Large American families often needed more space than traditional stations wagons delivered. For them, International Harvester offered the Travelall. This 1966 2-wheel drive is packed with fascinating paperwork including its “birth certificate”.

Whoever owned it, loved it and took pride in it. It's ironic how in '59 I.H. marketed the Travelall as a successor to the station wagon. The marketing was 50 year ahead of it's time. SUVs pretty much replaced everything.

And yeah these were the first common mans rig that would and could pull 20000 lbs no problem and with any of the v8 engine it just might go a bit slower with the 304 cid , vrs the 392. And you could not break them no way no matter what you did to them , I can also remember these engine being use on big gen sets and irrigation pumps back in the 60s and 70s in Nebraska and them things would be fired up at 5am and run screaming wide open all day till 8pm 4000 rpm every dam day for years , and they always had marvels mystery oil put in them !! And when you did service them for bearings the cylinder walls would just like a mirror and perfect cross hatch still most of the time rings rarely ever got worn out. As a kid I can still hear them screaming off in the distances on the gen sets no mufflers just a pipe going 10 foot in the air what a sound up close. And the amount of 18 cent fuel they would burn too once a week grandpa would buy 300 gallons of gas in the tank . lol. Them are days gone by now. But that ran the whole farm and shops during working hours .

Per the Line Setting Ticket, this Travelall has a 304 V8, a 4.78:1 Power-Lock rear end, and a T-8 3-on-the-tree transmission with Overdrive 4th! I believe the under-dash knob to the right of the trailer brake controller is for that overdrive. This is definitely a rare one!!

My Paternal Grandfather had one of these. He passed away at the age of 54 in June 1967, just a few weeks before I was born in July 1967, so I never got to meet him. I remember my late Dad telling me that this was what he drove. My Grandfather was working for a farm supply company that also sold International Harvester tractors. This company sold fertilizer/farm supplies also so my Grandfather would make sales calls to the local farmers in the area. This was a great video to see today.

Trying to wrap my mind around how rare a set of IH-branded West Coast mirrors must be……😮 I have to admit that I sometimes get a bit melancholy watching these videos and think about how it feels as if we’re actually REGRESSING automotively! When our parents and grandparents went to purchase a new vehicle, it was like going to an all-you-can-eat buffet! So many choices, so many designs, so many options! When we go to order a new vehicle nowadays, it’s more like standing in line at the prison cafeteria and taking whatever “slop” they happen to throw on your tray! Or worse yet, shopping for a new computer instead of a new vehicle…….☹ AND STAY OFF MY LAWN…….😂

My parents had a 1966 Travelall similar to this one. I believe they bought it new. Some friends of theirs had an early '60s 5th gen GMC Carryall and my folks thought it was a great type of vehicle for a young family. It was medium blue with white. Two wheel drive. No idea what engine or transmission. For many years this vehicle hauled the family and loads of stuff on our annual trip from NJ to the Outer Banks along with routine around town duties. My father liked to surf fish and he traded in the '66 on a 1974 Travelall with four wheel drive so we could drive on the beach to fishing spots. Light blue with woodgrain. It had a 392 with 727 Torqueflite and Dana axles. Dual fuel tanks. My first time driving was in this vehicle on a wide beach where I couldn't hit anything. I inherited it when I moved to Florida in 1986. A dozen years of New Jersey rust had taken its toll and I no longer needed such a vehicle so I let it go. I wish I had either of these trucks today. Great video, Steve!

I have owned three of them over the years, first was a '64 1200D 2wd, 4spd with 266ci. It had a Borg Warner with granny first and would pull a house if you had traction. Second was a '70 1200D with a 392ci and Clark 3 speed automatic, the engine was blown so I bought a '71 that was in Truck trader, it had a 345ci and BW 4spd, engine and trans was swapped into the '70 and that's where the trans tunnel panel was nice, couple of screws and we are in business, engine and transmission mounts were also easy since bolt holes were already in the frame. ih sold them with many engine and driveline options along with interiors. The '64 and '71 had a hard rubber floor that was clear all the way to the front seat so a sheet of plywood laid flat, the '70 had a nice carpeted interior with cloth instead of vinyl on the seats. At the time you could pick a nice one up for less than 1500 dollars, Wish I still had one of mine.

