I just say a huge thank you! I never could grasp the concept of Subnetting before. And was afraid I might not be able to continue with the Cybersecurity field if I couldn't figure it out. So, I just want say thank you so much for breaking it down like this. The rulers and the 5 basic steps (hand) really helped me connect some of the dots in my mind. Look forward to checking out more of your subnetting and other helpful networking tips and tricks.

Keith, I have clicked on a couple of your videos here and there while looking at how to do a task but have never finished the videos BUT now that I'm actually enrolled in school for a few IT certification and got stuck in IP subnetting.... did some research and ran across a recommendation from a post I read in "Reddit". As of today, you have just become my #1 instructor for the CCNA. I just finished watching the IPv4 Basic and I'm hooked. I'm so excited that you have the whole CCNA series...over 175+ videos. Thanks for putting out these videos and thanks a million for all that you do for the network community.

Great stuff....thank you. I wish I had found you 15 years ago. You're a good instructor. Your enthusiasm is contagous and it's clear that you've put a lot of time and effort into how to best deliver the info. The use of rulers really illustrates your point well, and quickly. I love the home-made, telescopic, color coded subnet mask teaching aid. Good on you for what you're doing to help people here on KZbin...for free. I teach networking to my friend. The main hurdle is that simple questions have very complicated answers. In other words, you have to dig deep to understand networking. It’s narrow focused and many ITs get bored quickly learning dry conceptual stuff. For example he was asking how to locate a DHCP server on the LAN. I had to go into layers, broadcast domains, encapsulation, subnetting. Just to explain that.

Watching your IPv6-03 Series videos from way back as a supplement to the CBTN CCNA 200-301 to understand the IPv6 section better as I was confused there. Since the comments are off on that video no where to comment. It was a long video, but really really enjoyed you breaking things down to all it’s very nuts and bolts in understanding. A lot I now understood. In the new CBTN CCNA Course at video 145 I think for IPv6 it introduces lots of concepts and I just could not understand as to me I didn’t get the nuts and bolts to understand all these types of addresses for IPv6. Anyway 3/9 videos in they are solid platinum and really helped. But after watching one very lingering question still remain in my mind: Local Link address vs Global Unicast address. In that I’m still a bit confused as to why a device may need or can have both addresses. If I’m not confused a Router can seemingly have a Global Address and several Local Link addresses on different Fast Ethernet ports. I’m trying to still get that fundamental question answered at to understand why? Assuming I’m not confused. What is the Link Local address doing that the Global Unicast address isn’t doing or vice versa? I do understand I think, that the device IPv6 Link Local address communicates to its local subnet multicast group. I think I’m missing something here. With IPv4 every think has just 1 IP Address and just send packet there. But in IPv6, it appears you can have both a Link Local as well Global Address and I’m trying to differentiate the two.
@KeithBarker4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question! I have made a note, and when I get to IPv6 here on KZbin, I will make sure to clarify that for you. Does that work for you?
@ardentdfender41164 жыл бұрын

How do i find the answer for this question please : You are designing a subnet mask for the 172.19.0.0 network. You want 26 subnets with up to 1700 hosts on each subnet. What subnet mask should you use?
@KeithBarker4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question Zain. From the Subnet Saturday Playlist, here is how we could solve that: Beginning with 172.19.0.0/16 How many more bits to support 26 subnets. (finger game) Answer, 5 additional subnet bits. New mask is now /21 (16 + 5) How many host bits are left, answer 11 (32 bits total, minus 11 used by the mask) How many hosts supported by 11 bits, (finger game, -2), answer 1024 - 2 = 1022 Final result, there aren't enough bits to go around to create 26 new subnets with 1700 hosts on each subnet. Hope that helps a bit, and enjoy that playlist! ogit.online/subnet
