You were clearly pushed to start as quick as possible. Typical problem at those busy take-off sites. Take it easy, make sure everything is right for you. Just let them wait. Or maybe better look for sites to fly where there's more space to start. We have many of them here in Switzerland. Good luck and take care...

Thanks for posting! I launched from there a few weeks later, and it sure can get a little stressful up there, with a lot of pilots, plus the tourists watching, not a lot of space/time for corrections in the launch phase... But the flight itself was well worth the trouble - spectacular views for sure! Good thing you were OK, happy landings!

maybe if they used the back half of the launch area where all people are standing about the could get the wing inflated and stable before launching over the bushes

Why not go a forward launch in these conditions?
@matthiashauptmann9423
@matthiashauptmann9423 Жыл бұрын
The problem begins with having to sort your glider beside launch, then carrying it to the actual takeoff. Other pilots only help to get airborne asap, putting unnecessary pressure upon each other resulting in stressed launches that frequently go wrong in one or another way. Being on Hochfelln after the Tegelberg-experience really was a relief!
@ScoringStageEu
@ScoringStageEu 2 жыл бұрын
maybe it would have been better to forward launch ? Also after taking off I notice that the pilot seems to turn left. I'd get some hight first before doing any turns or seating in
@DomesticDave

reinforces the wisdom that takeoffs and landing are the most dangerous in any kind of flying, not the flying itself :)

I SO agree. I was highly recommendee by so many ppl, including instructors who knew my competency level, to take an SIV. When I took the SIV, I realized I was not confident enough to judge the weather and take off entirely alone. So all the fancy SIV manoevres didn’t help me much.

This is how the start under pressure ends :)
@cedricdubois9909
@cedricdubois9909 2 жыл бұрын
One of the possibilities is to always know your skills, you decide (ignore the pressure). Starting lower also allows you to get the wing above your head faster, then adopt the appropriate take off position and big strides. Off u fly! Perhaps cutting back that first line of bushes would help beginners and protect the equipment. Fly well and feel the elements.
@michaeldose2041

I would say go to a place that has consistent wind and learn ground handling. When you have confidence because you really know how to handle your wing the group pressure won't be such a problem.

Wow, now I don't feel so bad about not being able to launch a wing as a beginner. Apparently even someone with a little experience still has problems. I attended a weekend class on kiting a few weeks ago and, damn, that is pretty strenuous activity. I lack the physical endurance to do much of that kind of thing, which is why I opted for the trike setup.

@michroz
@michroz 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder why you guys _always_ try to start reverse facing the wing? With almost no wind the small hesitation needed for the turn often leads to trouble. Next time in these conditions why don't you just try to start facing downhill. Especially with so many supporters they will hold the wing for you for good inflation and you simply run forward and cannot miss! I am speaking as a seasoned paramotorist and I always start facing forward at low or no wind. Starting reversed is only needed when the wind is high and you really need to pull hard, watch and control the glider (probably run uphill) and then you usually do have time to turn without losing control over your glider.

Too crowded. If those people had been back at a respectful distance instead of crowding the launch site as closely as possible, then you would have been fine. You needed a few more steps to run up/launch but all these people were in the way. Don't be scared to tell people to back up and give some space, a lot of the time people just do it without realising.

I know these pilots aren't students because of their gliders so why are they acting like them.
@NGC1433
@NGC1433 8 жыл бұрын
I am shocked by that all the way around europe each year. Apparently groundhanling is considered not stylish or something. A lot of schools think that letting a pilot know where the toggles are and how to strap in is good enough to fly EN-C wings. This is an impression I got on slopes of Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. I live where winch launch is the only way to get off the ground and not having the skill to launch in any (flyable of course) wind means getting your face smeared across a concrete runway each time. In a couple of months tentative students here start in 90 degree cross winds of moderate strength. Those two launches in the beginning... Why did that first guy stop? Was he afraid of the height suddenly? The nice new wing saved him already by not overshooting. The second pilot... Where were his hands? Why no brakes applied? Confused by reverse start? Why the F try it on a slope for the first time? These are typical errors of untrained people, and their place is in a football field on a windy day, learning all they have to know instinctively and have immediate responses to.
@poison_your_mind
@poison_your_mind 2 жыл бұрын
@@NGC1433 That first pilot didn't have the wing above their head. You shouldn't run when the wing is to the side and you also shouldn't run if it's in front of you. That's how you get injured. You can run on flat even if the wing isn't positioned properly. But on a slope, running ahead in such a situation will usually result in a collapse.