My eighth grade teacher drove one of those and his son was also in my Boy Scout troop so the Travelall made a great Scout hauler for campouts. I remember the cool thing about international trucks is that you could get any parts at any time, from any dealer, any where in the United States, 24/7 with a phone call. Better than a craftsman wrench . lol.
@googleusergp
@googleusergp Жыл бұрын
True, although you can still warranty a Craftsman wrench today without any issue (although you'll likely get a foreign made one, not a US made one, at least for now). International/Navistar is iffy on parts. My former (now retired) coworker and her husband have a small trucking business in OH and she needed a DEF cap for a newer Navistar. On back order. I found her a Gates and Stant aftermarket equivalent and told her to get that from her local parts store.

Don't forget that Jeep had the Wagoneer in the 1960s as well which would have been a direct competitor to this and the Suburban. Yes, the 1961 to 1968 models were called the "C and D Series" and were considered the third generation (1st was 1953 to 1957, 2nd was 1958-1960, 3rd was 1961 to 1968, 4th was 1969 to 1975.). As others stated, I think you meant to say "266 V8". Also as noted by others (and you a few times, lol), Raymond Loewy designed the logo. I would guess that the IHC under dash unit was rebadged for them by someone, say Mark IV or the likes of them. Benny from Classic Ride Society on You Tube would be one to weigh in on that, since he used to service them and collects them, featuring ones he finds on his channel. I comment frequently on that channel as well. Yup, with the partial VIN, we win: H for Springfield, OH assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The first six digits of the VIN denote the order code/invoice model. IHC serial numbers were a bit odd for a while, as were many makes until things got "standardized" in the 1970s. By 1981, the 17-digit VIN format that we have today was the norm. The original selling would have been IHC Corporation, 268 Park Street, West Springfield, MA 01089. This eventually became Keeley International and then Western Massachusetts Truck Center. Today this is Allegiance Truck Center who is a large conglomerate that has bought up a number of IHC/Navistar dealers in various places along the Northeast. As a unique aside, my local municipality will eventually use a building that was at one time a Navistar dealer and I have been there numerous times over the years when it was a Navistar dealer. That line ticket is gold to an IHC buff/restorer as that is the "Pontiac Historical Services' or "Marti" report for IHC. The information on it is invaluable. The original paint code is a two-tone code 6452 Turquoise/9120 Alpine White as shown on the bottom of the line set. Mr. Ray is I'm sure long passed away but that address still stands and the house has a long driveway, so perhaps Mr. Ray had a tractor or large snow blower to clear his driveway during the big MA snowstorms of the past. December 23, 1966 was a Friday, so Mr. Ray probably took his new purchase to perhaps get a Christmas tree or take it to Sunday Christmas mass as a shiny new vehicle. That weekend was anywhere between about 16 degrees and 30 degrees in Wilbraham, MA, but it doesn't appear that it was a white Christmas that year. I'm going to say the AC was a dealer install, but based on the build sheet/line set, the mirrors came on it when it left Springfield, OH where it was assembled. Navistar still operates a plant in Springfield, OH, and partners with GM to build their Silverado HD line there. Fontaine Modifications also has an assembly/modification plant there and I've been to it, most recently in November 2022. It is the main site for IHC/GM modifications, although, others are done there as we had a Ford F-550 modified there as the final stage manufacturer was also in OH for this project. IHC did have its own refrigeration unit and did make appliances for a time, but that business was sold to Whirlpool around the 1950s.

When VW's owners bought out navistar, they cancelled the smaller engines and medium duty trucks, the only thing they have a hand in as far as design is the grill and hood, the rest is GM. Remember, GM had a medium duty line until 08-09, and almost sold it to navistar.

Lineset lists the transmission as the T-8 Overdrive, which was the 3 speed with an electric operated auxiliary overdrive. I think the knob under the dash to the right of the brake controller. Also lists an International built RA-6 Powr-Lok (limited slip) rear axle in 4.78 ratio. Someone definitely built it to tow, International was the recommended tow vehicle by Airstream through that era. Some uncommon parts there.

