At 4:47 when you were subtracting 6527-3428 and you were doing the step of 527-428=099. You could have used the counting up method which is great for doing mental math to avoid borrowing. So first you would look at 428 and bring it to the next ten which is 430. so you would have 2. then you would bring 430 to the next 100 which would be 500. so you would have 70. then you would subtract 527-500 which is 27. then you would add 2+70+27=99.

I have an easier method: for e.g.: 32-18: 1.: look at the second digits first: you notice it is bigger in the second number, so you gonna subtract one more from the first one. So instead of 3-1, there will be 3-2, which is 1. 2.: in the second digits, because it is bigger in the second number, you subtract backwards: 8-2, which is 6. But what you write is not six, but it's complement (or compliment, dunno, which you add it to make the number 10. In this case it is 4, because 6+4=10) So then your number is 14.

Hi ! What if it's three digits? Say 674 - 589. Thank you !
@Neofellus
@Neofellus 10 жыл бұрын
Parker Leigh I will show it on a 4-digit number, to make the whole concept understandable. 6742-5896 1. look at the second digits (7 and 8); you see that the second one is bigger, so we withdraw 6 instead of 5, the first number will be 074. 2. Subtract backwards: 8-7=1, write it's 10-complementer (9 in this case, 1+9 is 10), the second digit is 9 (counting the initial zero). 3. Before writing down 9, look at the next digits, see it is 4 and 9: the second is bigger, so the previous digit will be one less, 8 in this case. 4. Backwards subtraction: 9-4=5, 10-complementer: 5. 85 so far. 5. Before writing down 5, look at the next digits (2 and 6), again, the second is bigger, so it will be 84, backwards: 6-2=4, 10-comp.: 6, so the final answer is 846. It looks complicated, but only in written form, in the head it goes really fast, and no need for writing helper numbers, or memorize too much things in your head.

***** That's a brilliant method! I love it! Though I'd explain it in short like this: 6742-5896 1st digits: 6 - 5 = 1 (if next digits has smaller top then -1) = 0 2nd digits: 8 - 7 = 1 (difference of 10) = 9 (as above -1) = 8 3rd digits: 9 - 4 = 5 (difference of 10) = 5 (as above -1) = 4 4th digit: 6 - 2 = 4 (difference of 10) = 6 (no next digit, just leave it) answer: 0846

The issue here is that schools only teach the 'traditional method' of addition & subtraction where you work the sum out going from the left to the right (i.e. units tens hundreds in that order). But if you try to do simply sums this way in your head you will fail because you are having to store so many numbers that it gets to difficult for most people. What you were never taught was how to add and subtract numbers going from left to right (i.e. starting with the big numbers first and working down to the small numbers; hundreds tens unit). Just because you didn't learn it then doesn't mean you can't learn it now. Just google Mental Maths or Speed Maths or watch this channel to learn these techniques. Addition makes up 70% of all business maths so its a good skill to try and improve. Giving kids calculators at school causes their brain to turn into cabbages (proven fact). Lol

Try the method of looking at the difference between the numbers, when bottom one is bigger than top and convert to complement. Ex: 1-7, diff is 6 complement is 4, the answer. Then next column to left is 4-5 is 1, so complement is 9 but reduce by 1 following sutra all from 9 and last from 10.. Continue left columns until number subtracted lower than number above.

Hey Teach, I found an easier method for the last example...reversed calculation so u have 1 minus 7, u know u will borrow, but u ignore the other digits so u think, ok what + 7 = 11 and it's 4. Then u have 4 but now it's 13 so what plus 5 = 13 and it's 8, then u have 1 that is now 10 - 2 is 8 and so on, taking one just adding 10 and subtracting 1...easy,,, try it

I could learn how to do this, but I'd never remember it when the time came to use it. That's the problem with many (most) so-called shortcuts. They would be of great help if, for instance, you knew you were going to have a test in the next few minutes, but of little or no value in most situations. You would be confident of the answers obtained by using the traditional method, but not with these "short-cuts," That's the problem with most of them. You'd have to double-check them by addition, so their advantage would be greatly lessened. Oh, I might add that your methods for subtracting two-digit numbers are something else. They work and are easy to remember. I will use them from now on.

@werewindwolf
@werewindwolf 9 жыл бұрын
Still the same, essentially. You could borrow/add digits on both ends: 10−(16−7), then 10−(14−5), which is actually 10−((15−1)+(−6+1)), up to 0−(−1+1) or you could just add the differences, like this: 2000 − 3000 = −1000 300 − 400 = −100 50 − 60 = −10 6 − 7 = −1 (−1000) + (−100) + (−10) + (−1) = −1111 Both these methods are logically the same, manual burrowing/adding is just often overly complicated, with the exception of numbers that fluctuate a lot, like 51729328 − 27153760, where nearly every digit needs to be carried (which is often hard to tell beforehand if you have a lot of numbers in one calculation.) Other than that, just watch the sign and any size numbers are fairly easy to subtract.

there's a better way to subtract it by adding and carrying over the ten's to the bottom number. It allows you to add numbers insanely large and quickly. You can normally beat people using a calculator to subtract 12 digit numbers, by using the adding method. Can solve, faster than they type it out.

Other method: 14792 - 1045 You'll notice the last digit in the first number is less then the last digit in the second number. so count until you wrap around... 14792 -1045, 14791 - 1044, 14790 - 1043, (if you start here, your very lucky!) 14789 - 1042. Done! Now just do the regular method. And the answer is 13147! It's rare but... you might have to repeat this method, here is an example. 14042 - 1795 (variation of the first example.) 14042 - 1795, 14041 - 1794, 14040 - 1793, 14039 - 1792. But we only get our last digit. so we have to repeat. ( 7 ) 1403 - 179, 1402 - 178, 1401 - 177, 1400 - 176, 1399 - 175. And we got the answer: 12247! It actually works! check it!

The biggest problem is though, that pupils cannot do 35 - 27 = 08. The whole point is that an algorithm reduces sums into multiple single digit number bond sums.
@sharonjuniorchess
@sharonjuniorchess 4 жыл бұрын
With practice comes speed. The key is finding out how students do these sums. For beginners they would count with their fingers 27 to 30 = 3 so 3 + 5 = 8. But if they learn to use number bonds they see that 27 requires 3 to become 30 and 3 + 5 = 8. As they progress they learn the fact that 7 to 15 is 8 therefore 27 to 35 = 8.

Here's another method using 10 base. 53 - 28. Since you can't take 8 from 3 yo put a dot above 2 which counts as 1. Then find the diff between 10 base and 8=2. Add 2 to 3 =5. Then subtract 3 from 5 to get 2. You subtract 3 because the dot above 2 = 1.

Ebuje1 Look up Japanese abacus math method (addition and subtraction). It's easier and it works from left to right. You just have to get used to using complementary numbers instead of borrowing. With enough practice you can use it in your head. (I say with practice because, due to habit, I kept going for the borrowing method. Took a while to get used to a different method.)
