I may be wrong so please correct me if I am not very knowledgeable about German World War Two U-Boat design and unfortunately can't go see one in person with where I live. However, from what I can find online, shouldn't the U-Boat Ventilation Intake, Diesel Induction and Diesel Exhaust valves have a rising stem design? It would also be a clear indication from a distance of the position of the valve as fully inserted would be shut while fully extended is open.