Steve, thanks for showing us these interesting vehicles in your junkyard crawl series. I often read about the "weird" 3-door Suburbans but I wonder how many of those writers have small children. The 3-doors have stronger/stiffer/lighter bodies than a 4-door. And, no child in the back of a 3-door can ever exit the vehicle into traffic. We had a '71 VW Microbus with "only" a right side sliding door for passengers. My childless friends thought it was a terrible oversight to not have sliders on both sides. I didn't. It seemed very sensible to me. Manufacturers like to have sliders, or passenger doors, on both sides to save money. That way they only have to produce one body for left and right-hand drive markets (e.g. Ford Transit Connect). In '67 I had considered buying a Chevy Suburban. One of the biggest pluses for me was the 3-door configuration. I'm sure many other parents felt the same way.

Hi Steve, great video on this International Travelall! This one looks to be in good shape with the documentation to go with it. That usually says that this vehicle was loved and taken care of. Never could figure out why someone would take the owner's manual out of their cars and not return them. It's not something to be put on a night stand to read before bed. I wish we got a look at the passenger side. I noticed the door dropped when you opened it, so it's gonna need some attention for sure. I bet that engine, if it isn't locked or frozen over, will run again. They are some of the toughest engines out there. I hope someone will rescue this one as I'm a fan of the Suburban and Travelall. I've owned a bushel full of Suburbans most K2500s. It's hard to find a Travelall that didn't look like it was in a bar fight and suffering from rigor mortis around here. The farmer's normally take good care of their vehicles it's the help that normally is to blame. So Steve do you have this in a model kit? I've never seen one. I have a few Scouts and some early pickups, but I can never lay my hands on a Travelall kit. Did anyone produce one? Have a blessed day everyone 🤙🏼 Namaste 🙏🏼

Seeing windshield washer fluid or radiator overflow tanks made of plastic even way back in the early 60s when I was born still surprises me. I get what you mean about the history and trucks but to be fair, way back when pretty much all vehicles were trucks. It's not anything being added but rather it was what wasn't there especially in the beginning. With no rows of seats they were left with flat, simple boards and/or plywood making up the vehicle behind the driver. The knowledge that you share and impart with us is truly fascinating and I consider it to be a very generous gift to learn from your experience and knowledge. I think it all needs to be documented for future generations to also learn from. Thanks for sharing because it's caring. All my best Steve.

International was very popular my area of Vermont. Dad worked for the US Forest Service and they had some Travelalls and pickups. 95% of the area school busses were Loadstar chassis and every farm seemed to use their product(s).

I remember my Dad had bought a used IH pick-up similar to the picture on the owners manual. In about 1974 or so. But it was a stepside. Dark green with white bumpers and grille. I was about 10 or 12 YO at the time. But the most distinguishing thing I remember was when you drove it, it sounded just like my school bus. Probobly similar motor and trans.

I remember the '72 Travelall that my Dad owned and we took camping and such. I remember being amazed that it had 2 fuel tanks that were directed by a valve in the front fender well. Unfortunately the carburetor developed a leak and it caught fire and was a total loss.

Really hate to see a Travelall in that condition in the junkyard, but what a wealth of information with all the original paperwork. You can obtain photocopies of the line set tickets for almost any IH, but it's rare to find one in the wild that hasn't disintegrated.

Great video, Steve. Brings back fond memories of my dad's '64 with 4WD, 6 cylinder and 3-on-the-tree. Another great feature of these is that all the fuses are behind the left side of the glove box door.

Only 1 fuse box too! One part of my current project, a carbureted V-8 swap into a 1994 Ford Ranger will be a complete rewiring of the truck using an aftermarket kit. The fuse block will definitely be located for easy access!

Steve, another excellent and informative video. Please do one on that red GMC? Cabover in the background. I'd love to see one on that and I'm sure others would too. Keep up the good work!! You or someone else should rescue that old Travelall. It would make a cool project for a new 4X4 frame and a 12V Cummins swap or Powerstroke (Since International/Navistar made the initial years of it) with appropriate transmission and running gear.

I've always had a soft spot for the Travelall since the yellow '66 that came to pick me up for kindergarten. There were only 2 kids in my area so they didn't send a big bus. Unfortunately rust was the downfall of all series of light duty IH trucks. I currently have a '66 pick-up that needs restoration

A shame to see such a well-equipped and well documented example in the junkyard. It does not appear all that rusty either? It deserves to live on I think! Steve, I can't help but I feel always when you show us some brochures from your collection with pen-marks in them! Some of them have to be quite rare nowadays, maybe a yellow post-it instead of ball-point pen to highlight the text you want to show? Is that a Karmann Ghia in the background? The prettiest Volkswagen of all times.
