he’s counting the aurora area as indoors so it should be possible

Either one or both islands (I forget which) have caves where you can surface, which isn't "outdoors" so it should be allowed.

I love it when the rules pop back up to remind the viewer of the details that may be forgotten. Whenever they pop up I always have the same thought "I wish that each rule had its own colored text so I can tell what rule it is at a glance" I hope that is helpful, keep up the great content!

some notes that might be helpful. the Air Bladder can restore 15 seconds of oxygen which is very useful for emergencies while only using one inventory slot as opposed to the 6 that having an extra o2 tank. For normal runs you could also eat (raw) bladderfish for 15 seconds of o2 however this breaks rule 6c (and although turning a fish into a tool doesn't seem like animal lover behavior it doesn't break 6a, 6b, or 6c). Another tip that definitely doesn't break any rules is that beacons keep their name when you pick them up meaning you can rename a beacon somewhere safe and then easily deploy it without having to risk spending time typing in a dangerous situation

15:54 yes! I always thought it was interesting that the one who survives the longest was the one who didn't want to exploit or overpower nature. Also, if I remember correctly the Grand Reef PDAs imply that tthey were attacked because Marguerit got the leviathans' attention. (And yeah, BZ does not count. I was so salty when they brought Marguarit back) I really like your narration, especially how you go over the story elements as you encounter them.

Something you could do for the islands would be building a base that you can enter from underwater and exit on the island itself. That way there's absolutely no air-related benefit derived from going up on land

I think a cool workaround to the no surfacing rule should be that when you go up to the islands, you submerge WITHOUT an oxygen tank, so that the stakes are much higher. Perhaps build a base right below them?

i would still always carry at least 2 blader fishes. Those give you 15 seconds more oxygen when eaten and can save you many times from drowning (speaking from experience)

Good tip, but I think our hero can't use it because of rule 6c - Animal Lover: Vegetarian, no eating fauna, filtered water, or nutrient bars. Still a good tip for those of us unburdened by regulations or moral imperatives.

i think people saying you should carry another o2 tank underestimate how much reliance the player has on mobile storage methods that you arent going to have access to lol. itd be a stretch since every area it can be found in is swarmed by reapers, but you should try to go for the still suit, so you don't have to eat so many creep vines to get water back, or other flora on the planet.
