I get how to do the problem, and how to solve, I still don't get why. WHY is it "adding the opposite?" If I'm taking away debt it's still in the phrase "take away" and even on the number line we already have (using money) negative one dollar. So when we subtract 4 dollars that we don't have, how in the world is it positive? The number is inherently negative. negative minus a negative makes sense to still be negative. Like I said, I can memorize this, and that's not the issue. I just don't understand it.
