You forgot a very important usage of the subscript and superscript: sequence enumeration, example: A^(4)_(n=1). Sequence A, with a superscript of 4, and subscript of n=1, means that sequence A start from the element 1 and goes to element 4, so a total of 4 elements in the sequence. This doesn't directly tell you what the actual elements are, just how many of them are there and their ordered locations in the sequence. Another usage is interval notation, the subscript tells you where the interval starts, and the superscript tells you where the interval ends. [F]^(4)_(1) says the function F from x=1 to x=4. Logarithms can also use subscripts, like log_2 (x) where 2 is the subscript, read: log base 2 of x So it's very important to know the context of the problem at hand, because math often reuses the same notation in multiple places for different proposes. People who first wrote those notations were't thinking of the newbies, it's like math gatekeeping lol

Okay, it turns out a subscript is simple, and related to ordinary language usage more than mathematics. Thank you.

I was taught that three lines on an equals sign means "always equal to" so I definitely wouldn't use it for anything to do with algebra or variables

I don't understand a word you're talking about...I am in 9th grade and I just wanna understand subscripts in mathematics because I saw this line in a book "a(variable) subscript n(variable) is not equal to zero" and some more crap so I just wanna understand it☹

"a(variable) subscript n(variable) is not equal to zero" this is written as a_n =/= 0 right? With no context I believe this probably means that "a" is some kind of sequence, and "a_n = 0" is saying no element "n" in the sequence "a" is equal to zero. So zero is not part of the sequence. He didn't mention the most common use of subscript in math, which is sequence enumeration.
