This collapse and the collapse of the condominium in Miami teaches me one thing.... Never underestimate cracks you see in a building. Those are just one of the warning signs of a potential collapse.

There are many more example of that. I've heard of at least two cases where emergency total evacuation of building where ordered for the mere mention of a diagonal crack in a wall. One of those buildings actually collapsed the next day before the inspectors had time to get there. I think that the second got preemptively torn down.

Cracks in concrete are normal though. Its about differentiating which are serious and which are not. But if everyone overreacted everytime they saw a crack in concrete then everything would be closed

As a Singaporean, I thank you for sharing this video and story. We Singaporeans have since taken a more pro-active and serious view of accidents and incidents caused by poor engineering designs and poor maintenance regimes. Following Hotel New World there were other incidents like the Nicholl Highway collapse in 2003 and subway disruptions, all due to bad engineering. The parties responsible were dealt with very severely.

There was also the bridge collapse at the junction between PIE, TPE, Upp Changi Rds E & N too in 2017; some engineers were jailed but 1 somehow had all charges against him dropped

As well researched as BrickImmortar videos may be, please tell me how, after watching a 10-minutes video on KZbin, you can reserve yourself the right to say "Good thing this person died". Especially when the accused, being dead, did not have the possibility to defend himself against the accusations made by the "witnesses". (who might just happen to have an interest in putting most of the blame on him, don’t you think?) Even if he did deserve his death, something you casually take for granted, I’m not sure you understand exactly how this pales in comparison to the many lives tragically taken by this accident. An excessive eagerness to designate culprits without proper research is the hallmark of the worst kind of populist vigilante justice. It’s a natural instinct, but not only is it not productive, it generally only serves to generate even more injustices.

@@gorilladisco9108 I think it was in 1970s, HDB tried to demolish a block with explosives unsuccessfully. The building withstood the blast and did not budge. Since then it is accepted to demolish a building only by the top-down dismantling method, floor by floor

It's so scary when companies cut corners. Sometimes the damage can be an annoyance (as it began with cracks in the walls and sagging floors) and sometimes the damage can be deadly. You do a great job of researching, and providing photos and news articles.

Jerina Tan the first girl rescued, Ms. Tan was very lucky to have not been killed in that tragedy. She appears overwhelmed to have finally met with her rescuer Ali Ismail. I am amazed by the events that bring total strangers together and share a single moment in their separate lives that neither will ever forget. I wish them both well, good health, and long and happy lives.

i visited Singapore around the end of 2013. it was actually not too bad in terms of heat and humidity. what a fantastically beautiful place Singapore was, and is. a little strict in certain aspects, but ironically, that makes it better in those respects. i imagine that after the event like in this video, the building codes where highly enforced and improved upon, since most of Singapore literally is skyscrapers. by the way, new years on that boat shaped hotel was epic haha. Rum n Cokes watching the fireworks from above was awesome.

It's the one with the closest system concept with European or American system and it's so small it's pretty hard to be corrupt. @@Werrf1 Cutting corners on the cost of the electrical system, was the premise of the very old fictional movie, "The Towering Inferno". The building supposedly was a modern and safe building. As they were testing things or turning on the lights for their Grand Opening, something shorted out in the basement electrical panel. Little did they know that at some other end of the circuit, about 80 floors up, it also shorted out, starting a small fire. The building had fire sprinklers, but for some strange reason, it wasn't deemed important enough to have them to be operational before the Grand Opening party way up on the 130th floor. Sounds like the premise for a disaster movie. Oh wait.

This is what worries me about the block I live in. It was built for offices and now it's homes. A home has heavier and more contents than an office. Then they added wood cladding to it. I have had this fear since moving in 6 months ago. I can't wait to move. It just doesn't feel safe to me

Building standards around the world vary widely. I have first-hand observation of Egyptian high rise construction. I have never been so scared to ride an elevator and be in a fifth floor apartment. There is an apartment block that went up in my area recently (within the last 3 years). It was built very quickly, and before being painted you could see many cracks between the the ground and second floor. There was one major crack that runs at least the entire length of the face and one side of the building. I don't know if it goes all the way around, since I could only see the two angles. It hasn't collapsed yet, but I have serious doubts about its survivability.

The tunnelers were originally thought to potentially be the cause of the collapse when they were trying to figure out what had happened. They thought that maybe the ongoing work had led them to burrow too close to the Hotel New World - but the tunnels were nowhere near so they were quickly ruled out as a potential cause.

It'd be another ~15 years before a tunnel would be dug near to that hotel - the North East Line around Farrer Pk station - & the Farrer Pk Hotel & Hospital built above it would also later split Owen Rd into 2 sections

There was no liveload to support the weight of the building. Engineers are required to have the right calculations to avoid this.

Chicago is the city where modern building codes were first developed. The first electric codes were developed here in 1893 for the Chicago's World Fair. Today, in the US you have the Uniform Building Code, and then the Chicago Building Code. I have lived in Chicago all my life, and I don't recall any similar building collapse here. That is a testament that our code and permitting process works here. I was a contractor in Chicago, and getting permits here are quite a pain. But, the results prove the soundness of the approach here in Chicago. BTW -- The first skyscraper was built here, and we have four 100+ skyscrapers here. Also, balloon frame construction was invented here, which is how most homes are built today.

As someone with basic education in architecture I have to stress how insane this is. Structures rarely give warning before collapse, they just eventually do. This one was essentialy screaming it and noone paid attention. Structures do develop cracks as they set, but that does not normalize them. They have to be evaluated. Crack that penetrates through whole thickness of wall is essentially saying "This specific wall has almost completely failed to distribute its current load." Furthermore building on an unstable soil using heavy materials is essentially impossible. Even four-bedroom houses may begin to unevenly sink at regular temperate conditions.

I was expecting morality toll to be much higher. I wasn't expecting such a high amount of survivors in that chaotic pile of concrete. Speed and patience are key when it comes to rescue attempts. Good on for all the rescuers for saving that much people. More often then not, you hear that people survived the initial moment the disastrous event took place but succumb to their injuries or other life threatening elements due to over exposure.

Quick point. Singapore dose not have traditional seasons such as summer, winter etc. Singapore has a wet and a dry season but temperatures are most often 76°F to 89°F the entire year. This is due to be located so near to the equator.

If this series has taught me anything, it's this: Never take a building for granted. Always ask for any history regarding certifications, inspections, etc. And be wary of corporate bull. Because odds are all it is can be lies and manipulation

My Lego constructions have stood for decades. Except for one in which a friend picked it up and it crumbled. Had he asked me, I would have told him not to, let me do it. I built it, and I knew where its load bearing lifting points are. Maybe someday I will rebuilt it. My Lego constructions are big enough to have Lego beams inside of them to support the broad expanse of the roof or flat surface on top. Except for the RVs, they have no floors, well except for an upstairs porch. I just didn't have enough Lego sets to supply that many bricks.

Seaside unfortunately had less warning signs. Typically condo association caring more about cosmetic issues then major structural columns. They knew in 2018 that collums were spalding and flaking from salt and chlorine from incorect pool deck waterproofing.
